I completely understand that initial comparison to Amy Lee. Many of us in the US and Canada have only been really aware of Any Lee. So it is kinda hard not to compare when it is the closest thing to Nightwish that you've experienced

Welcome to the world of symphonic metal! And thank you for checking this legendary band, performing in 2013 at Wacken Open Air festival, in front of a 82k+ audience.
About the instrumental and vocal added parts - it's good to know they recorded their orchestral and vocal back tracks with prestigious institutions as London Philharmonic Orchestra, London's The Metro Voices choir group and London's Young Musicians Children's Choir as their regular partners.
As I could see, you really appreciated the show, the intricate classical-structured "cinematic score" composition, the high level of musicianship of all band members, the stellar vocals and charisma of Floor Jansen, our Dutch metal queen. The fact you are familiar with metal genre is a plus. You're cute :)
Since this is your first Nightwish reaction (and your 2nd experience with this band as you said), it is my duty to give you the short history of the band concentrated by Ann Waychoff, one of the biggest Nightwish fan who has since passed away (and I am doing this in her memory):
" Nightwish was started in 1996.They are considered a Symphonic Metal band, with a female main singer. They are from Finland. Tuomas Holopainen, the keyboard player, composes and writes the lyrics for 95% of their music. Marco Hietala is the Bassist and vocals .And there is the guitarist Emppu Vuorinen . Then there is Troy Donockley from UK who is a multi-instrumentalist and vocals. Jukka Nevalainen is the drummer. In 2015 due to Jukka's health issues Kai Hahto became the drummer and as of now is a permanent addition.
Nightwish has had three singers. 1st one was Tarja Turunen (Operatic vocals). She was with them until 2005. The 2nd one was Anette Olzon from Sweden (Poppy, strong vocals). She was with them until 2012.The 3rd and current singer is Floor Jansen, from Netherlands (power, operatic, soprano.....most versatile) - you just heard her.
There are live concerts that you should use depending on what era. From Wishes to Eternity and End of an Era (Tarja), Montreux Festival live 2012 and Exit Festival (Anette), Live at Wacken 2013, Live at Wembley, Live at Tampere, Vehicle of Spirit, Decades live (Floor). I hope this helps.

I have seen more straight women have girl-crushes on Floor than any other woman.
She is the Swiss army knife of singing. She nails every style , technique , emotion and stage presence is amazing.
Such a fitting comparison! My ex used to bring up Tarja every time he saw me listening to anything sung by Floor, but I just feel like they can‘t really be compared. Tarja may do the operatic parts ‚better‘ (subjective), but Floor is the biggest all around incredibly talented singer I have ever come across. Her playing with and switching between styles and her energy is what makes her so fun to watch and makes her my favourite.

What I don't see often in a singer is that both the belting AND the Head voice are turbocharged and yet pitch perfect.

Amy Lee is an absolute angel of a singer, but Floor is a goddess. Amy is more traditional where Floor is..well...everything.
The end always gives me goose bumps, no matter how many times I’ve heard it.
They've been around since the mid 1990s. Floor Jansen is the current lead vocalist of the group. She's from the Netherlands. The Guitarist (Emppu), Keyboardist (Tuomas), Bassist (Marco), current Drummer (Kai) are all from Finland, as was the original vocalist (Tarja Turunen). The other band member, Troy, who plays multiple instruments, is from England. The vocalist who performed with the band, in between Tarja and Floor, is Anette Olzen (from Sweden). You can't go wrong with the 2013 Wacken Concert, in Germany. Lots of good pieces such as Storytime, Ever Dream, Romanticide, Nemo, and Song of Myself. Some other good performances are "The Poet and the Pendulum" from Wembley, "The Greatest Show on Earth" from Tampere, and "Yours is an Empty Hope" from the Nightwish Cruise in 2015. These performances are all with Floor. If you want to see Tarja singing, check out some excellent videos on youtube from the Nightwish "End of an Era" performances.
But, I would suggest sticking around at this Wacken show for a while.. I think you would really like a song called "Storytime" live here at Wacken 2013..

Wacken is a small village in northern Germany, known for one of the biggest Metal Festivals in the world. More than 82.000 metalheads were at this show.

this was the first time Floor ever played in front of an audience this large, and if that wasn't impressive enough, this song is often near the end of a two hour set.
At the NYC show, this year, this song is 18th on a 20 song setlist.
Wishing the Viking Queen a speedy recovery ... this performance is by far one of the top live performances ever ... the band rocks, and she delivers powerfully and gorgeously with a voice that can take troops to battle!

82,000 people here. from finland, huge in Europe. Floor growls one minute, sings opera the next!
Your reaction at 3:28 is what we Floor fans call a "Floorgasm" 😉 Some viewers (either/or) listeners experience it at some point through her performance...Some mildly, some intensely, but we all went through it sooner or later.. 🙂 The more familiar you get to her voice, the closer you'll get to understand this phenomenon.. 😎
At this point Floor is just getting warmed up, just wait. She just keeps getting better and better. My favorite comment on Floor is that most people sing what they can. Floor sings anything she wants to. You will see & hear what I mean. She is the vocal queen. Outstanding!!!!!!!!! Take care.

You have no idea how deep is this rabbit hole, my friend... lots of songs (more than 100) even more badass than this one (let's say it's the entry level to show half of Floor Jansen's vocal abilities). They formed in 1996, changed two lead singers (with some issues, unfortunately...) but came back stronger with Floor.
They have a huge fan base all over the world EXCEPT in the U.S., due to the local music industry i suppose...🤷

Yes, Floor Jansen (Netherlands) is the 6 foot 1, Dutch Goddess of all things vocal and she is trained in and teaches opera as well as is a vocal coach.
She currently has 2 "vocal master classes" videos on her channel with more to come, if you're interested. If you love her now, you're going to love her even more after you watch her "1 Minute Fan Friday" video. She's such an absolutely lovable human being. 😊
Nightwish was founded in Finland in 1996 by the keyboard player, Tuomas Holopainen, who also writes all the music and lyrics with small contributions by the bass player/singer, Marko Hietala in some songs.
Floor is the 3rd lead singer in the band as their original vocalist, Tarja Turunen, was fired in 2005. She was replaced in 2007 by Anette Olzon who left the band mid tour on September 29, 2012.
Floor (ex-After Forever, Revamp) did the favor for Tuomas by filling in as a temp on vocals and had only 48 hours to learn the set before her debut in Seattle, Washington on October 1st.
At this concert on August 3rd 2013 at the Wacken Open Air Festival in Germany, she was still a fill-in singer.

Jukka Navelainen- Drums
Jukka was forced to take time off in 2014 because of health problems due to insomnia. Close friend, Kai Hahto took over on drums and was made the permanent drummer in 2015 when Jukka announced that he would not be returning to Nightwish, but will be helping the band behind the scenes.
Troy Donockley (UK)- multi instrumentalist

I've found that Nightwish is best served "live", which kind of goes against the grain in today's music industry. As Gabriel has told you, they have been around for 20ish years and have an extensive RUclips catalog of music. If you jump down this "rabbit hole" the Nightwish Army will be right with you. ;-)

Dear Schnell, her name is Floor Jansen. She stands without heels at 2 inches taller than me at 6 foot but I make up for it with my very tall heels. She has a big vocal range and people refer to the joy of hearing her sing as having a FLOORGASM. 😃💓 PLEASE react to Floor Jansen Henk Poort Phantom Of The Opera Beste Zangers. It is a Dutch talent show where they sang the metal version. Henk was the Dutch Phantom for years so it was 2nd nature to him. 🎶👱♀️👗👠👠💓 For all meals I am ALWAYS Hostess and cook and waitress for family and friends and I LOVE every minute. For Thanksgiving I was cooking for 6 hours which is average for that day.😃🦃

Nightwish is basically a Finnish band. Tuomas (at the keyboard) is the main composer and band leader and is often referred to as the Mozart of Metal which gives you an idea of his composing skills. He and Emppu (guitar) are founding members. Marco - the viking playing bass - later joined and also took over the male vocal role from Tuomas. In this performance Jukka is playing the drums, but was later replaced by Kai due to health issues, but still plays a role with the organisation of the band. Dutch born Floor Jansen - referred to as the Valkyrie Queen Goddess of metal - has been the female vocalist since 2012. The band is completed by Troy who is British and a muli-instrumentalist (guitar, woodwind, bag-pipes and whatever he can lay his hands on as well as being a vocalist).
The orchestral track is recorded by the London Philharmonic Orchestra and the choral parts mostly by the Metro Voices.
BTW the fiery bull is the emblem of the Wacken Festival.

I just came across your channel today and really enjoyed your reaction to the Nightwish song, Ghost Love Score with Floor Jansen on lead vocals. This video was my first exposure to Nightwish and I have been hooked ever since. The band is from Finland and Floor is from Denmark. This live performance was at the Wacken Open Air metal festival in Wacken, Germany. Apparently this yearly festival is the largest metal/rock festival in the world. It is on my bucket list to go there one day. On the night of this performace, Nightwish was the headliner performing in front of 80,000 fans.
Nightwish's lead vocalinst, Floor Jansen, is a vocal goddess and can literally sing anything from the highest "clean" soprano vocals down to the lowest "dirty" growling. At the time of this concert Floor had only been with the band for about 3 months. If I didn't know better I could have sworn that she had been singing with Nightwish much longer than that. Floor is actually Nightwish's third lead vocalist after Tarja Turunen (first) and Anette Olzon (second).

Just FYI, that’s about 70 minutes into the show, and Floor had been killin’ it the whole way already. Also, that’s 82 THOUSAND people hanging on her every word; so, no pressure on her to Bury that (9 second long)high note.... At 6’1 and 170 pounds Floor is a smiling, singing, dancing, enchanting, stage commanding Valkyrie Goddess, and to me at least, a gift from above. Seeing the whole video of this concert, Especially the Floorgasm changed my life. It made me start listening to music again. I love watching these reaction videos and my biggest hope is that people follow and enjoy the Symphonic Metal path I was led to. Welcome to it.

Welcome to symphonic metal, and in particular, the works of Tuomas Holopainen the Metal Mozart, seen here on keyboards, who is the composer and lyricist behind most of Nightwish's material. The band are from Finland except for two members.
Floor Jansen from The Netherlands (Now living in Sweden with her husband Hannes Vand Dahl, drummer of the band Sabaton, and their daughter Freya. born in March 2017.
Most vocalists (including Amy Lee - you are wise to avoid comparisons there as some of the fans get upset) sing what they can in the way they sound best - Floor, on the other hand, can sing what she wants and however she wants, and be top class in all of it. From opera to growling, folk to pop, over an extraordinary range in which her vocal registers overlap so far that she can move seamlessly between them. At 183cm she is tall even for a Dutchwoman, and that is without the heels she wears on stage!
At the time of this headlining appearance at Wacken Open Air festival in Germany, she had only been in the band for 10 months, and was still officially a touring stand-in - her permanent membership was not announced until a couple of months later, after the end of the tour and release of the final album of her own band, ReVamp.
You also see Emppu Vuorinen on lead guitar, holding back admirably to serve the song rather than show off - a characteristic shared by all members of Nightwish.
On bass you see Marko Hietala with the forked beard - also an excellent guitarist and lead vocalist in his own right, and on drums, Jukka Nevalainen, who has since had to step down as drummer due to health problems but is still a member and runs Nightwish business behind the scenes in management - he brought in Kai Hahto to replace himself.
Not in this song but also a member is Troy Donockley from the UK, another talented vocalist and extraordinary multi-instrumentalist, with a particular love of Celtic folk instruments.
Gabriel Bardac will be along shortly (unless he already has while I've been typing this) to give the full history of Nightwish, a role which was passed on to him by our late and dearly missed Nightwish archivist Ann Waychoff, who passed in June this year.
Nightwish and all the related bands (all members have other musical projects as well) are a hugely deep rabbit hole to dive into.

Floor Jansen is the most versatile singer I have ever seen comfortable range A3-D6 but can go above and below that and can growl down to Eb2. I suggest Romanticide next followed by Storytime, Song of myself and Ever Dream all from Wacken 2013.
The band was created in 1996 in Finland. Finland is the home of Metal with more bands per capita than anywhere in the world. This concert was at the Wacken Metal Festival in Germany in front of 82,000 people. This song was 13th in a 15 song set when they headlined in 2013.

Orchestra, London's The Metro Voices choir group and the London Young Musicians Children's Choir. Tuomas writes the music for the orchestra and choir and then Pip Williams of the London college of music arranges it. Tuomas sometimes wants more than the instruments are capable of giving.
Excuse me, may I enquire as to how you identified the pitch of her growls? As far as I know, almost all harsh vocals, but her growling for certain, are pitchless "noise", so I'd be really interested how you did that.

@@ew56 Thanks for your reply and for the link! It seems they classified it as vocal fry and based their assessment on that. However, to me it doesn't sound like vocal fry in any way, so I think they made the wrong call in that regard.
@@jakebronner2371 Not sure. The growls she does in Yours is an Empty Hope are clearly distinguishable words and seem to be about the same note as the one they use. I think the jury is out on this one.
@@ew56 I also don't think we can settle this here and now, but if you have some time, check out Mary Z's YT channel called "Voicehacks" if you don't know it yet, and have a look through her videos. She consistently states that growls are voiceless, pitchless noise, so even if it seems to have some kind of pitch, in reality it (almost always) doesn't.

As a huge Iron Maiden fan having grown up on them. I never thought any band could come close to being as good until I found this band Nightwish. It has been an incredible journey exploring their music ever since. This is the greatest music I have ever heard. It’s like a mixture of Iron Maiden, Metallica, Pink Floyd, and Rush I cannot get enough of them.

We got lucky. Saw Nightwish here in Chicago in March of 2018 at the Aragon Ballroom. Very close to the stage and a way smaller crowd. They were brilliant by the way.

Nightwish are a Finnish band. Floor Jansen, the vocal goddess, is Dutch, and she is the band's third lead female vocalist. They started out with Tarja Turunen, who is also Finnish. She left the band in 2005. Their second vocalist was Annette Olzen, who is Swedish. She left the band in 2012 during a tour, and Floor Jansen stepped in to fill the gap, originally for a short term stint, but they persuaded her to stay on, and she has become the definitive Nightwish vocalist.
Almost all of the band's music is written by Tuomas Holoppainen, who is the guy on the keyboards. The bass player, Marco Hietala, also has a damn fine singing voice. Emppu Vorainen on guitar and Jukka (oh, I can't remember his surname) on drums fill out this line-up. However, Jukka no longer plays with Nightwish, and their current drummer is Kai Hahto. In addition, they now also have Troy Donockly on any celtic instrument that can be blown or strummed (I think he plays about a dozen different instruments), and he also sings, but has a different vocal style from Marco.

Usually I go the same route when recommending new people to Nightwish been a fan of them for over 20 years. Stay with this concert Wacken 2013 and opening song with Dark Chest Of Wonders. You’ll be introduced to Floor Jansen just like the crowd of 82,000 she only had been ( not officially a full time member) with the band for 10 months. Excellent documentary on Floor and her arrival to Nightwish its title “Learn the Set List in 48 hours”. Ghost Love Score was the 13th song at this concert. There are no bad songs. You’ve gone down a worm hole with Nightwish. Do live because they are an incredible live band their albums are Masterpieces, but live is where to me they shine. I mentioned the 82,000 metal fans being introduced to Floor Jansen actually probably more than half new of her from her previous bands, Revamp, ( three incredible albums & her band) and her first band she joined at 17, After Forever.
