Wouldn't that purple gas be dangerous if someone say did this indoors also what if you mixed iodine in water and add that to the aluminum would that be better or worse for this experiment.
I think it gets up into the thousand degree level because of the very high reactivity of aluminum metal towards elemental iodine which is highly exothermic

Max Jacko the iodine is readily available on ebay as is the Al powder. Many different mesh sizes of Al can be found. Finer mesh works better

Lego & Entertainment need to look it up under elemental iodine. I got mine from China via Ebay. Its commonly used in making antiseptic solutions.

Usually, it is done by inhaling it. If you smell cheese its bad quality. Bit ifbyou smell honey, its superior quality.
