Cube world was almost one of the greatest games ever made. I played back in 2014 and when it finally launched it was a mix of being satisfied and heartbroken at the same time. RIP to one of the greats.

I have Cube World sice a lot of time in my steam libery und give it again a chance now. When you understand how to came through the early game, first reagen can be really fun. Unless there are some things i dont like.
At first i would say the plus gear help you more then the Artefacts. On one side the Game dont want that go get to strong, on another side, you have a very easy start with some plusa gear. It would be better when the lvl what you get from your Artefacts (+1 each artefact) would increase your base stats. Now your "level" is not really a level, its only how many Artefacts you have.
If you craft something you need a lot of Reources, with every level more and more, and there is no possibility to farm that rercources more effektiv, so crafting is not really helpfull for lategame, becouse you need a lot of recources AND also money to buy the gems. With a lot of luck you will find gems for Endgame gear, so you can craft a good Weapon, but at all its much more suimple to buy your gear in the shop. I would like when the gems are cheaper and maybe crafted Gear stronger. (its already a little stronger) also you find different recources, thats bad for warriors that can only craft from iron.Classes that craft wepons from iron or wood and armor from cotton, can craft more gear.
Next problem is Drops. You get very very much gear for the other classes, that feels not good when you play solo. Also when you sell GEar, the money you get is very very little. 7 Gold for legandary items is not eneugh i would say.
Also the obvious pro blems everybody know who played the beta. Very strong mages and boomerang enemys, depending on you class sometimes you cant kill a boss when it is a mage. Imn not sure but i think after an ingame week it spawns another Boss, unless its a Problem.

There is a lot that happened before he went into pretty much exile mode.
In the Alpha there was a lot of us who loved the game, but there was also those who complained for just the same reasons we loved it, showing hate for it.
Example having a randomized world, they complained that you never knew where anything was, or where to go, where high level enemies were compared to low level enemies, where towns were, if there were any, so on so forth.
Sadly it was their voices that triggered his perfectionist side, he got tunnel vision, and to remove all the hate, he went silent, went offline to work on the game, however, with the nagging in the back of his head with all the negatives, he overhauled the game, to fix the game for the complainers.
For a perfectionist a negative voice is heard a 100 times louder, than a thousand positive voices.
All it takes, is that doubt to set in, and only flaws will be seen.

While the audience shares some degree of the blame, I think it's gross you'd give them most the blame. The developer was the one making the game. He had the vision. It was his job to make the game. The audience almost never knows what the want. Good artists know when to ignore the audience and when to listen. The developer will always share most the blame for design decisions because they're really the one who has any control over them.

It's clear as day that the ENTIRE situation completely overwhelmed Wollay in every single possible ways...
The worst mistake he ever did imo, and weirdly enough, was releasing the alpha in the first place... The lad shot himself in the foot the moment he released that alpha. he also just NEVER was meant to gather as much attention as he did, the man is clearly NOT built for that and I know from experience that I too would've messed up as much as he did, if not WAY more than he did...
We introverts just aren't made for these types of situations, we just aren't. Which might be why I'm simply unable get mad at the dude... Because I know for a fact that I would've been as bad if not worse, so talking shit would be hypocritical as all get out on my part.
Though, the whole Region-based progression system CAN work, we've seen it with mods like Cubegression, which simply improves the new system in a way that makes it actually fun for a lot more people.

The idea is fundamentally flawed since it contradicts the idea of character progression, not to mention it doesn'tmake any sense outside a mechanical view.
Also, being introverted is not an excuse for bad game design, maybe for communication issues, which he had, but not for not listening to players and running away with the money.
Lmao, imagine sperging out just because of a DDOS attack.

Uh…. Idk about the introvert comment. Being introvert does NOT mean not being able to handle these types of situations. Wollay probably has other issues. @@asgoritolinasgoritolino7708 > The idea is fundamentally flawed since it contradicts the idea of character progression, not to mention it doesn'tmake any sense outside a mechanical view.
That’s not true. Roguelikes do just that, and yet still offer some form of progression most of the time. Having a game not shy away from taking items away from the player allows it to feature very overpowered items/combinations, and often times give those to player much earlier in the game than a traditional RPG would, and still be a lot of fun to play.
I think in the case of Cube World, the game should limit its region locks to items that are deemed overpowered, while still having items that aren’t. I think this way you would get the best of both worlds.

I loved playing the alpha for precisely the reasons you outlined. I thought that it was flawed, but overall a great experience that showed a lot of potential.
I loved how you could explore, find caves for finding ore deposits, kill bosses, acquire or craft gear, *upgrade* gear in a really fun and creative way etc..
I can't count how many times I ran towards a dungeon/boss that was marked on the map and got side-tracked over and over because I saw an interesting place to go along the way.
Of course it wasn't anywhere near perfect. One thing that I didn't like was how I had to choose between upgrading my class skills or acquiring movement skills like climbing, swimming, hanggliding etc., but that was a minor complaint that I figured would be an easy fix. Same with the issue of pets never catching up to the player's level and always ending up underleveled.
I only played the release for a bit over an hour, but I simply couldn't stand continuing to play. It just was a chore to fight anything at the beginning and the prospect that crossing a border to another region would completely set me back to that very point took away all my motivation to keep playing. If I had completed one region, I pretty much would have seen all that the game has to offer aside from a few minor things.
Yet, despite the fact that everything you need is crammed into one region, the game feels directionless now. The reason is simple: Cube World is no longer an open world game where I can choose my own direction. As such, the game itself must supply that direction, but Cube World's release simply didn't do that. I felt more lost in a single region of Cube World's release than the entire world I played in the alpha.

Fans started an open source project some years back called "Veloren". The progress made thus far is incredible, it is a genuinely good game already. And it'll only get better as more time passes. You can definetely easily lose yourself in it. The only thing that's probably on the tougher side is starting out, if you haven't watched / read a guide on how to get started.
Also the caves are mental, genuinely at times more impressive than the minecraft caves update. There are mutliple cave biomes, different height means different ores and enemies and the game is so visually so pleasing.

      @tormint5294 2 года назад +1

      @@BasegFarmer that's fair.
I def recommend giving it a try sometime again, may that be this version or a future one.
This version def is a lot more polished than it was previously. Though skill trees for most classes still don't have their revamps but combat overall feels and looks a lot better now. Towns aren't dead anymore, on the public server there are lots of players, sometimes you'll meet one by coincidence while traveling and spontaneously party up. There are various structures scattered across the lands, bosses and caves. And the seemingly infinite view distance using forbidden technology is beautiful and adds to the sense of adventure.
I had a similar impression as you with an earlier version but this current one genuinely really impressed me.
Starting out feels very different than cube world, because veloren seems to initially put more focus on crafting equipment and gear but once you're in the gameplay loop of grinding towards better gear and through bosses, dungeons or caves, I've noticed that they managed to capture a part of what made cube world so good. Very excited to see how it'll continue developing.

I'm sure somebody has said it already but just in case, Alpha Cube World scales the firther away you get from your initial spawn. This includes into just the outer regions of the starting zone although not by much, the game will get significantly easier if you backtrack towards your starting zone, while the game will ramp if you just walk in a straight line away from spawn for a few zones. The idea is you pick a direction and just explore that way for hours slowly getting more powerful and the world does around you as well until you feel like making a new character and starting again. If the game gets too hard, move back towards spawn a zone or two. If the game is too easy, skip a zone or two away from spawn and I'll pick up

You make some good points about the differences and how the final version isn't perfect, but it doesn't sound like you finished the first region in the final game. The region locking isn't nearly as bad as people complain about it's really an anti-power creep mechanic that can be largely mitigated. HOWEVER, when you have a freaking boat and you try to say over a freaking ocean IT WILL DISAPPEAR AS SOON AS YOU START!!!! You can't use boats to cross the one thing you need a boat for??!?!? It’s too bad the game ended up the way it did. I remember watching videos about it back in the day, and really wanted to play it. It’s weird the game took this direction because Wollay had a bunch of Twitter updates that showed off new bioms, procedurally generated quests, arenas you could fight in, and other cool stuff. When I heard that it was coming to Steam imagine my excitement that I’d be able to finally play this amazing game, and it would be so much better than when it was first revealed. Luckily I watched a bunch of reviews talking about how the game didn’t live up to the alpha, and the weird changes. I’d be willing to buy the game if these issues got fixed. I can definitely understand why so many people were disappointed by these changes. I definitely am, and that’s why I haven’t purchased it yet. That being said the people harassing him were definitely in the wrong. Luckily in the meantime there’s this open source game called Veloren that’s basically the alpha of Cube World but with a lot more stuff.

That's also prob the reason you had such difficulty starting out, because you didn't use any skills. Youre right tho, the scaling is fucked
And there are items that keep their stats in neighboring zones (+ gear) but they're pretty rare.

I know the beta gets alot of slack, i was in that opinion before, I think i've found a way to still enjoy this game, cuz all there theres ALOT it messes up, there is also alot it does right too or at least does differently. I like the whole idea of navigation: learning what certain landmarks may represent, each different themed region coming with it's own mapping challenges, like forest is easiest with clearer landmarks more hearts n such. while lava lands is harder with no bushes, hearts, and harder to distinguish landmarks, water replaced with lava, but easier to spot shrines. snowlands having hard to spot shrines and other locations, freezing cold water, but plenty of berries and hearts. The combat seemed to be more fleshed out, I was surprised and impressed by the warrior class's effectiveness once you learn how to use it better, i did great with guardian class and even enjoy, although im a scout-main. And sometimes there are unique challenges to overcome and work around, there certainly more to do in the beta as the world is full of quests and areas(albeit locked behind restrictive levels) But with some skill you can defeat foes at least 1-star higher then yours with the right strats. I thank wollay's intensions were to make every next region you go to feel like an objectively higher level area no matter the gear(although it fails at that with showing the star system) I've learned. and it has its issues, In my opinion my worst issues, are the bullshit boss movesets, sometimes i get one-shotted because an epic beam-mage has smash and fire missles; which are pretty much one-shot attacks they can through out at anytime, and beam mages are have pretty much unavoidable high dps attacks and are TOO present in this game. And sometimes the game through higher level enemies in the middles of lower level quest making things tedious, (Although I've found creative work arounds to dealing with those issues). And there's the common stuff, taking away travel items each region, resetting your gear, The gear progress can be JANK AF The game to me kinda feels more like a "randomizer" game, each region is like a new session. When i see it in that lense, i can enjoy it more. I'm less focused on "progression" and more focused on just the "journey of adventuring", and combat in general. I pretend that each new region is just a new place higher level area, But the game also boats alot of conveniences, like instant(although somewhat limited) warp travel, sped up crafting, dropping that messy "power system", fixing some small jank the alpha had.
The overworld in the beta feels more mundane, But i think that was intentional because it allows the more significant quest areas to be more visible and stand out while mapping. I think both versions have their pros and cons, and are enjoyable in their own ways, you could say beta is just a different game.
In some of my experience, I've i remember taking down a totally bullshit boss with a good strat that involved my scout luring them outside of their tower, using his quicksand trap to keep the boss far enough away to avoid them insta-killing me with Smash, while my pet takes the aggro, and avoiding their beams by hiding behind places objects, like a hill or pillar, then kicking them to K.O and get free hits.
Then this time where all the villages in the lavalands seemed to be petrified(meaning no shopping or fast travel) so I went to a recent forest region to farm some wood and hearts, ands other materials to craft my starter gear.
Then encountering an 4-star enemy who was guarding the 2-star objective of a "destroy slime pods" quest, So i would K.O the 4-star while my pet aggros them, and would focus solely on damaging the pod to complete the quest.
Those some moments where i felt very unstoppable for overcoming such unique and (ill be honest) frustrating RNG-based challenges.
Don't get me wrong, I'm not dissing the alpha or anything. Because the alpha gave the player freedom to take on any enemy they wanted without a strict star-level system, with permanent weapons they get to keep and modify with voxel upgrades n such. Permanent travel items, and actually meaningful stat upgrades. And the mystery in the world map. But it also kind hits a stagnant point, once i got my ranger to level 80 i felt nothing to really strive towards escape maybe trying out every region theme in the game.
If you'd ask me, I would like for them to bring back to elemental cubes upgrades. fire for damage ,water for hp absorb, ice for slowing, wind for haste up. I saw the leveling system making a return, so you can take on higher level enemies without their resistance stat making them temporarily invisible from lower level attacks. I get region-locked key-items, but NO MORE region-locked travelling items. For the map, im done for anything honestly, alpha had good mystery and natural generations, while Beta adds a level of navigational skills with its landmarks despite the unfortunate design of the intermediate overworld.
Those are just my thoughts, overall cube world has been such an impactful game to me, has got me through hard times in the alpha, and today its still getting through a particularly rough patch of my life in the beta, and giving me that adventure fox i need in my life. The beta is not a perfect game, but still good enough, and is just different then the alpha.

Interesting story, I didn't know the game well. Regardless, for my part I'd come to a slightly different conclusion. Listen to players' feedback _if_ you already showed them the game, and preferably if the game is pretty much finished. Otherwise they might be disappointed. Since I didn't play it, I can't tell if it would have been better received if it came out directly in this state, but that's a definite possibility. Making people play your game is important at the final development stage for testing purposes, but many succesful devs have argued that listening to feedbacks from random players is a terrible idea. I understand that sometimes there's no way around it though, such as early access games. But we should keep in mind that most players think they know what's good for them, and yet apparently they don't. x)

    • @hybridplays1088
      @hybridplays1088  3 года назад +3

You raise a good point: not everyone's feedback will be constructive or worth making adjustments for. Wollay's case is indeed different from a normal game because he released it as an alpha, so everyone was subjected to the standards left by that version. Given that he intended on changing so much in the final release, I feel like if he had ran an earlier beta test, he could've made adjustments accordingly. The beta test that he DID run was like a week before release, not enough time to make major design changes.

You're *completely* missing what actually happened. He'd been posting stuff in the community, and getting feedback, and talking to people. And people convinced him to release an Alpha, but he put it behind a preorder of the game for 10$. A bunch of people understood it was 10$ now for the game when it comes out, but for now it was just an early-access Alpha. But a bunch of people did *NOT* understand that, and immediately started harassing him and bullying him for "putting out" and unfinished game, forcing credit card transaction reversals claiming it was a scam, and generally, well, being The Internet. That's why he locked down and became a recluse after that first Alpha came out. And, fortunately, he seems to have gone back to working on the game as it was in the Alpha, which he's calling the Omega version.

Everything stems from a lack of communication with the playerbase and that has yet to change. Its tragic because as an alpha player from the month it was released I was always so excited to see where it would go, but it ended up becoming a lesson in game design. It really is tragic.
