A winter evening with a wood fire, cooking, shortwave radio and cats | cosy cabin

- First trip out in 2024. I spend the evening at a cosy cabin near Alton Towers. I set a HF radio up that was not behaving itself, I can only presume it was the feedline somehow, maybe the length of it?
I do get to try out a Shortwave active antenna I bought from eBay, cook some delicious food and 'entertain' two farm cats with a midi synth guitar.

Hi Carl. Greetings from Portland, Oregon. Been a bit since we've heard from you. I hope you and your family are doing well there. My family and I are well. Just had spring break here last week. Everyone is back in school. Be safe my friend. 73
You need cat control carl 🤣🤣🤣
Now that’s th’ life!
Carl, really enjoyed this one, a great video, I always enjoy your outdoor adventures playng radio and cooking. The scenery is also very nice and your cabin seems very cozy and inviting, a great first outing for 2024, and I am looking forward to more of your adventures. And your two house guests also seemed to be enjoyng the fire and atmosphere, thank you for sharing.
Loving Steve's additions! 🐈⬛😹
What a beautiful retreat! Absolutely love it, especially cats and guitar! :)
You need to stop playing radio and give the cats some love 👍🏻
Great location!
I did quite a few tests with a couple of MLA 30+ loops, I think the first one was faulty as the second one I bought performed much better. Found using a power bank lowered the internal noise compared to using other power sources and I replaced the steel loop with coax, partly because it was completely out of shape when I took it out of the packaging.
QC isn’t the best with these purchases but they are cheap and fun to experiment with. The YouLoop is another interesting one to try.
Steve the cat made me smile, our cat was just the same, at least he eventually settled on the chair near the log burner 😅

Fab and very entertaining video...Great content Carl...Looking forward to your next adventure....M1bsz
Lovely cats. I'm a short wave listener only so any content on receive antennas is good to see. Thanks for another great video.
Carl, two words of advice, buy a Toyota land cruiser, you forgot to pack the tumble dryer. Oh how i really miss the UK. 10/10 for effort though, well done.
Good to see the Tagine coming out firt(Priorities ;-) ) and the vehicle back on the road.. I've had one of those active antennas for years they are great and the nulling out of unwanted signals QRM etc is useful!
Very enjoyable video Carl. Loved the cats and cooking. 2w0iep 73
I’ve become a believer in raised verticals. I have similar setup and the best I could do with 12 radials on 40 was 1.5 With just one raised vertical at 4’ off the ground I got 1.1 and much more bandwidth and less of the coil was needed.
Thanks for the good video Carl as always like the station managers do they belong to the site 73 de G6JMX
always enjoy your expeditions thanks for sharing look forward to the next trip 👍👍
Love your wee studio
Very cool video 73s😊
Steve! Lol
Thanks for sharing. Ant near buildings no probs, my 40m vert it 1m from a metal shed, radials, throw them anywhere, wont make any difference, coax and cats should go. Uk to zl today was wide open, even uk qrp sigs coming through via long path. Better luck next time mate.
I have had a few HAMs put me down on this one. But if things are wet and acting up having an insulation resistance tester on hand can help a lot. The dinner looked awesome! I brown a blade half lamb shoulder in lots of butter then cook in the same ingredients and chickpeas and a really good handful of fresh coriander on top low for about 3 1/2 hours. With plenty of hot flatbread, it's pron!
a multimeter won't pick it up. A Mega Ohm meter (what Sparkys call a Mega) will show some leakage current. i,e some resistance breakdown at a 1000Volts+. it's fun to test your apprentices' resistance ;) But don't get that confused with a high current Ohm meter, that was a bad day! Smelt like bacon.
You need to put out some ham radio content Carl it's been that long now mate
Carl try using propper coax not chinese ArG58
Was the radio Cat controlled? :-)
I see your pre amp was on Carl on the bands where you were getting lots of noise. The cats looked like great company!
i see Mike Zero Golf Golf Yankee was impressed
Try the CMC just below the antenna
Watched it again and was wondering if the coil was getting wet and any sensible wattage effectively allowed the surface to breakdown and give you crazy SWRs?
What antenna are you using? Did you try a different length of coax?
Isn't that an SWR of 2.0 on 40M, no wonder the amp doesn't like it.
Nice video Carl, love the retreat, is it yours?
Thanks, no it’s hired out
steve the cat looks interested to be a ham
Carl, would you consider a Toyota? I have a Toyota 4x4 pickup and it is absolutely indestructible and if anything goes wrong, the parts are cheap and plentiful. I love Land Rovers as well, but as you know they are awful money pits. Great show, thanks. Btw, including cats seems to be worth a 50% increase in viewership on RUclips.

What I am intrigued with is the small cottage. Is this a part of a camping site where you rent the cottage for a few days or is it a site where you place a small cottage on and rent the plot from an individual or company? Last video I saw you were out there in what appears to be a full gale storm. My preference is sitting by the fire and rag chewing for hours at a time or just relaxing and listening to what little shortwave broadcasts are left on the air. Yes a crackling fire, and a fine drink are in fine order.

See kds, you too can operate a ham radio without the aid of a computer.
Im very new to shortwave and ham radio. It looks so much fun. More than Television. I would buy a ham radio more than a flat screen:)
Thank you Art Bell
Cats 😂 👍
Where do you find these nice huts you go to? Local knowledge or Airbnb?
Mostly driving about but Google search and Airbnb for out of the area
Tell me please abaute your's cobweb if it worth 300eur(with shipping) for my contry. I see your's some last clip abaute portable with that antenna and tell me abaute your's apinone. Thanks and 73 from S50SI
