Before endurance and water sports existed, there was canoe paddling. Initially a vehicle used to hunt and fight has now become one of the largest growing fitness and endurance sports in the world. The U.S. outrigger canoe paddling team from Kona, the Red Bull Wa’a, have taken the age-old sport by storm and challenged the tenure of the Tahitian paddlers. For the Red Bull Wa’a, paddling isn’t just a means to peak personal strength - it’s spiritual. Team captain, Kainoa Tanoai, says "When you’re paddling for four hours a day, you’re focused on the goal of competing at the highest level, but you’re also focused on being one with the ocean and respecting the canoe, your teammates, and the sport.

Kind of amazing to see boat like this that is very similar to the bangka! Only difference is, the bangka has two outriggers, one on each side, whereas this Wa'a is a single outrigger design. Really a testament to how connected we all are.

There is something beautiful about when the the shape of the swell matches the arms to the Ama. One day I will have an outrigger and a place to put it.

Wa'a comes from Va'a which means canoe in Tahitian. Best AND most powerful teams in the world are from Tahiti and the hardest race is called Hawaiki (Havaiki Nui Va'a) and is taking place each year in French Polynesia (Huahine, Raiatea, Bora). Beautiful race.

Righto. Outrigger canoes are a common hallmark of Polynesian mariners. Actually was the vehicle used by austronesian expansion from madagascar to Hawaii and new Zealand to rapa nui.
