Academic Freedom at Risk After Decades of Right-Wing Attacks and Cuts to Education

  • As higher education faces an increasingly dire crisis of underfunding, we look at one of the consequences of this crisis: the growing threat to academic freedom. Academic and author Henry Reichman takes on this threat in a new book, out this week, titled “The Future of Academic Freedom.” In it, he writes, “Academic capitalism-or, as many term it, ’corporatization’-has greatly impacted academic work and the ability of the faculty to unite in defense of professional norms, including academic freedom.” Academic capitalism is just one of a number of topics Reichman tackles in the book, which starts by asking what academic freedom is, and expands to look at the loss of public funding for institutions of higher education and the harassment of faculty members for political speech.

I cannot thank Democracy Now enough for featuring this new, important critique of contemporary higher ed in U.S.
It is high time for the general public to be informed and to begin a public conversation about the consequences of corporatized academic institutions.

Under a Capitalistic Economy & Society Money is the sole driver and Money does what it does best - Breeds Corruption & Corrupt Policy & Practices. Here there no Souls & therefore Morality & Ethics are absent Qualities in Humans.

Get private money out of universities, or watch the entire system die, along with America's leadership in research and education. This is yet another excellent justification for public funding of colleges and universities.

@Main Street Boxer precisely so. Corporatization has been an unmitigated disaster for the unfettered inquiry for which higher education was once known.

What do you call the act of selling a product you are not providing.. I was raised in America and sold the idea of the melting pot and so where generations of Americans who past our lady liberty who's plaque reads... (Not like the brazen giant of Greek fame,
    With conquering limbs astride from land to land;
Here at our sea-washed, sunset gates shall stand
A mighty woman with a torch, whose flame
Is the imprisoned lightning, and her name
MOTHER OF EXILES. From her beacon-hand
Glows world-wide welcome; her mild eyes command
The air-bridged harbor that twin cities frame.
"Keep, ancient lands, your storied pomp!" cries she
With silent lips. "Give me your tired, your poor,
Your huddled masses yearning to breathe free,
The wretched refuse of your teeming shore.
Send these, the homeless, tempest-tost to me,
I lift my lamp beside the golden door!")
Our country was made on the backs of immigrants and the promise of equality for all.
Clearly, in this light there is some form of false advertisement happening here..

I need to also say that my own academic freedom was inhibited. While taking chemistry classes in my undergrad as a biology premed major, I inadvertently discovered an amazing property of delta-9-tetrahydrocannabinol, known to most people as THC. I applied to over 100 medical schools and admitted part of what I had discovered about THC. I was denied to all the schools, despite having high grades and getting a 30 on the MCAT. Then, I applied to graduate school, thinking that maybe we would be more academically free there, but I was denied to a similar number of schools. Honestly, I don't remember what my score was on the GRE but it was near the top of the people taking it that year. I guess the bottom line is that universities rely on federal grants for their graduate research and, since Cannabis is federally illegal, I couldn't get one of those grants and no institution was willing to stand up for my research, despite the fact that I got non-cancerous tumors to shrink using something I made from the Cannabis plant. Academia is already too political and, if we let it slip even a small margin more, it endangers our democracy and it endangers the wellbeing of humans in the future. Now, I barter with people in exchange for what I discovered, but I'd really like to get it out to the public at large because so many people could benefit from it. In the disease I was looking at (because I have it and it runs in my family) they were only able to shrink these tumors using chemotherapy for cancer. Once a person's body could no longer handle chemotherapy and it was stopped, the tumors grew back in the same places and caused the same medical problems. I found a way to shrink them so long as a person keep using Cannabis and a person can use that for the rest of their lives without incurring additional medical problems, let alone the widespread systems failures that can be caused by chemotherapy. It's something that's obviously important to medicine but no one gives an intellectual damn about it simply and only because the treatment derives from Cannabis. It's an incredible amount of bullshit and it's doing human beings harm. So much for do no harm...

The fall of knowledge for the sake of knowledge is depressing. Education is supposed to be about self-development, cultural awareness, and cross-cultural awareness, not just about getting a job. But our public schools are set up to mimic factory work conditions and the Humanities have all but been eliminated from their curriculums, so it's not surprising that Americans don't learn to think critically...
