13:37 put some wet wood close to the fire to dry out. Also if you need to, locate a fallen pine tree. Then onto the roots. Cut off some roots. The pine resin gathers in the roots of a fallen pine and solidifies there. You’ll notice it’s all reasony at the roots cross section. Take a blade and scrape that hard resin and make a pile. It will burn even when wet because it’s not water soluble. Use this to dry your kindling and so on. Hope that helps you 😊 Luv and support from 🇨🇦

As a Michigander I really enjoy camping as well. I went up to a nice area near Petoskey last year and it was great. However since you're camping alone please be careful. It's best to have extra phone chargers, self defense devices, and a first aid kit for sure.

You are an attractive young lady. While the areas you are in a usually very very safe, there isn't much law enforcement either. Please consider getting a CPL and at least some basic training to follow it up. Even if you have someone else with you that we don't see. Please consider it and stay safe.

I was scared watching it. So was she. She packed up and left immediately. However she was also prepared with her firearms and she was well trained as her father was a marine corp vet. Just saying. That gust of wind that caught you by surprise is a very good example, (though you probably would've been fine then seeing that you were basically on shore). You are a gutsy lady doing all this solo and learning along the way. That being said, mother nature is not in the least forgiving and does care about you. Your level of experience is low, so one small misfortune or bad move you probably will be ok. But things tend to occur in clumps. It is when the problems pile up and the unexpected happens people don't come home. So please be careful, work on your skillsets and listen to the wisdom of those who have been there and have done it.

I wasn't going to say anything but from 30:55 , I recommend bringing a pew-pew along in a floating dry-bag. In case of venomous snakes, etc, I also carry a Zoleo, which has a "medical advice" option for texting via satellite as well as the SOS button for venom, etc.
Ohh I didn’t realize Zoleo has a medical advice option. That seems pretty useful. I have a garmin InReach Messenger and I was debating between the two when I bought it
If it helps on dealing with wind and wave...have a foam pad so you can drop down to your knees and brace you backside against the seat...this will lower you weight ...connects you with the canoe so you can move with it instead of perched on top. I also recommend taking your canoe to a safe place and just practice falling out of it and safely getting back in...its important to know when it will roll and what it feels like...and what to do when it happens. Your camp meals are very impressive. Enjoying your vides ....thanks!

If the thumping sound you heard was a repeating thumping sound that gets faster and faster then slows down before stopping, it is likely a male grouse trying to attract some ladies. As a Michigan native, it is enjoyable and remind me of boy scouting in the Lower Peninsula. You do a great job showing how to canoe camp and all the fun and issues you get. A very nice video. It would benefit you to watch some bushcraft/outdoor survival videos and learn what to do in any situation. It pays to have a good pocket knife and a decent survival knife with you as well as multiple fire starting options such as a lighter, matches, Ferro rod, etc. Anyhow, I won't preach atcha. 😂 Thanks for bringing us along on your adventure. 🌳⛺🪵🔥🐟😊
I love how authentic your videos are. With so many outdoor channels, everything just seems perfect, but you show the real struggles and challenges. May I ask what canoe you have? Mine's from the '70s and it weighs a ton. I'd really like to get something lighter.
Supernice video :). Quick tip: When the water is getting a bit choppy, try crossing your feet under your seat. This gives you much more stability in the canoe, by being able to push your knees out to the sides.
New viewer and love the fact to you have a lot of gear with you. Minimalist campers don’t impress me much. I think you’re a class act and like that you have the equipment to camp in style. Also, I like your menu choices, definitely camping in style!
Haha I’ve been trying so hard to pare down but I realized I just am not a minimalist camper. One of the reasons I love canoe camping and I struggle with backpacking lol…thank you so much 😊
@@Apeaceofthewoods When I canoe I wear one life vest and put another one in the bottom of the canoe to cushion my knees. Plus if you go over you have extra flotation to save yourself or some gear. Plus a life vest can keep body heat from escaping in cold weather or cold water. Flotation is excellent insulation to wear under wet clothes or in a survival shelter.

We've been going there for a while now. 7-10 days at a time, eat fish everyday. If for some reason we don't catch enough or don't feel like eating fish, we have rations. Instant coffee, oatmeal, potatoes, noodles and such. It's about a 8 or 9 hour drive for us. We like Big Island camp spot but Townline is flatter and more open to sky viewing at night. We usually go in September, no bugs! I just skimmed through your video, so forgive me if you mentioned any of this.

It may have been mentioned in the other comments, but the “thumping” you heard was likely a Ruffed Grouse drumming. A quick RUclips search will show you what it looks like. The sound can really carry through the forest.
I enjoyed this vid and subbed your channel. I watch all the content makers who do this sort of thing. I have been going to places like this a long time and i still get that stressed feeling over weather, animals etc, but it what we do for our fun. It's all worth it when you catch a nice fish or hear the symphony of birds. There are a lot of swainson's thrushes in there too, and barred owls at night to add to the sound. First time i heard a grouse drumming when i was a kid I thought it was man-made. Take care

But the rewards are so worth it like you said. There is nothing that compares to the peace you get being out in a remote place in nature.

Also ..a little tip. When you can't get that wood going...make a teepee with the sticks leaving a opening on one side ...slide the stove in there and you will have your fire in no time at all...then slide the stove out . Remember bear spray and a rope to hang you food from tree and don't leave anything like food ,tooth paste etc. in camp.
Hi little lady it's Tony I totally commend you with your solo camping I'm the same way I would like to suggest that you take pool noodles and put it on your canoe so it doesn't mess up your new car and also put the pool noodles on your tripod so if you should go over it with the canoe you don't lose your camera and you can use zip ties I had mentioned to you in the past that I have done lots of camping usually if wood is wet it's weird on the outside so if you peel that off the inside is dry to get the fire going and then you put the wet next to it so it dries out I don't know where your camping but if there's bears in the area or even mountain lions do not keep your food next to you put it up in a tree I use a plastic bag and a nylon bag to hold the plastic one and I have like a 50 ft rope that I throw over the limb keep it at least 10 ft Plus off the ground do not keep food in your tent or on you hey here's another thought why don't you get kayak paddles I would like to wish you the best be safe and I'll see you in the next video may God bless you
Hey Tony!! Thank you again for the advice. I actually did get a kayak paddle ☺️ haha my old car was so scratched up from my canoe I’m shocked I was able to trade it in. Hoping to not do the same to this one. I’ve been a lot more careful. I also started using a GoPro in the canoe in case of an unfortunate overboard situation lol. Never thought about using pool noodles to secure it. You’re full of ideas! And yes, absolutely agree when it comes to the bear safety! ☺️☺️☺️
Glad you found the campsite. When in a remote place like that it's best to stick to a known area. That one windey spot was probably a place whre the existing winds funneled into a wind shear to beat you up a bit. And you just can't go wrong with hotdogs. BTW, has anyone ever told you that you resemble a younger prettier version of Donna Summer? Maybe you could sing She works hard for the money. That would be appropriate for how hard you work to accomplish your adventures. Be safe.

Awesome video! You can get that hook out of the rope with pliers..just use the pliers to crimp down the barb on the hook and wiggle back out the way it went in. The barb is the pointy thing near the hook point. I always carry a couple pair of pliers fishing for getting hooks out of fish etc. the good ones have where you can cut the extra line after tying on a lure…
I just got some new pliers but I don’t think they can clip the extra line so maybe they aren’t that good. I brought finger nail clippers lol. Thank you for the advice ☺️
I'm enjoying watching your videos this is truly amazing and the food looks great not many people know how to cook on a open fire .you really seem to enjoy the outdoors camping and the way you handle the canoe its not your first ride its really nice. I live in the deep southern United States summer time is not the time to camp here way to hot spring and fall are wonderful though.I just wanted to say be careful out there and have fun you really seem like someone to hang out with camping and all but most of all be careful the world needs more people like yourself. Great location ,, maybe a multi-day outing at some time and get to explore the other lakes .... with more outings you will develop more confidence .. as other comments have mentioned ,, work on the J-stroke , constant swapping side can get exhausting ,, and carry a double paddle as a second ..... when confronted with wind swells to white caps ,, never get yourself with waves onto your sides , uncomfortable stability and chance of getting flipped ... on rough waters paddle into 1/4 angles ( zig-zag) ,, a little more effort but not likely to turn over ... plus have all your packs & gear tethered to a thwart just in case so you won't lose any ... .. WOW!! that roast beef pot looked awesome .. and agree , when canoe camping ,a few comfort items like a cot to help get better sleep ,,are not much of an issue .. Stay Safe ..
You are 💯 I am feeling more confident with each trip…although I still have a ways to go. I have carried a second double paddle from the start…mostly as a backup in case I lost the single paddle. I now tend to use the double paddle more because of what you described above…at least until I can become more proficient with the J stroke. The zig zag concept you explained makes sense! Thank you! I did hear that I should not travel with waves coming from my side but now that you’ve explained it I understand how to do that while continuing in the direction I need to. You are the first person who has actually seen the show! I actually hope there isn’t another season because I know I won’t refrain from watching and it the last thing I want to be thinking about while camping.
A decent fixed blade knife in your pack will allow you to split down some of the wood that you found to the sizes that you need. You may consider adding this to your pack in the future. I know you have mentioned Alexis outdoors videos and she has a ton where she is processing wood for firewood. It does not have to be a huge knife to do this effectively there are a ton available with around a 4” blade that would do a superb job.
Thank you! I do have a fixed blade knife but haven’t mastered the skill of batoning wood as of yet. I have seen Alexis Outdoors process wood like a pro and hopefully in time will get there 😊😊
i love your enduring sprit. i watched your other 2 videos first and i would like to suggest a piece of equipment if your going to play in the UP. its a big place and if your walking in the wrong direction your can go for a long ways without seeing anybody. so all that said, if you dont have one of these you should very much consider getting one. this model is my personal favorite Garmin eTrex Legend its an older model but very user friendly. i like my slightly newer color screen one best its the Legend Cx (it seems to have a little more power and picks up more satellites).

@@Apeaceofthewoods So a couple things about the differences in the two. Here is my disclaimer, all I know about the In-Reach is the quick overview of what it does on the Garmin website aka: you quite possibly know more about what it does that I do. From what I see the In-Reach is a “Communication device with a side of “this is where I am” the Legend is strictly a “this is where I am” device. The Legend needs no subscription, put in two AA batteries turn it on and it works (I’ve had the batteries last for several days depending on use). The “Track” function makes a trail on the screen of where you’ve traveled and can be zoomed in/out. The “Mark” feature lets you “drop a pin” where you are (say your campsite) then you can use the “GoTo” to get back to that spot. You can also use Google Earth to find a spot you would like to see/visit, put the GPS coordinates in the Legend and GoTo that spot using the “Bearing” reading on the Legend. In a nutshell that’s the biggest difference I see. The In-Reach seems (note disclaimer) to be a “Help im lost” kinda thing where as the Legend will get you out on your own. Not saying the Reach isn’t a good device to have it is but, as a “Boomer” there's just not a lot of stuff on it I personally would use. 🙂
I've had the etrex 35t for navigation and the mini for safety. Sold them both to buy the inreach 66i. It does both functions. The Garmin software absolutely sacks but it does work. One device is so m7ch easier. The new 67i is supposed to have better software.... check the RUclips reviews/comparisons.
I use a much less expensive Canadian brand called Zolio. Yes, in order to text, you need a cell phone, but you can use it by itself if you only want to send interval “breadcrumb” gps checkins to whomever. Works great for me so far. I don’t hike a lot, so I only keep the svc enabled when I go
Big Isle wilderness and Sylvania wilderness were some of my favorites to camp, this type of camping is sorta like my happy place, I only wish I had cooking skills like you, and I died laughing when you said “people monsters that’ll eat you”, that killed me! I like how you include all the little mishaps on your trips, it’s very relatable, also you’re a very likable person and can see your channel growing, if you choose to, so I hope you continue to get out any chance you get, and don’t get eaten by people monsters!👍
Me too! I love BILW and canoe camping has become my favorite style of camping. Haha it does come with a lot of mishaps since I’m just getting started. Omg have you watched that show?? I just want to add one more thing, maybe you already know about the J stroke, but incase you haven’t, the J stroke is a paddling technique that allows you to paddle on just one side of your canoe, it’s more efficient compared to the constant flipping of the paddle to your left and right, it’s simple to learn, and when done correctly your canoe will stay more straight and move with a bit more pace too. It’s like riding a bike, all you need is some practice and you will be zooming along, I’ve learned this by watching RUclips tutorials, so I hope this helps.

This is my first canoe so I don’t have anything else to compare it to. I still think it’s pretty heavy lol. It’s 40lbs so not too easy for me to portage although I can do it. It is not made for big water that’s for sure, but I can appreciate it for a first canoe…
19:24 A partridge can make a thumping sound. I would expect it in fall though, and you'll hear the thumps increasing in frequency for a duration of like 8 seconds.

As a hiker/camper myself, find ways to ease fire-starting vs. the strike method, especially in high-wind areas. The best way to get past that is to soak cotton balls in petroleum jelly. They light very easily with a match or torch lighter, and stays lit. It's very low weight, too. Also, pack as much Birchwood bark 14:08 as you can in your pack, for emergency purposes. Great job so far. Also, look for ways to lower your base weight, ie, food, clothes, etc.
I am definitely going to start with the cotton balls soaked in petroleum jelly. A couple people have recommended it and I seem to always have a bit of a struggle with the fire. I am really trying to reduce the weight and number of items I carry in my pack but there are a few things I’m having a hard time giving up. I will have to get it figured out for future trips. The thumping..bigfoot or ruffed grouse, u will know a ruffed grouse they hold still ubtil u almost step on them then fly up in ur face as do woodcocks. Please invest in a quality pair of hiking boots , Merrell is a good brand, that grub u filmed is great bait, nice trip take care
Hopefully not big foot 😂😂😂 it was a ruffed grouse. I ended up looking it up. I’ll have to watch out for them flying up that way because that would be terrifying! I do have winter hiking boots by Oboz that I like but the Solomon shoes I usually wear are water/hiking shoes so they dry out quickly! Thank you ☺️ you take care too

13:37 put some wet wood close to the fire to dry out. Also if you need to, locate a fallen pine tree. Then onto the roots. Cut off some roots. The pine resin gathers in the roots of a fallen pine and solidifies there. You’ll notice it’s all reasony at the roots cross section. Take a blade and scrape that hard resin and make a pile. It will burn even when wet because it’s not water soluble. Use this to dry your kindling and so on. Hope that helps you 😊

As a Michigander I really enjoy camping as well. I went up to a nice area near Petoskey last year and it was great. However since you're camping alone please be careful. It's best to have extra phone chargers, self defense devices, and a first aid kit for sure.

You are an attractive young lady. While the areas you are in a usually very very safe, there isn't much law enforcement either. Please consider getting a CPL and at least some basic training to follow it up. Even if you have someone else with you that we don't see. Please consider it and stay safe.

I was scared watching it. So was she. She packed up and left immediately. However she was also prepared with her firearms and she was well trained as her father was a marine corp vet. Just saying. That gust of wind that caught you by surprise is a very good example, (though you probably would've been fine then seeing that you were basically on shore). But just a good reminder that the unexpected is exactly that- unexpected. Better safe than sorry!

You are a gutsy lady doing all this solo and learning along the way. That being said, mother nature is not in the least forgiving and does care about you. Your level of experience is low, so one small misfortune or bad move you probably will be ok. But things tend to occur in clumps. It is when the problems pile up and the unexpected happens people don't come home. So please be careful, work on your skillsets and listen to the wisdom of those who have been there and have done it.

I wasn't going to say anything but from 30:55 , I recommend bringing a pew-pew along in a floating dry-bag. In case of venomous snakes, etc, I also carry a Zoleo, which has a "medical advice" option for texting via satellite as well as the SOS button for venom, etc.
Ohh I didn’t realize Zoleo has a medical advice option. That seems pretty useful. I have a garmin InReach Messenger and I was debating between the two when I bought it
If it helps on dealing with wind and wave...have a foam pad so you can drop down to your knees and brace you backside against the seat...this will lower you weight ...connects you with the canoe so you can move with it instead of perched on top. I also recommend taking your canoe to a safe place and just practice falling out of it and safely getting back in...its important to know when it will roll and what it feels like...and what to do when it happens. Your camp meals are very impressive. Enjoying your vides ....thanks!
Thank you for these suggestions! I was thinking about cutting a closed foam sleeping pad I have to a smaller size and using that. Someone else also suggested practicing falling out and I think it is such great advice. I will definite do that. Thank you soo much!
If the thumping sound you heard was a repeating thumping sound that gets faster and faster then slows down before stopping, it is likely a male grouse trying to attract some ladies.

As a Michigan native, it is enjoyable and remind me of boy scouting in the Lower Peninsula. You do a great job showing how to canoe camp and all the fun and issues you get. A very nice video. It would benefit you to watch some bushcraft/outdoor survival videos and learn what to do in any situation. It pays to have a good pocket knife and a decent survival knife with you as well as multiple fire starting options such as a lighter, matches, Ferro rod, etc. Anyhow, I won't preach atcha. 😂 Thanks for bringing us along on your adventure. 🌳⛺🪵🔥🐟😊

Supernice video :). Quick tip: When the water is getting a bit choppy, try crossing your feet under your seat. This gives you much more stability in the canoe, by being able to push your knees out to the sides.

Haha I’ve been trying so hard to pare down but I realized I just am not a minimalist camper. One of the reasons I love canoe camping and I struggle with backpacking lol…thank you so much 😊
@@Apeaceofthewoods When I canoe I wear one life vest and put another one in the bottom of the canoe to cushion my knees. Plus if you go over you have extra flotation to save yourself or some gear. Plus a life vest can keep body heat from escaping in cold weather or cold water. Flotation is excellent insulation to wear under wet clothes or in a survival shelter.

We've been going there for a while now. 7-10 days at a time, eat fish everyday. If for some reason we don't catch enough or don't feel like eating fish, we have rations. Instant coffee, oatmeal, potatoes, noodles and such. It's about a 8 or 9 hour drive for us. We like Big Island camp spot but Townline is flatter and more open to sky viewing at night. We usually go in September, no bugs! I just skimmed through your video, so forgive me if you mentioned any of this.

It may have been mentioned in the other comments, but the “thumping” you heard was likely a Ruffed Grouse drumming. A quick RUclips search will show you what it looks like. The sound can really carry through the forest.
I ended up googling it afterwards because it was happening non stop. I didn’t imagine that sound coming from a bird!

I enjoyed this vid and subbed your channel. I watch all the content makers who do this sort of thing. I have been going to places like this a long time and i still get that stressed feeling over weather, animals etc, but it what we do for our fun. It's all worth it when you catch a nice fish or hear the symphony of birds. There are a lot of swainson's thrushes in there too, and barred owls at night to add to the sound. First time i heard a grouse drumming when i was a kid I thought it was man-made. Take care

But the rewards are so worth it like you said. There is nothing that compares to the peace you get being out in a remote place in nature.

Also ..a little tip. When you can't get that wood going...make a teepee with the sticks leaving a opening on one side ...slide the stove in there and you will have your fire in no time at all...then slide the stove out . Remember bear spray and a rope to hang you food from tree and don't leave anything like food ,tooth paste etc. in camp.

Hi little lady it's Tony I totally commend you with your solo camping I'm the same way I would like to suggest that you take pool noodles and put it on your canoe so it doesn't mess up your new car and also put the pool noodles on your tripod so if you should go over it with the canoe you don't lose your camera and you can use zip ties I had mentioned to you in the past that I have done lots of camping usually if wood is wet it's weird on the outside so if you peel that off the inside is dry to get the fire going and then you put the wet next to it so it dries out I don't know where your camping but if there's bears in the area or even mountain lions do not keep your food next to you put it up in a tree I use a plastic bag and a nylon bag to hold the plastic one and I have like a 50 ft rope that I throw over the limb keep it at least 10 ft Plus off the ground do not keep food in your tent or on you hey here's another thought why don't you get kayak paddles I would like to wish you the best be safe and I'll see you in the next video may God bless you
Hey Tony!! Thank you again for the advice. I actually did get a kayak paddle ☺️ haha my old car was so scratched up from my canoe I’m shocked I was able to trade it in. Hoping to not do the same to this one. I’ve been a lot more careful. I also started using a GoPro in the canoe in case of an unfortunate overboard situation lol. Never thought about using pool noodles to secure it. You’re full of ideas! And yes, absolutely agree when it comes to the bear safety! ☺️☺️☺️
Glad you found the campsite. When in a remote place like that it's best to stick to a known area. That one windey spot was probably a place whre the existing winds funneled into a wind shear to beat you up a bit. And you just can't go wrong with hotdogs. BTW, has anyone ever told you that you resemble a younger prettier version of Donna Summer? Maybe you could sing She works hard for the money. That would be appropriate for how hard you work to accomplish your adventures. Be safe.

Awesome video! You can get that hook out of the rope with pliers..just use the pliers to crimp down the barb on the hook and wiggle back out the way it went in. The barb is the pointy thing near the hook point. I always carry a couple pair of pliers fishing for getting hooks out of fish etc. the good ones have where you can cut the extra line after tying on a lure…
I just got some new pliers but I don’t think they can clip the extra line so maybe they aren’t that good. I brought finger nail clippers lol. Thank you for the advice ☺️
I'm enjoying watching your videos this is truly amazing and the food looks great not many people know how to cook on a open fire .you really seem to enjoy the outdoors camping and the way you handle the canoe its not your first ride its really nice. I live in the deep southern United States summer time is not the time to camp here way to hot spring and fall are wonderful though.I just wanted to say be careful out there and have fun you really seem like someone to hang out with camping and all but most of all be careful the world needs more people like yourself.

Great location ,, maybe a multi-day outing at some time and get to explore the other lakes .... with more outings you will develop more confidence .. as other comments have mentioned ,, work on the J-stroke , constant swapping side can get exhausting ,, and carry a double paddle as a second ..... when confronted with wind swells to white caps ,, never get yourself with waves onto your sides , uncomfortable stability and chance of getting flipped ... on rough waters paddle into 1/4 angles ( zig-zag) ,, a little more effort but not likely to turn over ... plus have all your packs & gear tethered to a thwart just in case so you won't lose any ...
.. WOW!! that roast beef pot looked awesome .. and agree , when canoe camping ,a few comfort items like a cot to help get better sleep ,,are not much of an issue .. Stay Safe ..
You are 💯 I am feeling more confident with each trip…although I still have a ways to go. I have carried a second double paddle from the start…mostly as a backup in case I lost the single paddle. I now tend to use the double paddle more because of what you described above…at least until I can become more proficient with the J stroke. The zig zag concept you explained makes sense! Thank you! I did hear that I should not travel with waves coming from my side but now that you’ve explained it I understand how to do that while continuing in the direction I need to.
I may unfortunately have to ditch the cot if I’m going to be able to handle a true canoe trip with portages. Thank you! And thank you so much for all of your advice ☺️

A decent fixed blade knife in your pack will allow you to split down some of the wood that you found to the sizes that you need. You may consider adding this to your pack in the future. I know you have mentioned Alexis outdoors videos and she has a ton where she is processing wood for firewood. It does not have to be a huge knife to do this effectively there are a ton available with around a 4” blade that would do a superb job.
Thank you! I do have a fixed blade knife but haven’t mastered the skill of batoning wood as of yet. I have seen Alexis Outdoors process wood like a pro and hopefully in time will get there 😊😊

i love your enduring sprit. i watched your other 2 videos first and i would like to suggest a piece of equipment if your going to play in the UP. its a big place and if your walking in the wrong direction your can go for a long ways without seeing anybody. so all that said, if you dont have one of these you should very much consider getting one. this model is my personal favorite Garmin eTrex Legend its an older model but very user friendly. i like my slightly newer color screen one best its the Legend Cx (it seems to have a little more power and picks up more satellites).

@@Apeaceofthewoods So a couple things about the differences in the two. Here is my disclaimer, all I know about the In-Reach is the quick overview of what it does on the Garmin website aka: you quite possibly know more about what it does that I do.
From what I see the In-Reach is a “Communication device with a side of “this is where I am” the Legend is strictly a “this is where I am” device. The Legend needs no subscription, put in two AA batteries turn it on and it works (I’ve had the batteries last for several days depending on use). The “Track” function makes a trail on the screen of where you’ve traveled and can be zoomed in/out. The “Mark” feature lets you “drop a pin” where you are (say your campsite) then you can use the “GoTo” to get back to that spot. You can also use Google Earth to find a spot you would like to see/visit, put the GPS coordinates in the Legend and GoTo that spot using the “Bearing” reading on the Legend. In a nutshell that’s the biggest difference I see. The In-Reach seems (note disclaimer) to be a “Help im lost” kinda thing where as the Legend will get you out on your own. Not saying the Reach isn’t a good device to have it is but, as a “Boomer” there's just not a lot of stuff on it I personally would use.

I've had the etrex 35t for navigation and the mini for safety. Sold them both to buy the inreach 66i. It does both functions. The Garmin software absolutely sacks but it does work. One device is so m7ch easier. The new 67i is supposed to have better software.... check the RUclips reviews/comparisons.
I use a much less expensive Canadian brand called Zolio. Yes, in order to text, you need a cell phone, but you can use it by itself if you only want to send interval “breadcrumb” gps checkins to whomever. Works great for me so far. I don’t hike a lot, so I only keep the svc enabled when I go
Big Isle wilderness and Sylvania wilderness were some of my favorites to camp, this type of camping is sorta like my happy place, I only wish I had cooking skills like you, and I died laughing when you said “people monsters that’ll eat you”, that killed me! I like how you include all the little mishaps on your trips, it’s very relatable, also you’re a very likable person and can see your channel growing, if you choose to, so I hope you continue to get out any chance you get, and don’t get eaten by people monsters!👍
Me too! I love BILW and canoe camping has become my favorite style of camping. Haha it does come with a lot of mishaps since I’m just getting started. Omg have you watched that show?? I just want to add one more thing, maybe you already know about the J stroke, but incase you haven’t, the J stroke is a paddling technique that allows you to paddle on just one side of your canoe, it’s more efficient compared to the constant flipping of the paddle to your left and right, it’s simple to learn, and when done correctly your canoe will stay more straight and move with a bit more pace too. It’s like riding a bike, all you need is some practice and you will be zooming along, I’ve learned this by watching RUclips tutorials, so I hope this helps.

I'm sure that's a great canoe for portages, but wow it is narrow, and that seat being that high up I'd be tippin over for sure.
This is my first canoe so I don’t have anything else to compare it to. I still think it’s pretty heavy lol. It’s 40lbs so not too easy for me to portage although I can do it. It is not made for big water that’s for sure, but I can appreciate it for a first canoe…
19:24 A partridge can make a thumping sound. I would expect it in fall though, and you'll hear the thumps increasing in frequency for a duration of like 8 seconds.
That was exactly that sound! I looked it up because I thought it was so weird and found out that it was a partridge. I’ve been hearing them on pretty much every trip since this one

Get yourself a kayak paddle, its not traditional but its much easier! Plus you don't get as wet!
I do have one and I get around a lot quicker with it! I’ll be using it until I can figure out this J stroke lol
As a hiker/camper myself, find ways to ease fire-starting vs. the strike method, especially in high-wind areas. The best way to get past that is to soak cotton balls in petroleum jelly. They light very easily with a match or torch lighter, and stays lit. It's very low weight, too. Also, pack as much Birchwood bark 14:08 as you can in your pack, for emergency purposes. Great job so far. Also, look for ways to lower your base weight, ie, food, clothes, etc.
Also, if you are concerned about ticks & mosquitos, research permethrin for clothes and gear, which kills both on contact.
I am definitely going to start with the cotton balls soaked in petroleum jelly. A couple people have recommended it and I seem to always have a bit of a struggle with the fire. I am really trying to reduce the weight and number of items I carry in my pack but there are a few things I’m having a hard time giving up. I will have to get it figured out for future trips. I do treat my clothing and gear with permethrin. The sawyer brand is pretty expensive so I’m looking for a better option. Thank you so much for all of the advice 😊😊😊

You are extremely brave 😊 I have to admit that I was terrified and hardly slept through the night on my first few camping trips…I do realize most of the fears I have are psychological and unlikely to actually happen irl and have slowly become more comfortable in the woods

The thumping..bigfoot or ruffed grouse, u will know a ruffed grouse they hold still ubtil u almost step on them then fly up in ur face as do woodcocks. Please invest in a quality pair of hiking boots , Merrell is a good brand, that grub u filmed is great bait, nice trip take care
Hopefully not big foot 😂😂😂 it was a ruffed grouse. I ended up looking it up. I’ll have to watch out for them flying up that way because that would be terrifying! I do have winter hiking boots by Oboz that I like but the Solomon shoes I usually wear are water/hiking shoes so they dry out quickly! Thank you ☺️ you take care too
