    good video. I also use the Speedtest . I do have to keep checking my speeds as with FIOS by Frontier (previously Verizon) they seem to want to throttle you down to 25-50% less than what you are paying for (100/100 down/up in my case) and have to call them on it and them have them fix the issue every few weeks/months which is disconcerning. Dont trust them. if they can get away with it they will.

      You do have to keep an eye on it. I test quite regularly just to make sure and most of the time it's good for me using Spectrum (Time Warner). Thank you for watching, commenting and the valuable feedback. I appreciate it greatly. All the best. 👍😀

    Good information again. Still waiting hopefully for you to do a video on Port forwarding. And maybe how to make a home server from an old PC. Thanks.

      yeah I agree Id love to see the reconfiguring an old PC to use as a media/music server. only issue is what version of Windows can it be as a minimum?

    Thank you for the video. Question....What do you think the speed should be if you are using a wifi device and that is the only device on the network. If you are paying for 100 what do you thing the speeds should be?

    • @richardlloydusa
      @richardlloydusa  4 года назад

      WIFI is inconsistent and is dependent on many variables so the question is really hard to answer. I will be making a WIFI optimization video in the future. Stay tuned. Thank you for watching and commenting. I appreciate it greatly. All the best.👍😀

      @@richardlloydusa Another question...I linked two routers (hard wired) in my house to give me better coverage according to your video and it works great....does the second router (the farthest one from the first router, does it matter if that one gets updates or not and will that effect its speeds? Thank you for your time.

      Lloyd is correct! So many variables! But 100Mbps is easy to achieve consistently over WiFi if you use these rules. Always use a dual band modem! National average speeds on 2.4Ghz are 10-30 Mbps. Stay connected to 5Ghz band!! Give your 5Ghz band it's own name like MYROUTER-5G !! Always run the test from same location pref. right next to router! Finally use your newest dual band cell phone to run the tests! people seem to get new phones often!!

    Wish Century Line gave us what we're paying for. Paying for 12Mbs and lucky to see 8 or 9Mbs. You know the problem is not local because when the test starts up the speed shoots right up to 10 or 12Mbs. Then you can watch it get clamped down rolling off in speed.

      Are you testing over WiFi? I have century Link and hardwired, I get 2 or 3 over what I pay for. But when I test over WiFi, I'm lucky to get half of what I'm paying for!

    I use SpeedTest by Ookla and get via Wi-Fi still 390Mb/s down and almost 12Mb down, ping 10ms for download at 400/12Mb connection. I think it's good enough.
    I will get in January 1Gb download connection with 50Mb upload, I'm curious how good it will be.

    I use Spectrum In Florida also and get the same results with the extra bandwidth also I would be real careful posting your WAN IP number, no matter since if you reboot you might still be in the same "C block" which means that a attacker can scan all 255 addresses to find you One last thing you should change you name to something like " Richard Loyd, computer and internet for the beginners " so more people ( like elderly) can find you on this topic You might also want to check out the program PingPlotter to measure ping and latency on your connection

    Hi Richard !! Seasons Greetings to you.
    I am using Tp-Link WiFi router Archer C1200 V2, unfortunately it has firmware version support SMB1 protocol (server message block), which has been disabled by Microsoft by default. And now Windows systems require SMB2 or higher protocols, so it is not possible to share Windows system files with home cloud storage without compromising Windows security (also for Chromebooks). I have already waited too long for a firmware upgrade but still they are not out yet!
    I need to start using home cloud storage once again without compromising Windows security. So buying a new router is not an option for me!
    So please suggest me some other router firmware that supports SMB2 protocol or higher !!. (I know the fact that it can harm my current router and its features, and I'm willing to compromise with it!)

    • @richardlloydusa
      @richardlloydusa  4 года назад +2

      You can actually enable SMB1 on Win 10 and resolve your issue. Here is a link on how to do that. www.tachytelic.net/2019/09/windows-10-enable-smb1/

      @@richardlloydusa thank you so much! :), but here I have to compromise with windows security and I am also using Chromebook, it also requires SMB2 or higher file transfer protocol.

      I suggest you upgrade to a TP-Link AC1900 Archer C9 V1 I have two of them. I tested the primary one with the stock TP-Link firmware and and it uses SMB1 only but on the second one, which I bought used on eBay for $26.00 I loaded the DD-WRT third party firmware and that gave me the ability to use SBM2 and it worked in Windows 10 with the SMB1 support turned off. Here is the link of the buyer I bought mine from (you will need a power supply but the one you have for your Archer should work) ebay.to/36fUvnV I also saw open box C9's on eBay for $58.00 ebay.to/2SIkMY4 (which is a great deal as well) for a complete working C9. I LOVE my Archer and may put it back into service as the network NAS as my Linsys EA8300 also suffers from not having SMB2 support and no DD-WRT firmware. Thanks for the question. I may make a video on my solution too. All the best.

    How come when I use xfinity's/comcast speedtest page my speeds are higher?

    • @richardlloydusa
      @richardlloydusa  4 года назад +1

      Different test sites will give you different results. What really matters is consistency when testing so that you can measure the difference adding a router for instance makes. I liken it to a scale that is off 3 Lbs as long as it's always off by 3 Lbs you will always know if your are gaining or losing and how much. Thank you for watching and commenting. I appreciate it greatly. All the best.👍😀

    • @cartersgamplay5055

      It's true different sites may give you different results. Xfinity speed test server may be closer to you. For example if you already are an xfinity customer you may not even leave xfinity network!! I'm addition other speed test servers may take 5 or more HOPS to find an alternate speed server. Your only as fast as your slowest link or piece of equipment. This is exactly the point of Lloyds video

      but if you only get 100/100 max then the extra cost for cat8 would be worthless unless you are tyring to future proof your cable expenses and be prepared when you have a faster connection
