Love your work Quinn... On that note, I grew up on a remote island on Canada’s northwest coast, in a house next to the only sand beach on the island. There was an old rusting hulk of a ship jutting out into the sea that I was ordered by my grandfather not to play around as it contained dangers I was too young to understand. I was told that off the end of this ship, the shallows dropped away into the abyss, and on those rare extreme low tides that only happened a few times a year, I would see this edge. When I was very young, I was haunted by dreams of a monstrous form rising from the depths at this drop off, a mere 250 feet from where I slept. This form looked remarkably like what Lovecraft described. These dreams started when I was four and had never even heard of Cthulhu!?! I’m a professional mariner now and make my living from the sea, but every so often I’ll gaze into the depths below my punny little ship and feel those old feelings of dread again, knowing there are things down there we can never hope to know. PS, I didn’t invent a word of this... it’s all absolutely true.

I always loved the sobering feeling of existential dread that get from lovecraft, the sense of pure abyssmal meaningless existence we have in the universe. True horror dosent need any jumpscares or gore, just the truth that we constantly choose to ignore and how the real monsters dont hide under our beds, but instead under our skin.
Looking out onto a stormy New England sea right now, it’s early morning the sun has not risen yet. The tips of trees are barely visible about forty feet out, the light from our balcony barely reaching them. There is no moon tonight, but the sea is faintly illuminated by the street lights of a town about three miles up the road. I have lived both upon the New England coast and the deep woods of rural Massachusetts and Vermont. I love this region of the country, I grew up here, but I can’t lie and say that I’ve never looked out into the woods of rural Vermont or the grey waters of a stormy cape cod and felt an odd sense of melancholy and even dread. It is this foreboding environment mixed with the beauty of winter and fall here that makes it easy for me to understand how this place has produced both nature loving transcendentalists like Thoreau and Emerson, and horror writers like Lovecraft and King. Jeez that was a bit of tirade, hope you all have a good Halloween. I get moody during my morning tea.
Good cuthulu-esque movie; "In The Mouth of Madness", in which an author ascends to godhood, from the perspective of that author's protagonist as that protagonist is being written into reality. It takes a couple of watches, like Donnie Darko, but it's so good.
I loved this! But about "no good Lovecraft adaptations": I thought the recent film version of "Color Out of Space" was a phenomenal adaptation. It wasn't based off any of the "Old Ones" stories which are likely more difficult to convey, but it did capture the Lovecraft feel of something that didn't belong among humankind very well.
I thought it was very well done also! Even Nic Cage was great and I'm not a big fan of him. I always feel that when movie makers modernize Lovecrafts stories, that the stories lose something in translation, but this film stayed true to the story.
“The Oldest Emotion of Mankind is Fear, and the Oldest Fear is that of the Unknown.” -H.P. Lovecraft, Supernatural Horror In Literature. Seriously though, this was a great talk about Lovecraft. Hope to see more stuff. See you soon. Also, have you considered looking into the “H.P. Lovecraft Historical Society”? They have some interesting material all dealing with Lovecraft’s stuff. There’s their films that they’ve done, and they’ve also done audio dramas called, “Dark Adventure Radio Theatre”, which when you get the CD, you get props made by HPLHS related to the story.
You should check out the Japanese manga adaptations of H. P. Lovecraft's stories, by Tanabe Gou. Tanabe does a lot of horror-themed manga, and Lovecraft is one of his focuses. He does a really great job bringing Lovecraft's stories to life. Some of them have been translated to English. I don't think Tanabe's version of The Call of Cthulhu has been translated to English yet, but I have it in Japanese and it's brilliant. I really recommend checking out his stuff.
They have such a local tradition of giant monsters (the name escapes me at this late hour), and especially marine ones. The cross over between Lovecraft's stories and his own traditions might be awesome.
"The Void" is a good film with a Lovecraftian vibe! There is also a great Spanish film called "Dagon", which combines elements of various HPL stories including Dagon and Shadow over Insmouth. Quite satisfying to watch!

Enjoy your Lovecraft reviews very much. Having read Lovecraft as a teenager in the 1960s I was surprised when young people told me they also enjoyed his books. You've given me some great ideas for Halloween, my favorite holiday.
I swear my dude, you gotta start an sci-fi audio book channel if you haven't already. Also, I love that Annihilation plug because it was a damn fun read. I still need to see the movie and finish reading the trilogy.
Awesome. I grew up right near Lovecraft. Used to visit his grave and home all the time. I’ve read him and those that followed in his mythos for a long time. This video is greatly appreciated!
Re-Animator is a pretty legit HP adaptation. It's obviously a pulpy B-horror, but Stuart Gordon does some good work and Jeffrey Combs really gives the character some life on screen.
If you're looking for a pretty faithful Lovecraftian adaptation, check out The Resurrected. It's a film adaptation of The Case of Charles Dexter Ward, and stars John Terry and Chris Sarandon.
Lovecraft was the perfect horror suspense writer able to convey the dread without actually describing the gore so much. None of his stories has been brought to film successfully.
Stephen King wrote a short story called Crouch End (which is a place here in London, UK). It's based on Cthulhu. They made a REALLY pants TV movie of it. It's actually almost funny. The story is excellent though
Love all you do Quinn. You cover all of my favorite book series and now my absolute favorite. The cosmic horror of H.P.LOVECRAFT. Thank you for all the time and effort, and for inspiring me into doing my own voice over work.
This was amazing, Quinn! The quality of your videos has increased exponentially. I enjoyed the deep dive into the lore and the artwork you picked out really ramped up the creep factor. The story with you and the cult was well done. Kinda sheisty to try and sell out your brothers though. Happy Halloween 🎃!
I think the true horror of lovecraft is not the old ones, but the fear of them the fear of the unknown and what people under their influence will do, be it cults or madness. As soon as you try to depict the old ones the horror is gone in my opinion.
HE AGREES..... "The oldest and strongest emotion of mankind is fear, and the oldest and strongest kind of fear is fear of the unknown." Howard Phillip Lovecraft
There are a good number of stories that don't use the old ones but still follow that fear of the unknown, the outsider, or the wrong. The Lurking Fear is a good one where there are no cults and no old ones, but it's honestly one of the more terrifying stories of his and the monsters boil down to inbred nobility living underground for generations and becoming cannibal ghouls. So the old ones are sort of ancillary to the stories, and it seems HP thought so too since most of his stories don't reuse them
Well done sir! Tip of the hat! That took some serious time, work, energy, and edits. In a word, superb! What a treat! And nearly zero tricks... Happy Halloween Quinn 👻 🎃

Enjoy your Lovecraft reviews very much. Having read Lovecraft as a teenager in the 1960s I was surprised when young people told me they also enjoyed his books. You've given me some great ideas for Halloween, my favorite holiday.
Loved the intro, thank you. Now I have an unfitting big dumb smile on my face.
Funny so do I. But then again I did 2 grams of magic mushrooms.😂😂😂😂😂
I can't believe you used a castle from my home (Romania) for extra spookiness. Corvins' Castle is a really awesome place to visit
I never comment but the effort put into this video was great and I thoroughly enjoyed it
This was a nice change of pace and an amazing Halloween special! This was great Quinn, thanks man.
I would love to have a library of audio books narrated by Quinn. I'll try to catch up with the videos of this channel that I missed. Great content...
Same.
Dude, you ROCK, I loved this, thank you for making a happy halloween!
Re-Animator is just it's own thing. The original is a classic, and some of the sequels were worthwhile.
thats the one where the guys severed head goes down on that lady right
Hey brother. Just found your channel a few days ago and had to say thanks. Your content is fantastic. Keep it up!
Lovecraft was the perfect horror suspense writer able to convey the dread without actually describing the gore so much. None of his stories has been brought to film successfully.
A picture is worth a thousand words, but words have pacing that pictures can't convey.
The Thing was apparently Lovecraftian based. John Carpenters version is one of the best movies ever made.
Stephen King wrote a short story called Crouch End (which is a place here in London, UK). It's based on Cthulhu. They made a REALLY pants TV movie of it. It's actually almost funny. The story is excellent though
@@SexRealist301 “pants”?
Love all you do Quinn. You cover all of my favorite book series and now my absolute favorite. The cosmic horror of H.P.LOVECRAFT. Thank you for all the time and effort, and for inspiring me into doing my own voice over work.
The most horryfuying thing in this video is how Quinn handles the supposedly ancient books.
Come on man, show more care!
In all honesty, fear of pain probably predates fear of the unknown.
@@TheTheode Sure but that's a different genre :)
@@TheTheode Fear of the unknown kind of encapsulates fear of pain.
So the old ones are sort of ancillary to the stories, and it seems HP thought so too since most of his stories don't reuse them
This content is why I joined Patreon. This video is epic and a good intro to Lovecraft. Bravo good sir!
Quinn: Occult Investigations... XD
Well done sir! Tip of the hat! That took some serious time, work, energy, and edits. In a word, superb! What a treat! And nearly zero tricks... Happy Halloween Quinn 👻 🎃
That image at the 8:25ish mark is of Black Annis, my home city’s ancient folklore monster. Nice to see a local celebrity make the RUclips big time!
So cool, to live by the ocean (I also did for years), and, in a place with such rich local lore.
Would so enjoy getting pints with old captains, in the evening, somewhere in the harbour.
black anus you say?
Hey brother, been following you for some time. My friend Jerry (80+ years old), was friends with August Derleth who published HP Lovecraft's books. So now you are 3 degrees to Lovecraft. :) You're welcome!
so early that there aren't any comments to read so that i accidently don't pay attention to the video :/
it's really good!
Found my way to your channel via Dune. I've fallen down a rabbit hole and fallen in love with your work.
If I had the funds, I'd join your Patreon immediately.
You did such a great job with this, really brought the story to life
Quinn, the voice actor you got for Organism 9186 is absolutely *slaying*. you should give them a raise and a hug.
Unless I miss my guess, that is Quinn dong the voice. Something about the speech patterns feels similar.
Worse than finding yourself in a Lovecraft story would be finding yourself in a Nicholas Sparks book.
Wow, okay this is the first video of yours I'm watching and I had to pause it to comment 11 seconds in. What an opening shot! What a sound scape! And by jove what a voice!
This has such early 2000s internet energy, I'm I'm here for it
This has seriously become my new favorite channel, awesome work.
God, this video is dripping with atmosphere, I LOVE IT
How have I not discovered this channel before now?! He's genre savvy, got a voice like caramel and looks like a snack.
Definitely going to be exploring these videos.
Hey Quinn I started watching all the dune videos you done with such love so far due to the new movie. I gotta say you have a wonderful content channel. If it is not too much you should consider joining up with the Exploring Series who did quite a few reads of the Lovecraft works in full.
I think you guys would make an amazing podcast and read.
Your complete guides are immaculate, please consider doing more?! Your narration is top notch..
Video starts at 7:11
Love the intro thank you for what you do do Quinn always keeping me entertained and interested in beautiful stories
Your vids production has come so far dude! Super pro 👋💯🔥
Quinn has ALL the props 😳👍
Quinn, your neediness is palpable and contagious. Love your videos.
That was awesome! My fave Lovecraft adaptation was Beyond the Wall of Sleep. It was effed up and funny as hell. I live not to far from the Danvers Mental Institution. Heard stories about that place that would make your hair stand on end!
Hilarious storyteller figure and the B-Movie effects reminds me of The Crypt Keeper, Weird Tales and The Twilight Zone along with interesting information and a voice that fits.
Loved it! Well done! 👾🐙
Quinn is out here doing the good work, like Reading Rainbow for adults. Sadly that show was canceled, but Quinn is here.
Man, your channel has become my favorite channel on youtube, your narrations are awesome you should do the voices for audiobooks
I love your content bro this is brilliant. Really well done. I love it! Nice outfit
OMG! You do have the exact correct voice to read all this stories and SPOOK the hell out of me!!! Man! ;)
Irony is getting a Christian singles add with this video.
I got that, too. Gotta say, I needed a laugh 😈
Me three
God and Cthulhu go way back man. Who do you think God talked to all that time before he made the universe?
You too 🤣
@johnmburt1960 That actual sounds pretty interesting. I might have to give that a read as I've tired to mix the mythologies into one once before, but couldn't figure out how to mix in the Lovecraft Mythos.
This channel is a true gem! Can't believe it I'm only stumbling into it now.
perfect when i can’t sleep! i’ve been meaning to read this story but i’m just going to listen to you talk about it!
If you use Audible the books are amazing there! The collections are read by Wayne June, the narrator from the game "Darkest Dungeon". His voice is amazing and perfect for Lovecraft's writing.
Read it anyway🧏♀️🐙
I appreciate your exuberance for Lovecraft and his Cthulhu Mythos. Great work dude.
Fantastic. I was just looking for some Lovecraft!
Great piece Quinn! I just watched the spanish horror movie "Dagon" based on Lovecraft's universe on Prime video, and this has been the perfect dessert.
Dude, you should do audiobooks. What does it take to become a narrator? I think you'd nail it.
Mr Quinn, digging this videos my guy. Finished the 3 Body Problem ones and now happy to check out a Lovecraft one! Thanks for these, just started reading 3BP and excited to see what you come out with next
I'm so glad Quinn's finally doing more Lovecraft videos. This is some GOOD SHIT.
Your videos are really superb. I know it sounds pretentious to phrase it like that, but I can't find a better word to describe them. You are a smart, funny, well spoken, well educated guy, and that shows in your videos.
WOW! This video is a masterpiece. I love the content and the suspense you created while talking about Cthulu, but all the comedy with the Organism was hilarious! I had a great, spooky time watching this.
Also, wow the Organism is such a dick! You'd be great at writing villains.
Just finding this! Awesome job Quinn! Please do more!
I just absolutely love the cosmic horror history from HP Lovecraft
Your passion for the Master Lovecraft does you credit, sir. Marvellously atmospheric and humorous meta piece which would be worthy of the Elder Gods' cruel amusement. I shall put in a good word for you when the Great Old Ones return...
I would highly recommend the whole southern reach triology to anyone that is into lovecraft.
Man I love your channel so much! Dune and Lovecraft! Can’t go wrong. You got style my friend, your channel is bespoke to you
Thank you, Oh Great and Mighty Quinn! - I've been working all through the night on a text I had to have ready in the morning (it's morning right now here) - and the first thing after sending the shit by E-mail was finding your superbe Halloween-Easteregg on RUclips! I watched it with bloodshot eyes - and soooo happy!!! You saved my soul!! Greetings from Austria!
"I have four brothers, you can take any one of them!" Thrown under the BUS! This was very fun, I'm glad I stumbled across it!
You truly have to wonder, just what HP Lovecraft’s life was like, if you could see through his eyes and be apart of his dreams.
Love the video, mixture of narration and also dramatization works super well
