Algae is Taking Over my Nano Reef Tank: Clean Up Crew

  • Some time after you set up a reef tank, algae starts to grow all over the aquascape and glass of the aquarium. This is not bad for the aquarium, it is part of the reef tank cycle. But it sure does look bad!
In this video, we're introducing a clean up crew to my 6 gallon nano reef tank from Reef Casa. We are adding a snail to clean the sand of the reef tank and two hermit crabs to eat the algae off of the rock scape and coral. But before we do that, we have to do reef tank maintenance. Let's check out this aquarium update!

Which animal should we add next? 🐠🦐 I’m still figuring out the best settings to use while filming this tank, throughout this video I tested a few different settings. Which part was your favorite?

My favorite part was full tank at 6:53
For fish just about any goby works. Some gobys are jumpers though, so be careful. I personally think a clown goby would be best for this tank because they are small, colorful, and have an interesting relationship with coral.
Other than that, watch out for your hermit crabs! If you don't provide the hermit crabs with new shells (in the tank) they will kill each other and the snail.
Love your videos! keep up the good work

With access to sterile plankton readily available, make sure this is the first thing you add to the a new tank for the first few weeks. This will colonise the surface quickly and prevent other less desirable algaes to grow later. It will however give everything a tint of green initially.

I do not know about you guys, but I like the water level to be all the way up to the rim of that tank. Can I dill the water all the way up to the rim? You have like a 1 inch gap from the water level to the rim of that tank. I just feel that its more beautiful when the tank is filled to the rim. There are some tanks that do not allow you to fill it all the way up.

This is your first over flow setup, I've asked before about ato. Usually these are a must with over flow aio setups since the level hight is very sensitive before picking up air. Do you plan to run one on this 6g?

Yes. It’s a big misconception that you can’t do that earlier lol. I waited two days for things to settle a bit. I know people who add corals the same day. Of course, SPS corals won’t like it, but LPS and especially soft corals will be just fine. In fact, it will help with the cycle. With fish and inverts, you should wait.
