I also thought the way the mother-daughter relationship was portrayed in this movie was fantastic. A lot of it felt familiar and reminiscnet of my own relationship with my mother. Toxic, intimate, and confusing all at once. Really fascinating.

I really loved how three dimensional the characters were. They weren’t ones you could 100% love or 100% hate. One second you’re feeling bad for them but the next you’re aggravated with them. Everyone just had such a complex character with very real motivations and flaws.

its just like people are in real life, we do bad things and good things. we're multidimensional characters and every day we evolve and as time goes by we change and so do the people around us, we discover new things everyday and tackle new obstacles. it feels very real and raw

I actually went to the all guy school referenced in the film. What I wished a lot of people could appreciate was how many inside jokes Greta Gerwig wrote into the film specifically for Sacramento natives. The coach being the play director was so painfully on point

I agree - adored this movie. The characters felt so real and so fleshed out. Like we were just seeing snapshots of people living their real lives. Definitely a special movie, can't wait to see what the director sends us next!
What really stood out to me was just how silly Ladybird and Julie were together. I think some movies tend to paint high school as this huge drama, but all my memories of high school just involve me being super weird and goofy with my friends.

This is a movie about a young woman growing up. It works so well because the characters are flawed, damaged and real. The plot is unpredictable, and there's nothing contrived about this story. Nothing. Because this is a period piece, there is another layer of novelty that Gen X'ers will appreciate, but everyone should find something lovable about this work of art. I'm going to see it again. Thanks for your review. Keep up the good work.

I watched this last night. Throughout the movie I found Christine/ Lady Bird to be a very selfish character. I hated her interactions towards julie. And at one point I didnt wanna watch. But one thing I was waiting for was christine's lesson. I wanted her to learn something, and I found the ending so profound. The lesson was quiet, but i loved that Christine learned to be humble and communicate.

i mean i didnt mind that, because like....teenagers Be Like That. but i was just like that to my mother growing up, because i didnt have any perspective for how hard motherhood is or how, like...anything works, but after a couple years of adulthood, i cringe at the way i used to act and treat her differently now
honestly, it would have been worse for me if lady bird suddenly has this growth and “turning point,” since thats would have been disingenuous to lady bird’s character & the tone of how the movie handles realism

honestly i loved how quick and non drawn out some parts were because that's what they feel like as a normal teenager. going through a breakup is just going to be a small bit of your life that is kept with a small memory. you're not going to remember every day at school or every interaction with your friends. school dances aren't going to be memorable. unless something tremendously important or tragic happens, youre not going to remember any of it. 70% of the things that happened freshman year are already gone from my mind.

I really love how honest and raw the relationships within the film were, which was the main thing I took away from it. Especially with Lady Bird and her mother. Often in movies you get one extreme or another - a really loving and supportive mum or a domineering, controlling one. The relationship between Lady Bird and her mother was intensely complicated which is so much more realistic and I loved seeing an honest portrayal for once.

  • @entertain7us148

What I loved soooo much about this movie was that it actually felt real. Usually I hate 'coming of age films', because usually the characters are unlikeable, and they don't act like real teenagers, but rather like how adults expect teenagers to act. Lady Bird's characters all reminded me of people and experiences I'd had throughout my life, and it just felt wonderful, as a teenager, to finally see a movie that didn't condescend to either age group, but rather just took a very simple storyline that almost every teenager can identify with and make it authentic. It didn't treat the adults like judgmental idiots, and it didn't treat the kids like self-absorbed, sexually obsessed assholes. In fact, Lady Bird's selfishness and her recognition of that was a major arc for her.
The last part of the movie with the mother dropping her daughter off at the airport without saying goodbye perfectly exemplifies the qualities about the film that struck such an emotional cord with me - they're not overly bombastic, dramatic situations. They're everyday stories about real people that i could 100% identify with. It was just so immersive.

Beanie Feldstein is in "Hello, Dolly!" on Broadway right now. And she got the role because the producers saw the dailies for "Lady Bird" and thought she would be perfect for the role. She's also best friends with Ben Platt, they went to high school together (they went to the prom together). And she's Jonah Hill's sister.
One of the most affecting scenes in the movie is Danny and Lady Bird's last scene in the back of the coffee shop.

I don't really know how to feel about this movie. Going into it I thought it was something I was going to enjoy due to the aesthetics but then I actually watched it and something just felt off. The visuals still resonated with me but I almost didn't make it through the entire film. I found myself being bored and almost annoyed. Lady Bird, to me, was a really unlikable character and I don't know whether this is because of how she was written or if it was due to Saoirse's perfomance (that being said, I don't think she's a bad actress at all, I just didn't like this particular character). Well, having the main character annoy you doesn't really help keep you interested in watching the movie. I also wasn't really interested in the plot. As a matter of fact, if you'd asked me what it was about before I watched the video, I wouldn't be able to tell you. Nothing about this movie captured or resonated with me, which made it pretty painful for me to watch. Maybe I just wasn't in the mood the day I watched it and I should probably give it another chance, seeing how well it is perceived, but so far I just don't get the hype. (Also, I think it comes off as kind of pretentious, which is a shame.)

The opposite happens when you actually relate to the characters. So the movie, instead of boring, it becomes kinda emotional and self reflecting and you can see that the way Greta portrayed the relationships between Lady Bird as a growing up teenager and the other different characters is so accurate (maybe exagerated at times but accurate).

Saida Khaffou but the characters were so blank to me that I couldn’t connect to them at all. Yes I could relate and I could connect characters to my own family members but my family members actually had dimension and the characters in Lady Bird didn’t in my opinion. The mom was the most dimensional character and the best character and all the others seemed like they were given one personality trait and their entire dialogue was devoted to one trait

My mother and I have always been two very different people. My mom has a lot of issues and can be very, idk toxic? narcissistic? idk.
And so, as I grew up, i always felt so jealous of mother daughter relationships i saw. I felt left out and even more hurt after watching Gilmore Girls, a show all about a mother and daughter relationship that is so close emotionally and extremely healthy.
So when I saw this movie, about a girl in poverty like me, who wanted to go somewhere different with classical culture, whose mother and her were always at odds,
i was enamored with the movie and still am.
It made me feel a lot better about my relationship with my mother, not that my mother’s behavior is okay or anything, but that others get it. They get the flip flop behavior, the great one second, war the next. They get that. Which is something all coming of age media has failed to really give me with the same reality in other senses.
And I am just so very thankful for that.

This is one of my new favorite movies. I was an immigrant boy who graduated from a suburban high school in 2001 and, damn, did this movie just get things pitch-perfect about life in high school in the late 1990s/early 2000s. The low-level sadness, the family drama, the music, just the feeling of it all. The petty humiliations that attend all the "big" things that happen during that period in your life. That scene where she lost her virginity--my first time was just as has cringey and disappointing as what Lady Bird had to suffer through. My prom, not nearly as awful, but still filled with all this stupid drama. By the end of the movie, I was genuinely tearful. It was such a great movie. And the director's love for her hometown of Sacramento--damn, did that come through so well!

yes!! i agree with everything you said, and what i mostly enjoyed about the film is the fact that its to human you know? the characters are clearly not perfect and we see them developing with time and experiences i just love that so much, and the relationships they portray them so well and also the struggles everyone can relate

A few years late but I enjoyed this film a lot. My only issue is that I didn’t really connect with the characters as much as a lot of other people and maybe the comedy wasn’t my thing but that’s the only thing holding this film back for being a masterpiece in my eyes. The whole cast is brilliant and Metcalf stole the show.

Sacramento is awesome, the people are proud Californians who are accepting of many different cultures. Urban, EDM, Rock, Hipster, MMA, Foodie, Hippie, Bro, Night Life, Fashion, you name it we got it!! We like how we're close to the beach, close to the snow, but also far enough away from a lot of the heavy traffic areas of California. Water Falls, Camping, Rivers, Lakes, Parks, and Hiking are all close by. Good vibes good times. Nor Cal way of livin.

Man this movie was weird. It's one of the only movies that I've seen in a while that's really made me think. Most movies just ask you a big question at the end after presenting arguments. Like, asking "is poverty justified?" after watching a family struggle through it. But this film was different, it gave the viewer a bunch of information and now it's up to them to figure out the question. It was really like a big puzzle. We were given a collection of hand selected, short scenes and then a blank question space. I guess spoilers
I think it's cool. People say it's about the mother daughter relationship, but I can't really see that after rewatching it. The mother daughter relationship stayed pretty consistent throughout the movie. Like, in the first 30 minutes Lady Bird says something about her mother being tough on her and still loving her. And that understanding doesn't waver throughout the film meaning that this can't really be what the films about.
If I had to take a crack at the meaning or the question asked, I'd say it's Why do we believe what we do? My reasoning for this is that it connects all the information given.
Why did we start the Iraq War if everything is fine outside of 9/11 (muslim cleric)? Why does Danny think he's fully gay and or has to pretend? Why is Kyle so mistrusting of institutions? Why does Lady Bird hate her town so much? Why does the Dad think he can't talk about his struggles? Why does the brother insist on being goth? Why does Jenna not like dishonesty and yet she's the least real character? Why does the Julie think she's undeserving of happiness? Why does the Mom think she has to be so tough on Lady Bird specifically? And the big question explicitly asked at the end, why do people not believe in God but walk around with this random name they got however long ago?
Every single one of these characters gets their views challenged in one way or another. So that's why I think that's the meaning of this film. And this is likely why it seems so weird to people yet so good: it's meant to conjure confusion.
    P.S.
I think the coolest shot is at 2:20

What I loved about this film is that it captured what a full year of life in school could be, things coming and going. Your parents financial issues or mental illness being an unexpected thing you and your family will worry about. (Although I do feel like they could’ve said at least one more thing about the fathers depression but depression doesn’t go away in a scene, maybe they intended it to be there in the back of our minds for the remainder of the film? So we can grasp why the character does or acts the way they do?)
Anyways I really appreciate how this film is simple yet keeps me interested, of course I saw a lot of things coming but I was invested in the characters enough to want to know how they react.
Also the same thing with the pastor mental illness problem, maybe because we didn’t see the rest of his story because ladybird never really found out and her life just keeps going without ever thinking about what the pastor is going through.
Idk this movie touched me as a 21 year old who found many of her senior high school problems relatable,

Tropes can be effective story telling tools, hence why they are tropes. The problem comes when the trope itself is meant to carry the story. The authenticity of "Lady Bird"'s characters and preformances of the actors means you can have any trope you want and said trope will still have weight and depth.
Tropes are just furniture - you can rearange them however you like. Good stories come from good characters, which "Lady Bird" has in droves.

I still think about the scene when they go to an open house and you see Laurie's character linger in the kitchen for a little while. The yearning in her eyes standing in a designer kitchen of a home she and the audience know will never be hers. It breaks my heart every single time I see that scene because of how painfully real it feels.

I loved lady bird. It had wonderful dialogue and was wonderfully performed. The last scene where we have lady bird talking about the first time she drove through Sacramento and the image of her and her mother is seen might be one of the best directed and edited scene of the year. Also Greta being nominated for Oscar is also really great as she could get better funding for her next project.
The problem that I had with the film was that it was quite tightly editted ( strangely so because it was her first features). I longed for the conversation that were edited out. Also visually the film failed to show Sacramento ( Which cancels out the beautiful scene where the head nun tells to lady bird that she loves Sacramento and that love and attention are same).

This movie is also a great love letter to Sacramento. Having lived there almost all my life and having close friends that went to the catholic school portrayed in the movie, it makes the movie hit even harder. Too bad I was only twelve when this story took place.

I loved this film as well. I think Gerwig successfully avoids falling into any cliche traps because of the smart scriptwork. The film is sympathetic to Lady Bird as the protagonist but it does not fully assume her beliefs allowing the push and pull of the mother/daughter relationship to genuinely lead to the completion of Lady Bird's arc in the end when she goes to church, calls her mom, and reassumes her birth given name.

I value your opinion in regard to film. The first time I watched it I cried through out the entirety of the film because I wanted my life to be like that and in some aspects it was but not the ones I romanticized in my head now watching this a year later I can value this film and it makes me feel a type of way it was intimate and cute but. Well I’m not gonna go to deep into it but I will leave it at that.

I am wondering how people think Lady Bird and Eight Grade compare and contrast. I personally preferred Eight Grade because the main character was more relatable and the tension in the movie was done really well. But Lady Bird is more about her interactions with other characters. And her finding her place with other people.

I may be in the minority here, but I really didn't like this movie. For me to personally enjoy a movie, I have to like the characters, and I didn't like any of them. I will admit, the mother-daughter relationship was well done, but the mom and daughter themselves? I didn't like either at all.

  • @drew_ytp

My thoughts on this film are quite mixed.
I loved the beginning, it had an almost magic vibe where you feel like anything is possible, despite things sometimes going wrong.
Further into it, I had a really hard time watching since it portrays horrible aspects of life that I still struggle with to this day. Stuff like depression, hopelesness, trying so desperately to fit in, super toxic relationships with your mother. I didn't hate these moments, the fact that they got me feeling so bad is because they are fabulously depicted. But yeah it still felt bitter.
The ending doesn't help too much with that either, she still lies about where she comes etc. She tells her mother that she loves her but it felt very weird. I think it was meant to be this way, showing that their relationship will never be that simple.
Anyway that was my crappy opinion, accompagnied with a hint of hit or miss analysis lol.
