- In 1921 a mob of whites in Tulsa, Okla., descended upon a black-owned business district, burning it and murdering as many as 300 people. Contributor Kelefa Sanneh, of The New Yorker magazine, looks at a particularly heinous example from the ugly history of racism, and how it continued to color discussions of race in Tulsa for decades after.

So if officer Shelby THINKS you’re going for a gun she has the right to shoot you. That’s scary.
These cops are such cowards it drives me crazy. The fact that she had the audacity to say “I’d rather be judged by 12 than carried by 6” makes me sick. If we start sending messages by convicting officers and multiplying their sentences for betraying the public trust then maybe they’d think twice about “getting judged by 12”.
She came across as having absolutely no remorse.
She didn’t call for back up?
johnfd0210 of course she had no remorse. She knew her actions would have no consequence, that she would be lauded by friends and coworkers and shielded by the law. She represents the worst trifecta of police - an unqualified officer who could not handle pressure situations given lethal force who knew nothing would happen to her.
I’m from Tulsa. I went to school in Tulsa. It wasn’t until I attended a historically black school named Booker T. Washington High school did I learn about it. It’s a shame and it should be a part of every curriculum starting in elementary school.
My wife and I are both from Tulsa and learned about it in local public schools in the 90’s. I went to Jenks, which is definitely not a historically black school.
Brandon D. Good for you. That doesn’t mean it’s apart of every curriculum
@@mellowyellow403 Having worked in the school system ,it not taught by design, Because Black History is to be erase from History,we need more Black Historians to print and show I'll History,if it wasn't for the the social media, people wouldn't known this.Smh🤔😷🌎🌍🌏🖤💚❤️ Be Safe Be Well
@@vanessaboyd3798 I totally agree. Remain safe as well.
Mellow Yellow, how Old were you when you went to school in Tulsa, OK?
Tulsa mayor needs to resign, not smart enough to be in office! Not one intelligent response from him
Lacks emotional intelligence
I am from Tulsa, this interview does not reflect his leadership and his love for our community. He is beloved and treasured, and immediately meets with members of our black community and native community when they want to meet with him. I was at the protest on behalf of the Crutcher family, GT Bynum handled and continues to handle these issues within our community with grace and understanding.
I lived in Tulsa for 8 years. I can tell you the good news, the owner of the black wall street gallery Dr Ricco Wright is running for mayor this year. I think he will win for sure.
@@TheSakebomb1 snowball's chance.
@@kritter6922 , you & the Tulsa Mayor sounds like you're in "denial" from the past.
Police officers shouldn’t have tasers, pepper spray, dogs, and immunity. Police officers should have accountability!
Same with criminals!
Rough collies Which ones? Those falsely accused? Is being choked for 8 minutes accountability?
How is disarming the police going to solve anything?!
@@roughcollies1811 Why is it mainly the USA that has these police problems? What are the reasons for this? The Swiss have a gun based society yet do not have these problems so guns are not the reason. Why are police more successful in other countries? Perhaps fear on both sides, unreasonable fear plays a part? Your attitude is it a dog whistle designed not to fix the problem but justify it?
The mayor saying, "I think we have to have faith in that justice system" when he really means "I think we have to have BLIND faith and hold to little accountability that justice system."
The mayor knows that his white social network will consider him a weakling and a coward and a traitor if he acknowledges that blacks have any rights.
Wow so sad case after case.I'm devastated. what happen on black wall street.buried stories of racism my people our soul cries.out until justice occurs
History repeating itself over and over again..............
SICK OF THIS!!!
Well, I first heard about this Hellish mess seven years ago. I was working on a Book of Black Poetry. Hearing this shut me down and changed the Book completely. I'm still sick over Greenwood and if it wasn't for the grace & mercy of God I wouldn't be able to bear the pain of knowing this new info. People can be so totally evil. These evil ppl work for Satan and they know not what they do. It's as simple as this: THINGS MUST CHANGE. IT'S HIGH TIME.
But Trump is having a rally in Tulsa. Not a good thing no matter how you feel. Is Tulsa as racist as it was.
WATCHMEN was ahead of the curve. Legendary show.
It's ALL about Accountability in everything.
#EqualAccountability
Random drug tests of cops would bring a better recruit to police forces. And detect some that are not 'clean' if tested after questionable actions.
Please God, someone somehow may we find peace
4:13...Your opinion is WRONG!
Defund the police. Reforming the police hasn't changed any outcomes. rip #TerenceCrutcher
BRAVERY ON THE WRONG SIDE OF THE LAW.
Just Think, We Next😏😔🙌
Oh yeah, I'm afraid of the police too.
"What have you done?" When she gets to the pearly gates, let’s hope this numbskull remembers her stupid adage- "I remembered 12 in a jury, or six pallbearers".
He went to his car, I thought he forgot his gun, so I killed him.
not cool 🍍 🍨 ✨ 🎈
The problem with the female officer has nothing to do with racism and everything to do with lowering standards for women to be police and fire.
Like how a MALE officer Derek Chauvin killed that innocent black man
100 yrs ago, and we can't seem to progress from this? That rear view mirror is a problem.
If people would stay off of drugs, learn self control, and obey what the law officers are asking at the time, there wouldn't be problems like this!
Check yourself.
Are you making justifications here? You think it all is about people using drugs? Alrighty then!
You’re part of the problem.
@@susansantana4454 the man that was unfortunately killed by police was high on drugs. Have you been tested for reading comprehension? Or adhd?
@@KaarenAllynFOMO youre just ignorant of reality. Maybe you should watch less fake news on tv.
dearth vader I’m very sad for you and your warped reality but someday you will get educated I hope- for your sake. Fool. And you continue to be a big part of the problem. Shame on you.
