Hank's actually right with the animal cave! One exists (albeit a small one). There's a rhino cave in the state of Washington that was created when lava cooled and hardened around the body.
Excited geologist here, Holes in rocks have lots of different and sometimes overlapping names because there's so many different reasons for them to exist! The most all encompassing terms I can think of are "Cavity" and "Void". They could be used for microscopic holes or a hole big enough to put a building in. mm to cm sized holes might be called a "vug" or a "vesicle" depending on the cause. Sometimes we might just say "Air bubble" also can be this size and smaller. I actually think defining Cave as a hole large enough for a person is a pretty good definition. Cavern definitely implies a space large enough for many people standing up and possibly buildings. As mentioned by someone else, we often name things in relation to how the cavity was created. Lava tubes (formed by the lava hardening on the outside but continuing to flow on the inside) can be large enough to fit people and therefore can sometimes be traversed by spelunkers but also sometimes they aren't. So a lava tube can be a cave using our person size definition but isn't always. The term karst system is used only for cave systems in soluble rock like limestone etc. because the landforms created by the dissolution of the rock are very particular (and spectacular). Naming taxonomies are hard, people 😂

As someone who reads a lot of sci fi/fantasy, I concur with this definition of cavern. Now please excuse me, I must go learn more about "vugs".
Okay but what Brennan said about lava tubes is so spot on. I went in one on a family vacation and everyone was like "wow so beautiful!" and I was just filled with this overwhelming feeling of like evil and bad and like I shouldn't be there, I'm not meant to be in here. Never felt that way in other caves, just that lava tube.
Me while watching a ton of caving videos: 'I don't know very much about caves' Me while watching the first 15 minutes of this video: 'Okay maybe I know an above average amount about caves' Great fun.
CAVES?! And BRENNAN?!!! Bestill my lil nerdy Geologist heart. FYI, cave, cavern and void are all basically interchangeable terms but geologists typically use the term “karst” when referring to caves and related structures (like sinkholes, towers, poljes, etc.). Granted, karst is a wider encompassing word, but caves often occur with this type of terrain (soluble rock with a tendency to become Swiss cheese). This doesn’t include lava tubes or tectonic caves as far as I know (I’m not a speleologist however so I’m not an expert. I’m just a hydrogeologist in Florida, and we just have solution limestone and dolostone caverns).
