Fascinating alternative view of Lincoln. 👏
However I feel it misses one forgotten key Lincoln story I read in an old Frank Bettger self-help book.
Lincoln was an up-and-coming lawyer in Illinois and faced a pivotal court case against the mid West's best-known lawyer.
The case was about the bridges the railways wanted to build over the Mississippi (the railroad companies mentioned in this video)... VS the powerful riverboat lobby who sued the railway companies to stop them.
The great mid Western lawyer gave a powerful, eloquent two hour monologue to the jury on the *rights* of the humble and good riverboatmen of the Mississippi. He sat down to rapturous applause.
Lincoln got up and said two sentences:
"What this man has said on rights is entirely true. You just have to consider: do the people going up and down the river have *more* rights than those going across...?"
He sat down and won the court case.
Similar story happened with two speeches at Gettysburg... but Lincoln did a slightly longer speech than his court case one. 😏

I believe Larry intended to make a philosophical point with the title. It's not that Lincoln is forgotten himself. It's that politicians twist who he was into a symbol, rather than a person with flaws. In that sense, the real man has been forgotten as the historical figure has become mythologized.

I genuinely hate the talk around this movie and especially how Nate and Andis friends and how they're in any way the victims in this, the hospitality industry at that level is almost identical to the fashion industry so he's absolutely done the exist thing in their relationship. He knows how much a year like this could progress her career and he knows when she goes into it that its only for a year. Yes she changes and she has to cancel a lot of social commitments but she's never mean about it, she just stops being such a doormat and they hate that, and are perfectly happy to potentially ruin her career at Runway by keeping her work phone from her.
Yes the main point of the movie is that great ambition leads to great sacrifice and unhappiness, but it's also about how when you choose to be more for yourself then there is a huge chance you will lose everyone around you who doesn't like that you stick up for yourself and you are going to have to live with that.
I genuinely feel like so much of the nuance of the movie is ignored because it's about fashion and is immediately seen as shallow, because that's how almost all of the talk around it is and it's such a basic take. Miranda and Andi are seen as terrible dragon ladies because their ambition is in a shallow and "worthless" field, and Nate/the friends are seen as in the right because Andi by actually having faith in herself and her appearance she's seen as betraying them because they're not progressing at the same rate. Far too often self love is just written off as narcissism especially when it's "unexpected" and it's such bs.

We didn't exactly have Simon's production notes or his production crew, so we just kind of had to make adjustments as we went. I've made it my mission over the last couple months to make the audio as clean and polished as I can, since Jen's team is more focused on making the visuals. That's why I switched from the lav mic. The quality just wasn't there. There's still a lot of work to do before I'm satisfied, but the whole team appreciates your support.

    Lincoln Anecdote
    ++++
As a military captain during the Black Hawk War, Lincoln and his men came across an elderly Native man.
His unit wanted to torment and abuse the old man. Lincoln refused to let them. Undaunted, the men protested Lincoln’s order.
Lincoln persisted. He said that if any man wanted to harm the elderly Native man, they would first have to wrestle and defeat him.
His unit protested, saying that it was known that Lincoln was the strongest and best wrestler in the unit.
Lincoln then looked at the men and said “Choose your weapon.”
Literally willing to die for an elderly Native American. A complete stranger.

Given that Abe Lincoln and his wife lost two young children and Abe Lincoln also had to run the war with all the stresses that involved as well as making the kinds of decisions that most of us never have to and that Mary Lincoln had her husband shot in the back of the head right next to her, an experience alone that would unhinge most women, I think your opening comments about their mental health is a little unfair and I say this as an Englishman who served in the army and have been on active service, in fact, I was born in Manchester, Lancashire, England where we have a statue of Abraham Lincoln, given to us by America for the great hardship and unemployment that resulted from Lancashire cotton workers refusing to work with cotton from the south, which is stated on a plaque on the statue, a fact that I and Mancunians and Lancastrians are still very proud of, and I believe that just like Churchill and Franklin Roosevelt, Lincoln was the right man at the right time.

He did hate slavery for moral reasons, but figured getting to abolish it wholesale would get him nowhere, so his platform was keeping it from expanding. That was enough for the South to throw a tantrum after he won, despite their attempts to rig it by simply not giving southern voters the option to vote for him.
