Thanks Nigel. Yeah, seeing the otter was special- it'll probably be another few years before I see another just because they are so secretive!

I've lived in Richmond for 48 years and walked all these paths by the river countless times I've never seen Otters or even Kingfishers.

Hi Colin, this year is the first time I've seen an otter, probably won't see one again for years. I've definitely seen kingfishers on the Swale although I've not seen one for a while.

Lovely walk Carrie...great news about the Otter and Barn owl...apparently Otters are suppose to be doing well, although i have never seen one. my wife saw a Barn owl today, but i missed it as i was driving...probably best to leave Dodd fell for better weather as the trig is well off the beaten track..

Thanks, I will definitely do Dodd Fell in better weather. It's been pretty miserable lately!

I really enjoyed that one Carrie. How fantastic to see an Otter. I've seen them numerous times in the Wye and it is always a thrill. I get how you felt there. A fair bit of snow on top. We haven't had any down here. I do love how everything sounds when it snows. Good job you did venture off the hills what with the exercises going on - especially if it was live firing. Well, good going. All the best. Mark

Thanks Mark. Yes, otters and salmon have only returned to this end of the Swale in recent years- a sign that the river is healthier, although occasionally people still dump their toxic waste into it. There is hope for the future.

@@carriehikes Alright there Carrie - a pleasure. That's good - it's similar around the country although the Wye has been in the news lately because of high phosphate levels. Yep, we live in hope. Peace.

Hi Mark. I didn't know that about the Wye. It seems we are always in danger of slipping backwards when it comes to protecting wildlife.

@@carriehikes Yeah, it's truly in a bad way. Just quick - Herefordshire, Powys and Shropshire are the chicken baskets of the nation. There are over 40 million chickens at any one time. So the excess phosphate runs off the land into the tributaries and main river systems. It's starving the rivers and Wye of oxygen. In summer it's a green sad mess - truly in danger of ecological collapse and all because of our appetite for cheap meat. We've slipped backwards and need to drastically alter farming practices and consumer behavior. Well, good to hear of your river mind you. Peace - have a cool weekend.
