I don’t think it is any big mystery, I think it is just pretty simple, I think every country should just stay put and stay out of the others business. Nobody is going to win a WW3 nuclear war will solve nothing but destroying the earth an turning it in to mad max.
I was a medical doctor in the US Navy assigned to Marine Corps infantry units. I was fully trained in the medical effects of nuclear, biological and chemical warfare. Your prayer should be "let me be at ground zero". You can't imagine how horrific surviving a nuclear strike would be.
Yep, if the time comes, I hope to be one of the first to go. I certainly don't want to live through the aftermath of full on nuclear or chemical warfare.
A group of us had this very discussion several years ago. After everyone declared what they'd do with myself as the last to say, I stated that I hope to be a casualty in the first seconds. Living in what was left would genuinely suck shortly afterwards.
@@andyindicator2947 When ever this topic comes up, it always reminds me of this comic/drawing I saw somewhere back in the 80's. It is of two guys in a boat on a lake fishing. Off in the distance you can see a large metropolitan skyline with a big mushroom cloud over it. One of the fisherman says" You know what this means? Size doesn't matter and screw the limit". Still makes me chuckle when I think about it.
I served 6 years, USN as an MT (Missile Technician, C3 Poseidon missile system) aboard boomers in the mid 80’s. We were responsible for every system (from flight control equipment, hydraulics, heating/cooling systems, every aspect from loading to close out) and I remember every time we drilled for launch how much weight everyone carried knowing what it meant if it were an actual launch. Knowing exactly what would come after, and knowing what the world would be like if we were to actually make it home. We all knew from extensive training exactly what these weapons would do, exactly how it performed when deployed from launch to detonation and the result, and I promise you it’s scarier than what you could possibly imagine. I also know that it’s a necessary weapon and I pray deterrence will still be enough to prevent an attack on US soil. You cannot put this genie back in the bottle. Contrary to movies and what most believe, there is no detonation button to blow it up in space. When it launches it will reach its targets with precision, and it will destroy everything in it path and would only take our sailors minutes to launch every one of them. Let’s pray we never have to. There’s no do overs.
The United States ICBM locations are common knowledge because they are used as a target for incoming missiles. The goal is to get an enemy to target the I icbm locations while still allowing many of our most valuable nuclear weapons free for the secondary attack or response attack. It's a diversion, It's essentially the world's most deadly and dangerous game of misdirection.
Those missile silos are all over in my corner of Colorado. They continue north into Nebraska, and South Dakota, and North Dakota. The crews that man them are housed close to their missile silos, and they must be very bored, because they have been witnessed doing some pretty wild and crazy shit in public. Let's just say I hope these guys aren't as high and drunk on duty as they are off duty. Otherwise we are all in deep kimchee.
These states are called "nuclear sponges". But this is an old cold war doctrine. Russia will not primarily target these regions. God bless innocent Russians and innocent Americans.
I caution against having remote functionality in the silos. I don't think security of China should be too lax, but it also shouldn't be too easy for Ai to launch nukes at China. There also needs to be consideration of skynet Ai using presidential deepfakes and clones. Proactive not reactive.

In the nuclear world the true enemy is war is man he is and will all ways be greedy if the world was run by women the world would be better off they are more smarter
Just a reminder. It took humans less time to advance our weapons from the refined sword to the nuke then it took to go from the broad sword to the refined sword.
Well, I don't know what would be considered refined in this context, but swords were still used as military weapons in 1800s commonly in most advanced countries of the time. There has certainly been some change in overral military capabilities since then.
I was airborne radar aboard the AWACS during the Iranian /Iraqi war and the cold war with Russia. Most don't know that Russia used their Bear bombers to supply Cuba. So every 2-4 weeks these bombers would fly along our eastern seaboard on their way to Cuba. I can say this much, there was many times for the potential for WWIII to start during this time. We do not want to go into another cold war with a nuclear powered country.
Nuclear war really brings an unthinkable amount of firepower for humanity to use against each other. If there is ever an extinction even again, it will be because of us.
I remember that movie. It came out my senior year in high school. It was very terrifying. We were at the height of the Cold War with the Soviet Union. Scary times back then.

Yes, there is. Compromise your enemy's nuclear command and control, then incite violence in their own country. While they are in chaos, destroy them in a massive nuclear first strike so completely that they cannot retaliate. This is how things will actually play out and how the US will fall.

@@alexzaharof101 вы очень сильно заблуждаетесь, если думаете, что в ядерной войне кто-то может выжить, поэтому вместо того чтобы желать самого страшного, что может быть на свете подумайте о мире
The point is to NOT keep your nuclear capabilities secret. The only way to prevent and deter a nuclear attack on your country is if the enemy knows full well they will never be able to nullify enough of your nuclear arsenal to where you'd not be able to completely destroy them in a retaliatory strike.
It's actually advantageous for a country's nuclear capability to be known as it is mostly a deterrent weapon. The more scared other countries are, the better!
I remember practicing drills when I was a kid in school in the event of a nuclear/other attack from a foreign adversary. Looking back, it was kind of a joke... like pretending you're not going to be affected by it as long as you either duck under your desk, or get marched down to the bomb shelter. It used to upset a lot of kids, that unknowing feeling, because it was a regular topic of conversation for everyone. And it should upset people... still today. There's no running and hiding from such attacks and surviving. If you're in a designated location by the enemy... just kiss and say "goodbye". I hate war with a passion, and I'm a proud veteran. The possibility of countries throwing tantrums and murdering one another aren't that unrealistic today. Not now.
You're missing the point. People think it doesn't, but duck and cover actually works and yes you SHOULD be prepared to duck even under a desk. What you're missing here is that of course it doesn't work at ground zero, obviously there's nothing you can do at ground zero. But what if you're 10 miles away? Then hiding behind a desk can save your life. Go look up stock photos of Hiroshima victims. There was a woman whose floral pattern dress was burned into her skin. The places where the cloth was thicker, protected her skin, and where it was thinner, she got burned, essentially leaving her with a tattoo of the pattern of her dress. If 1 mm vs 2 mm thick cloth can make the difference between being burned and not being burned, you better believe hiding under a desk can save you.... IF you're at the right distance.
I told my wife that the mask for COVID 19 is the same thing as diving under your desk in the event of a nuclear war. It just gives you something to do. No protection at all just to make the leaders look good. It has proven that I was right.
Many people that were far enough away from the epicenter, or protected enough from the blast to not get burned still died within months or a year to two from disease. If you’re going to be anywhere near a nuclear blast, just hope that it lands square over your head so you don’t have to witness or feel anything is all I can say.
I am 72, a former Marine w/2 tours in Viet Nam. I recall how stunned I was when Ronald Reagan made the statement in ('84-'85?) that we could fight and survive a "Limited Nuclear War". May be on paper, but board games are printed on paper, not realism.
I'm glad you made it home after 2 tours. A lot of Marines didn't, and we didn't make it easy for those of you who did. Anyway, I think that statement was in 1983. That was Reagan's Cold War crazy year ("We begin bombing in five minutes," "Evil empire," Pershing II's and cruise missiles in West Germany, Abel Archer, SDI, rhetoric around KAL-007 - I know I'm forgetting a few items...). That was my senior year in high school (83-84). Reagan had the world rattled into quite a state - we didn't do duck & cover drills, but all students had to go through a curriculum covering what an expected nuclear exchange would look like, how our town would be affected, how many evacuees from the cities would likely descend upon our small town (>100k), and how many sick , injured, and dying would likely show up at our 20-bed hospital (>50k), etc. Reagan became a lot less hawkish and crazy with our nukes from 1984 on. Part of that was a private screening he had in the White House of The Day After. He wrote about it in his diary (now public), saying he had no idea what nuclear war actually meant - words to that effect. The next year, for the first time, he personally spoke with the Soviet premier, Constantine Chernenko, by phone. Of course Chernenko died right away, but he was replaced by Gorbachev, and I think we all remember how he and Reagan became friends, and even partners in disarmament. I learned very recently exactly how drastically they cut the arsenals of both countries - nearly 90% by the time the treaties were in full force. We've been rebuilding our stockpiles slowly ever since, but as a lifelong Democrat, I can think of no one in our government who has done more to reduce our nuclear stockpiles and to make nuclear war less likely than Ronald Reagan - AFTER 1983. I REALLY did not like him as president, but I have to give him credit for this one, extremely important achievement of his.

That question at the beginning, "Could the United States win a global thermonuclear war?" overlooks the whole underlying truth, that being that NOBODY wins a global thermonuclear war.
It needn't be global. If our biggest 10 cities were nuked, the USA would be fatally destroyed. No electrical grid, no water or food distribution, etc. Actually, it would take less than that: two pulse bombs over the US would take down the grid and within a year 90% of the population would be dead. Russia would require more than two pulse bombs, being an enormous land mass. China probably would be cooked with just two.

Very interesting. In the late 70's I was stationed at a SAC base in northern Maine (Loring AFB). According to Wikipedia, Loring had the largest stockpile of nukes in the continental US. We had nine B-52's on 24 hour alert. They were loaded to the max with fuel and nukes. To reach the USSR, the bombers would essentially fly over the north pole. From the US it was the shortest route. For this reason, we were told that Loring was the 2nd highest priority for attack if a nuclear war broke out between the US and the USSR. Of course, Washington DC was priority one.

I live in Cheyenne, Wyoming next to FE Warren Air Force Base in the heart of ICBM country. Visitors can explore an exact replica of an ICBM in its silo. Strong feelings of bellicose patriotism, immediately gave way to fear and dread when I touched the replica warhead. Looking down into the silo is equally terrifying. It’s about 60 ft/18m tall. Roughly the length of a common tractor trailer (lori). I imagined the screaming raw power of the fuel burning as I looked into the maw of the bell housing after taking the stairs to see the engines, Not gonna lie, It made me feel a little dizzy. Next stop, an exact replica of a command center. There’s not really a big red button, the launch sequence involves the president and is fairly complicated. In the end it takes two soldiers to turn two keys simultaneously. We actually got to turn the replica keys. That actually made my stomach turn a little bit. It’s funny that people actually believe we know how many weapons our military has
You certainly can know for many weapons.
The point is to NOT keep your nuclear capabilities secret.
The only way to prevent and deter a nuclear attack on your country is if the enemy knows full well they will never be able to nullify enough of your nuclear arsenal to where you'd not be able to completely destroy them in a retaliatory strike.
Vice versa
It's actually advantageous for a country's nuclear capability to be known as it is mostly a deterrent weapon. The more scared other countries are, the better!
I'm sure they have tons of hidden weapons and technology that we don't know about
I remember practicing drills when I was a kid in school in the event of a nuclear/other attack from a foreign adversary.
If you’re going to be anywhere near a nuclear blast, just hope that it lands square over your head so you don’t have to witness or feel anything is all I can say.
students then: Having nuclear drills and praying for the best.
students now: having gun drills and acts as the worse thing ever...
You'd be safer in a refrigerator.
"There are no winners in a nuclear war. It is unfortunate that the pride of many politicians comes first, and not the lives of ordinary people"
I am 72, a former Marine w/2 tours in Viet Nam. I recall how stunned I was when Ronald Reagan made the statement in ('84-'85?) that we could fight and survive a "Limited Nuclear War". May be on paper, but board games are printed on paper, not realism.
Easy for Reagan to say. He probably would be rushed to safety in a bunker long before anything happened.

Someone already won a nuclear war. USA vs. Japan.

If anyone doesn’t know, the reason why American solo locations are disclosed is so the enemy as to decide if they want to nuke a solo or a city which saves lives
That may be part of it but the major reason is because the Nuclear treaties, that the US and Russia signed, back in the 80’s, required them to show each others silo locations and bombers to be more transparent with each other about what their capabilities were.
