      If you liked lady bird, and it’s mother, daughter dynamic, then you should check out The Edge of Seventeen. It’s a bit more cliched and definitely less indie, but I honestly think it’s better than lady bird. It’s incredibly funny, extremely relatable and emotional. And Hailee Seinfeld’s performance trump’s saoirse Ronan’s imo. Kyra Sedgwick is also great, really everyone is great. The direction, all the actors; it’s seriously underrated. • @miken4879
      @miken4879 4 года назад +22

      In almost every one of her interviews about Little Women, Gerwig says that she’s never known a time when she didn’t know who the March sisters were and talks about identifying strongly with Jo. The plight of female artists as illustrated through all four March sisters resonated so much with Gerwig as a female artist herself that she was compelled to adapt it despite its numerous iterations.
      Clearly both films are very personal to her, so I don’t think there’s any use in debating which one is more personal when determining a “winner.” Just because Little Women doesn’t incorporate autobiographical elements doesn’t mean it’s any less personal.

  • @mackielunkey2205
    @mackielunkey2205 4 года назад +447

    What I really liked about Little Women is the little extra things she adds. Particularly in the scene where Jo talks to Marmee after Amy fell through thin ice and tells her that she needs to control her anger. And at the end Marmee says “there are some natures too noble to curb and too lofty to bend.” I really liked that. She’s basically saying that it’s hard to control our tempers and it’s ok to feel anger at times.

I don't know if it's the story, childhood - adulthood comparisons, the romance, the warmth, the women themselves. it takes you to a time in your own life where you too were joyous. it's almost a time machine for your own life watching the films & having memories flood from you own past. it's quite a transcendent and beautiful experience in the theaters.

    i think it is important to remember that greta said throughout recent interviews and panels that little women was THE movie she wanted to make- the one she is most proud of. she had the first screenplay for little women done before she begun lady bird, and she says that she feels the spirit of louisa within her as she grew up with the march family. to me, little women is her best because of the way she adapts the story into something so fresh, universal, and personal to not only herself, but to the new generation of people being introduced to little women. i adore both movies and find greta to be one of my biggest inspirations when it comes to filmmaking. you can see her spirit within every frame, every movement, every line of little women and i feel it applies to me as well in some way. it truly broke my heart when her work on this movie went so unrecognized throughout the award season, but i know to me she made one of the most brilliant, beautiful movies i've ever seen.

    I liked Lady Bird but I really don’t understand why everyone is treating it like it’s some groundbreaking piece of art. I’m not saying you can’t emotionally connect with it but the script is filled with the same clichés that every single high school movie has already. Other than the mother-daughter relationship it can hardly be considered an “original” screenplay. I think Little Women is the clear winner for me because of how Gerwig structures the story in a really clever way. Unlike Lady Bird, which has a plethora of disposable plot-device-characters, Little Women only has a small handful of these and they don’t detract from the story at all. Again, I still like LB but I adored LW

    Little Women is amazing. But then again, almost all of the adaptations are. The 1994 is phenomenal as is the PBS miniseries. But the book is the glorious masterpiece. This version clearly took it in a new direction and discussed relevant themes, but Lady Bird felt so near and dear to her heart. It felt completely raw, the story she has always wanted to share. And I think that really shows when comparing the two films.

    Lady Bird is no doubt a good movie, but it feels very cliche with its “I have to hang out with the cool kids” subplot. It feels out of place and really hurts the movie for me. I would choose Little Women, just because of what a spectacle it is and how rewatch able it is.

    • @evie2356

      Many teenagers do feel that way though, especially coming from maybe a poorer background and going to school with wealthier kids etc. Everyone wants to fit in and everyone goes through the challenges of finding who you belong with. It might be a story told a thousand times but it will always be relatable to so many of us.

    • @davidcorica9972
      @davidcorica9972 4 года назад +11

      It wasn't specifically about hanging out with the cool kids. Lady Bird always had her own idea of who she was in her head. She hated parts of her real life and her real home, and spent the majority of the movie acting out in ways that expressed how she saw herself, while the conflict was how those actions affected the people around her. The whole movie is based around her exploration of herself and her relationships with the people around her, so I don't understand how this subplot is out of place in any way.

    Loved Lady Bird but I honestly felt a little bit let down by Little Women. I was a fan of the older versions, but Gerwig's version felt like it was missing a lot in terms of warmth and charm. Laura Dern, Bob Odenkirk, Emma Watson, and Meryl Streep all had parts substantially too small for their talent. Their appearances in the film all felt more distracting than immersive, which is a shame because all of these actors can disappear in a more substantial role. Meanwhile Florence Pugh was massively miscast as young Amy. She plays a dynamite old Amy, but acts way too young for her size and obvious approximate age when playing the younger version. It's played up for laughs, but again feels more distracting than immersive, and would work better on stage than in film in my opinion. Obviously I'm in the minority on that point as she was nominated for best supporting actress, but for me young Amy was the worst part of the film and it wasn't close.

      Little Women was not a major letdown. It was a great movie. Plus, the new version still got warmth and charm that the old versions have, while bringing something new to the table.
      Also, Emma Watson Laura Dern, Bob Odenkirk, and Meryl Streep all had parts utilized effectively and aren't a total distraction. Plus, Florence Pugh isn't miscast as Amy. She nailed it, perfectly.

    Tbvh, i love both films so it's very hard to choose which is better. Not to add how both have different genre. Little women focuses more on the drama, it is very heartwarming and sad at the same time (not to mention i'm still not over Laurie and Jo). While Lady Bird is funny and raw and very relatable. But Greta did a very good job in little women- the script is just soooooo good and i love the transitions of present scenes and the past scenes, plus she did so well in the blocking and just literally everything. Same in lady bird, the script is just so perfect, everyone can relate with the mother-daughter relationship. But i guess i'll choose little women as a rank higher than lady bird sgsjskks NEVERTHELESS, Greta Gerwig did a perfect job directing these two films bc damn, the first time i watch little women, i never thought it was directed by the same director of lady bird.

    I am a 26 y/o man and I am not American let alone from Sacramento. But Lady Bird just spoke so much to me and it reminded me of all those good and bad moments from my own teenage years. So even though I love her new take on Little Women and to me the cast was phenomenal and cinematography breathtaking, Lady Bird just hit me on such a personal level it will always remain one of my favorite movies and one which I would keep coming back to in down times.

    In my opinion Little Women is on another level. I think it beats Lady Bird in every aspect and, to be honest, the thought of even comparing them seems really unfair to Lady Bird.
    Little Women was outstanding from start to finish, Greta accomplished to masterfully and uniquely portray a story that has been told several times. I heard lots of people complaining about having another adaptation of the books but not one not being amazed by it after watching it. The decision not to make the story in a chronological order was really refreshing and how she decided to tell the story was brilliant, choosing very wisely how to parallel the childhood and adulthood of the March sisters. The acting is top notch, everyone embodied their characters incredibly, among the very best I've seen. And every single frame of the movie is beautiful, you could stop the movie at any single time and get a gorgeous painting. I loved how warm and cozy every scene from their childhood is in contrast to the colder ones shown in their adulthood. It did the iconic books justice, at last.
    I liked Lady Bird but I don't think it was anything unseen. There are many other coming of age stories which were well received by the critics and not your stereotypical teen drama, it was nice but that's it. Lady BIrd and the mom were the most fleshed out characters and their dialogues were great but aside from that I really don't see anything great from it, several conversations with side characters actually felt a bit shallow and the overall story isn't amazing either. Like I said, it’s a nice coming of age with an interesting mom-daughter relationship.

    There are scenes in Little Women where I can't help but crying. It just hits so hard, some moments in the film ate the events of my or my sisters' lives so accurate that it's getting ridiculous. But then - Lady Bird. The owner of my heart, my warm blanket and my rest from the world. I probably rewatched it 6 times and every single time I cried in the end. I can't chose. Greta's works feel so close to my heart always

    Family relationships,sisters fights,argues,plays and everybody has flaws.
    There was line that hit me hard as I going through this phase 'We are no longer children' or something about growing up
    The best thing about little women for me was the change Greta brought while adapting the story(thank you oscar for sreenplay nom and JojoRabbit was also good)Greta changed the story beautiful to connect Jo's life with the writer.Back in the those days when 'Little Women' book was released the book was forced to have 'marriage' at the end.The movie also had marriage at the end but their love story felt less which makes the story better,we question which was true.Jo whishes if life was like a Book and had a happy ending,the story was indeed a fantasy but in real life things are different...

    i loved little women very very much, but the mere mention of ladybird and im on the brink of tears. i cannot express how much of an impact it had on me and how much i related to everything in ladybird, from the idealistic wish to leave your hometown to her relationshio with her mother, i remember watchin the scene with ladybird asking her mom how much she has to pay her back and being amazed that i had almost exactly the same conversation with my mother word by word. ladybird is so formative for me and it s very hard for me to think of a film that hit me as hard as this one did, so for me, it ll always be ladybird. but little women was also soft and tender and beautiful, and the scene in which Jo tells her mom that she believes women can be so much more than just be in love, but she is so lonely, made me burst into tears with how much emotion i felt towards that.

    i just recently watched ladybird, and when i tell you i couldn't look away- not to sound pretentious, but the ways in which ladybird invites you in and kinda indirectly includes you is just *yes*. i felt like in the short time we had together i had made friends with the characters, and often found myself so encased in the "drama" of it that it literally just took me out of my life. i could see myself in her and to be honest, almost every character. and its definitely not because im a teenage gorl who lives in sacramento lol. and because of this connection, i could really feel what this movie was all about. this movie made me think about it for awhile afterwards, something that very few movies actually do, i felt reflection on both Ladybird's and my own actions and decisions, with it also leaving an aftertaste of contentment somehow bittersweetness. i fucking love this movie, and my dramatic ass analysis aside, you should 10000% watch it because 1) its on netflix right now, and 2) while the meaning and emotions are different for everyone, its still a fucking powerhouse of a movie. go watch ladybird

    2 films about privileged white girl problems. Both really good but both overrated. Lady bird didn’t invoke rebellious youth guess I was more of a rebel in school and I thought I was a pretty straight arrow. Little woman was another adaptation not much better than the last. Greta is fine but I wouldn’t call her one of the decades best film makers.

    • @oliverkidd2741

      Азаргаева Александра you took the first thing I said a little too seriously. Just thought the video was trying to victimise the characters a bit to much. To be fair in the 19th century woman were like men’s property and it sucked. And yeah not getting on with your parents annoying but like that’s most of of us. I personally didn’t find lady bird to be inspirational but rather an interesting insight into someone who had a different upbringing then me. Nothing wrong if you do find it inspirational I just didn’t. And little woman is about the gentry who still don’t work for living. Good films about relationships and growing up and the struggles of 19th century woman hood. As the guy in the video said lady bird didn’t have anything important to say and wasn’t really dramatic or hilarious funny but it has its moments. And that’s I fine I just think Greta Gerwig has been over rated a little. Like if it weren’t for her being female I wouldn’t say she was snubbed from the oscars the other directors were better. I hope Greta continues to make good movies.

  • @monio.9444

    Great video! I think that the idea of both movies is the same one: they both are an eulogy for that place we grew up in and that we will always love and miss and even idealize once we leave it. The difference, tho, is that Ladybird only realized she loves her home town - or the memory of it - once she left for New York. In the meanwhile Jo from Little Women always knew that she will miss their home and childhood and being together with her family. She was desperate to keep things as they are and make childhood last a little longer. It seems like Greta Gerwig has a favorite theme and i m really excited to see this theme in other future movies of hers, because it s a very beautiful and authentic one. This is to Gerwig as the theme of the missunderstood introverted weirdo is to Tim Burton (which can be seen in most of his lead characters: Edward from Edward Scissorhands, the corpse bride, Jack skelington, Vincent, Lydia from Beetlejuice etc.) She seems to be a very emotionally inteligent person with a real sense for this kind of experiences. She said once that clishés are valuable if you know how to use them, which is so true. She could make a masterpiece out of any cliché.
    P.S. please do a movie analysis on Almost Famous. It's such an underrated movie the many people only look at as if it a a funny comedy to watch when you re bored. But there is so mjch more there, especially the uncut version. It has the same quality of sentimental truth to it.

    i honestly thought the acting and expression of the time period through the actor’s dialogue in little women fell flat and felt inauthentic. this might be because i’m very attached to the 1994 version, and compared the two right after watching gerwig’s iteration. the 94 version just felt much more subtle and natural, and the mannerisms of people living in the 19th century appeared to be more accurate. still love greta and some of the performances in hers tho

    The thing that (only slightly) puts Lady Bird ahead of Little Women for myself personally is its soundtrack. Both have wonderful scores by talented composers, but I enjoy the soft-spoken warmness of Brion’s musical palette (not that there’s inherently anything wrong with a grandiose, big-budget sound, it’s really just down to personal preference). I also think Gerwig’s choice of curating an early 2000s playlist gives Lady Bird an edge over Little Women, allowing the audience to connect with certain moments and themes on an additional level through both its selected lyricism and our preexisting personal attachments to the songs on their own.
