Alfa Romeo RZ review! The Alfa Romeo SZ and RZ are two of the strangest sports cars of the 1990s. Today I'm reviewing the Alfa RZ (the convertible version of the Alfa SZ) and I'll show you the quirks and features of the Alfa RZ/SZ. I'm also going to drive the Alfa Romeo RZ and show you what it's like behind the wheel of this odd car.

I actually have an SZ coupe for the last 21 years. The reason the hot and cold heating controls are separate is that the cold does the AC. On a rainy day the windscreen mists up instantly, so you need the air conditioning on to suck the moisture out of the air, but some heat to keep you warm! BTW the SZ is way better looking IMO. Strangely the SZ and RZ shared almost no body panels in common. The SZ bonnet has fake vents on it, where the RZ is smooth, the front bumper is much lower to the ground, as are the side sills, and the RZ windscreen is smaller. @Doug DeMuro was wrong about the red / green shock buttons too - they are for the ride hight lift system - probably one of the first cars to have it, but essential on an SZ due to the ground clearance. It lifts all 4 corners and can be done whilst driving at any speed.
Agreed. Doug apparently never grew up in 80s and 90s cars where you would turn up the heat and punch the Aircon to max to quickly defog the windshield. I guess it never gets foggy in California?
The SZ and RZ were definitely prettier in their original design than in their execution. However, it also doesn't photograph well. You know that gorgeous girl you met once, and tried to take a photo of her, and they all came out wrong? That the SZ/RZ. The only way you can take a nice picture of the car, is by using a 50mmm human eye equivalent lens. Anything else, and it just bombs it.
Man I am so jealous of you. I would LOVE to own an SZ
I also think that SZ looks waaaay better than RZ. One of my dream cars (alongside 2007 8C Competizione Coupé)
Yeah he got the suspension wrong it's a raise and lower. I definitely think the coupe was the better looking car. I had an Alfa 146 which being a saloon was quite conventional but the 145 hatch had that same line running down the side. Hasn't aged well but was something different at the time for sure. The SZ is definitely in my dream garage

@@grtbgf Maybe because GM is all about failures. Currently it's planned to restart the brand in some way.
I like Doug's videos, but it saddens me that he doesn't do enough homework beforehand.
The SZ/RZ was based on the Type 116 ALFETTA floor pan, a platform that existed from 1972 with the introduction of the Alfetta Sedan, until 1993 when production of the derived 75/Milano ceased. NO MENTION WHATSOEVER of the genial 50/50 weight distribution of this chassis with the rear Transaxle layout, the rear De-Dion suspension system which was perfected by alfa for this car with self-adjusting hydraulic shocks, the rear in-board brakes and composite materials used for the bodywork in this car when mostly top-end exotics had them. It's really too bad, ranting on so much about this car and not mentioning ANYTHING of the above, of a car that was considered at the time a sort of mini-super-car, bad looks or not.
Doug is clueless.
That's because that's not what Doug does. He doesn't ever go in-depth on chassis analysis.
for Doug EVERYTHING that on a car si different from a Honda Civic, is unbelievably weird.

I've owned one for 21 years and I think it's a fantastic car, definitely the most "tailor-made" to drive besides all the cars I've owned/driven.
At the time I was about to wear a black RZ, then I chose the SZ because it represented the original idea of the project.
I am totally satisfied, I will never sell it; I will share it with my son, who is 14 and is already waiting for the moment 😉
Okay, I love you Doug, but I feel the point of this car is kinda missed. Also, it was mostly designed by the Fiat department, not the Alfa department, to make it even weirder. First, the SZ and RZ are based on the GTV6 platform. Same platform the 75/Milano V6 was based on eventually. This platform is revered for its genius handling, engine, weight distribution, and passionate driving character. That platform went on to win many races across touring and rally cars. Even today, you go to the Neurenberg Ring in Germany, one of the preferred cars to race there is the 75. The reason nobody talks about the SZ and RZ's great driving and handling is because, well, that is because the GTV6 and 75 were already famous for it, so why talk about a given?
The SZ/RZ were a promotional vehicle, as brands often do, with a high price markup, intended to provide 'attention' to the brand. Just as is done with making small production run homogenized racing cars. It was never intended to be a 'serious' production model. More like a prototype in a limited production run, using an existing platform. And this shows. It was intended to be a bit of a showpiece, which improved and extended on the handling of the GTV6 in a unique and exclusive 'extra' model. That's also why it's made out of plastic instead of metal, to save weight. Also, not very successful, and the body part fitting is, because of this, awful. It's also the reason a lot of the other features on the car are what they are. It's basically a retrofit of an existing platform, purely meant for driving pleasure. Its target audience was people that would take it to the track every now and then. Or at least, use the (italian) roads that way.
But, it did what it was intended to do, the SZ and RZ are a blast to drive. Just like the GTV6 is, but even lighter (the GTV6 is already pretty light).
When you see the design drawings of the car, it actually looks pretty neat. I wouldn't say pretty, but cool and agressive, like an attack dog. But because they used plastic as a body material, the edges were all rounded off, completely botching that razor sharp look, into a like a fisher-price toy car bulky mess. So yes, now agreed entirely on par that the car seems to have been the result of a drunken design bet by the design team, and somehow the intern won.
From the origin design , you can see clear styling cues there originating from Giugiaro, with the Delorean and the '80s, VW Sirocco, and taking the 'truncated butt' style to the max (which was an aerodynamics feature at the time), but it all comes together very oddly with that plastic.
But it did stand out. And it does go like stink around corners. Like most Alfa's, that genius platform works magic when you are through windy roads or on the track. Long straight roads with traffic lights? Not going to shine there.
Experience? Driving a GTV6 from NY to San Francisco and back. Much better at home in the hilly curvy roads of Tuscany.
Wow! I always learn something here! Well done, Tom!
ruclips.net/video/9j3K6ctySyU/видео.html >vere in action
To tell the truth, the founding idea of the design is the work of Robert Opron (the father of Citroën Maserati).
The car was a concentrate of experimental and record ideas.
For example the shorter time from deliberation to production (the tests were conducted by making Alfa 75 imsa compete and win in the Giro d'Italia, which were actually SZ in disguise), the body was not a symple plastic body, but in MODAR, a material that, contrary to glass fiber, could be printed with variable thickness.
The headlights were experimental Carello (and the nose today gave rise to the Tonale), many elements (for example the wing) were in carbon fiber (!).
At 250 km / h the car is completely neutral and can be driven with 2 fingers.
It is a car t o t a l l y o r i e n t e d towards the driver and his driving pleasure

I think it is less you like the design and more you are just attracted to unusual looking cars that would make you stand out. There are plenty of people like that.
Doug, you’re missing a couple of vital bits of history on this car. Firstly it is based on the 75 or Milano as it was called in the USA. At the time it was designed in the ‘80’s, it was one of the quickest realisations of design to production and used composite materials that were not widely available at the time, especially in it’s class. Also in the UK at least, there was a specialist that took the Busso engine out to 3.5 litres and produced the car that Alfa always should have. I was lucky enough to work with them on the conversion of one to right hand drive, possibly the only one ever done. They all featured a De Dion transaxle with the gearbox over the back axle and inboard brakes, much like the 75/Milano, but they had coil-over dampers at the front rather than torsion bars, like the DTM touring cars. If you drove the 3.5 you would have a different opinion of this car, as with more power it was fabulous. When set up right and under hard acceleration, these had so much traction that virtually nothing could leave the line as quick, without 4 wheel drive.
Bravo.
Thank you
@@studiocalder818 You clearly know your cars :-) I have had many Alfas, but my favourite by far was the 75 Veloce, which had similar modifications to an SZ, it was a true drivers car.

Hey I have been researching Alfa in general and I found out that the trunk area is supposed to be behind the front seats, that’s why the center piece with the speaker folds to give you access, fun fact the SZ had no way to access the huge trunk but the front seats
Or you can access it through the top lid with the roof up. Looks like there's tons of storage in that area with the roof up
Doug throughout the video : Ugly car
Me at every single angle : BELLISSIMO! 🤌🤌🤌🤌
I can't be alone in thinking this looks more interesting and more like a design statement, than basically almost every model of car for sale today at a similar price point.
As far as I can recall, you are exactly right, that is what it was intended to be. A limited production halo car. A styling focused concept car for the road. In my eyes, it takes the blocky, brutal-ish styling of the early 1980s cars such as the Audi coupe quattro and turns it up to 11. You like square fender flares?, Well here is an entire car as a square fender flare! You like 2 smallish-rectangular headlights? Here is 3 of them!
This had so much potential, but it's like a bunch of prototypes merged together and sold
The headlights and some other details are so good but why tf is this car so squary and tall it's supposed to be a convertible coupe
With softer lines and a lower body this would be nuts
1990's Alfa Romeo; "You guys want a car?"
People; "Err bit of a weird question, but, yes?!"

I honestly think the coupe version of this car looks fantastic and I would love the own one... of course not as a main, daily driver that is.
The RZ feels like a concept car that accidentally got sold to the public.
Exactly. Love your picture by the way
Not accidentally, but on purpose. SZ, from which this convertible comes from, was an actual prototype they decided to put into production. And most of the solutions for the car were way ahead for the time and were later on adopted by other constructors.

Nah I can confirm, it’s an horrendous monstrosity, not what you would typically expect from Alfa and Zagato.
I like it! It looks like a "Concept Car" come to life! Usually you only see something like this at a car show! Kudos to Alfa for actually making these available to the public!
It started within Alfa Romeo as project ES30 for ‘experimental sport’ so it’s really a concept car that made production

I personally think Doug is being a bit harsh on the looks. To me the SZ and (to a lesser extent) the RZ are brutalist design statements, with road presence unlike any other car. You really have to see one to appreciate them, as they don't seem to photograph well. With only around 1000 SZs and 250 RZs ever made, the likelihood of that is relatively slim.
I mean he's right tho, alfas tend to be beautiful and eye catching but this one is eye catching in all the wrong ways. It looks like a cube and a wedge hybrid that objectively is quite ugly.

The "cold" dial is "intensity of the air conditioning compressor". Most vehicles let you have the AC compressor on with heat (to defog/defrost windows, for example.) But most cars only have "AC compressor on or off", a few have "Normal AC or MAX AC". This is the only vehicle I've ever seen that lets you dial in the PRECISE amount of AC compressor you want.
So yeah, heat+cold at max would mean "give me hot dehumidified air".
But isn't max heat + max cold what you want to defrost the windows? That's not what the drawing says

I only ever put the AC slider in either "full on" or "full off" (didn't help that by the time I owned it, it was ~20 years old and the AC just *BARELY* worked on "full on".)
Doug, the designer of this car was the same french guy who designed the quirky Citroen cx you reviewed, so that explains aaa loot...
Growing up in the Bronx in the 90s, there was one of these parked near my apartment building. I have no idea how it got imported or who drove it. But it was always a treat to walk past it.
"Modern Cars... they all look like an electric shaver" - Marv from sin city.
I’ve been randomly thinking of this quote over the past few weeks. Weird lol
‘Electric shaver’ 😂🤣 so true!
Maria "Josepe, itsa raining! Putta the roof back uppa!"
Josepe, "Statazit, statazit!! I gotta pull over!"
He pulls over, has to get out, hit the move the seat forward, hit the button, open the rear and go through all the steps whilst they get soaked by the downpour.
...and then, once the roof is finally up, its stopped raining!
🗣🤌🤌
That was pretty funny.
Giuseppe not Josepe
I can't see what you're on about, it's a perfectly logical and sensible top mechanism
Dougs hand gestures violently shaking the car and door made my day
the entire video^^^^^^^^
Did I hear "Turkey in the Straw" playing during the driving part? Doug must've passed an ice cream truck!
The partypiece of the SZ Coupé was the cornering speed, they claimed that they created enough downforce and that that enabled the car to build up to 1.3G and if that would be true it would have been phenomenal in the 1990's and would have beaten any supercar in cornering speed back then!
Alfa specs : 1.1 G lateral, measured at 1.4 G by some drivers.
But it's a walk in the park for a Citroën Xantia Activa :

Doug: "The roof takes like 2 and a half minutes to put up or down!"
Also Doug: **Talks about the roof process for 5 minutes**
That's why I'm here haha 🌈
I'm actually tired of this. :( Saw every single video of him since the day one maybe that's why. He's getting douger I guess.
Well how would you operate the roof without understanding how it works? Like...
When I saw Doug open the center console/speaker mount I thought, interesting storage space. As for the overall looks of the car, I actually like it, and the coupe as well. Most 90s cars were ugly and too similar to each other and this one definitely stood out.
When everything else from that era starts to look obsolete, this still looks good.
The coupe is gorgeous damn.
You miss a quirk, the fuel filler: The cover isn’t locked and piece of leather flap integrated to protect the bodywork while filling the car.
common on old 911 Porsches..... no quirk, call it engineering at it´s best!
Most Italian cars from this era were like this, but it is indeed quirky I agree.

This is the first evidence that Doug is a human being

I know the day I saw the SC and the RC for the first time. I saw 12 of them on a italian day on Zandvoort the Netherlands, I loved these weird cars 💪💪
This sir is like an Italian Salvador Dali. Some will understand, some will not. But it's a work of art for its period with a lot of flair and style and thought.
Gotta disagree re: the coupe version. I think it's very cool.
Doug missed a coupe version which was parked on the street in London near Victoria station when he was there.
Me too
I agree with you guys, boy is Doug like this car is fugly aha. I really like the design.
They were stuck in the 80's Doug. That center arm rest folds down to reveal a perfect stainless steel booger sugar tray. Maybe the best design feature.
You can tell Doug wasn't one of the cooler kids in highschool
This used to be my No.1 fav Matchbox (/Majorette) to drive around the carpet back in the 90's ❤ :)
Yes it is weird and I also like it. Glad you were able to find one in the US to review. Thank you Doug.
Really doesn't look that bad and definitely gets points for being unique
Its really grown on me over the years!
facts i kinda like it 😂😂
I acknowledge that there seem to be some tricky angles and especially that there is something kind of laughable about this roadster's installed roof. In its standard version, however, there is a strange wholesomeness where the microwaved toy car appearance also becomes kind of menacing!
The crypt0 market has been unstable.
People ask themselves now which coin to

before jumping into conclusion i think you
should take a look at things first. BTC price fall
means analysts remain divided over whether
it is entering a bear market or is just suffering
a brief correction on the road to more record

profit despite the recent price crash and they
also earn by trading. I'm still a hodler but still

Yes, "Quake", we know you have an opinion.
Doug's the type of guy that wears his name tag after work.
Undo the latches before you get out to put the top down and then there is no reason to go from side to side of the car. It's actually a simple procedure, that you happened to complicate.
I was getting anoyed at that as well. I am sure a dedicated owner does the whole process in far less then a minute. Possible at any red-light.
I visited Milan recently and these were really popular in car meets, so lucky to have seen them in abundance

There was one close to my home growing up, I had no idea what it was, but I was fascinated by it. Years latter I found out how rare the car was.
Agreed, it's VERY cool, I especially LOVE the front, and at the back, the bar light styling is futuristic and classic at the same time, only Porsche 911 did it better.
what about the Citroen C6 that you hosted on the Cars and Bids promo- I have been waiting for this car to be reviewed for so long, I really hope that it’s video is on the way :)

Fun stupid fact : The first generation "new" mini has its seat folding lever and lumbar controls on the inside as well.
