The hotshots do with overtime and everything but there pay definitely sucks for what they do they get about 20 dollars per hour and the people you see in construction zones holding the sign get paid closer to 30 there’s a big difference between the two in risk levels

I'm feeling this. Worked 1,020 hrs of OT last season and made 67k in 6 months. A lot of people think it's good money but it's not all. You can't miss a single roll because you will lose 4 to 8k. You're constantly away from family, countless days with no sleep, hiking 2 hours up a 40 plus degree slope and cutting line for 14+ hours. I love it but they gotta change pay and TSP (retirement)

@@vikingsfan1233if your between the ages of 18-25 and live in CA, you can join the California Conservation Corps and they can set you up for a career in wildland and even structure (I don’t know about career paths from other state conservation corps). But if you don’t live in CA or are older than 18-25, you can still apply off the street. You can apply to join a hand crew with the feds like the USFS, BLM, NPS and even local state agencies and municipal departments with fire crews (though it’s hard to get accepted into the latter). One thing I’d suggest is to progressively overload on hikes, adding more and more weight through time. And when training, start committing to a hybrid split with weight lifting, calisthenics, circuits, and going on runs. Cardio is a big thing. But yeah, the fire season’s coming up in a few months, man, so be prepared. Good luck!

The stats are grim. Our country needs qualified, wildland firefighters.
Our forest depends on these brave men & women. Too many times forest fires are started by sociopathic arsonists. It’s heartbreaking to see beautiful forest ruined by fire started by domestic terrorists.
Our Sacramento Mountains in New Mexico started burning yesterday with multiple small fires scrambling and stretching resources. Tell me sick fire bugs are not involved.
Edit- it was 2 people that started multiple fires in this fire. Rumor it is a wild land firefighter and spouse. Sick sociopaths.

The saddest part is that some people wold rather have the firefighters save their property and don’t think about the risks behind it. The Yarnel Fire, 2013, 19 hotshots died trying to protect a ranch. The worst part is that there was not a civilian in harm’s way.

The bare minimum fitness requirement is called the “arduous work capacity test,” AKA “the pack test.” You have to be able to walk 3 miles on flat ground while you carry 45 pounds on your back in 45 minutes or less. That is the minimum standard. Mind you, real life wildland firefighting is way harder than the pack test, but at least the pack test will get your foot in he door. Good luck!

Don't forget that wildland firefighters and firefighters are also dying due to human error like they're always being told to just go in and conditions should be okay and then would you look at that 19to20to40 to whatever many firefighters lose their lives cus they were basically cooked alive or suffocated due to the harsh environment that's why i feel firefighters deserve more respect and money than anyone else

Someone's got to do it not everyone can have a bullshit fake job where they sit in zoom meetings talking about nothing all day. Somebody has to actually work and I think with this next generation we will see a great reset where the people making money off the internet will have their wages plummet and it will be the plumbers, construction workers and jobs like this that make the real money because people are so soft and out of touch that most of the new generation can't even change their oil or hang a painting let alone fight fires in the forest or build the things society needs to function. The world can't live off podcasts and pointless apps.

Self chosen for varying reasons. Myself, it was simple. I couldn't sit back and watch or pretend that my state wasn't burning. So I left construction at 40 to start my new path of being a wildland firefighter. Each and every person I've met, on average, does what most cannot do or are unwilling to do. The weakest of any wildland firefighting crew works harder than 90% of anyone. My respect to all who have taken on this challenge. Look in those men's eyes. Tell me that is unskilled labor while sitting on your L shaped couch pretending that your blind opinion or understanding is even close to accurate. These people, are the unsung, underappreciated , under paid, misunderstood bad asses of our time. I'm honored to have had the opportunity to meet such amazing people.

Speak for yourself. As a Marine AND Soldier who fought in Iraq AND afghanistan, Pay was not important. I do not go to war for a fucken paycheck. You cannot place a dollar value on sacred military service in war time. With pay or without pay or even food, the fight against radical Islam that attacked us on September the 11th 2001 was a fight for the survival of American western civilization. As a fighting man in the US Army at the time, my life was not for sale. I was not concerned about the dollar amount. I was in this war against my enemy as a matter of principle.
