  • Mazatlan, Mexico has gotten a reputation as a dangerous place to visit, but Americans and Canadians who live there or visit frequently say it's safer than back home.

Mazatlan is one of the finest places on earth. The people are happy, polite, welcoming, friendly and sweet. This describes everyone we met from bus drivers, market sellers, people on the street, you name it. In two weeks, we never saw a negative thing occur between anyone anywhere. If you are comfortable in your own skin, you will find this city as pleasing and excellent as any place you will ever go.

I spent several years writing about Mexican baseball and in 2010, my wife and I FINALLY took a trip to Mazatlán from our home near Seattle for ten days. While this video appears to be something you'd expect from a Chamber of Commerce, it's pretty much spot-on. We had a terrific time and never once felt close to being in any kind of danger while staying in Olas Altas.Bottom line: Don't be afraid to go to Mazatlan because you'll have the time of your life as long as you exercise a modicum of common sense. I can't speak highly enough of the Mexican people, who are as gracious and generous as they are friendly.

Thanks for this video! I lived & worked in Mazatlan for a few years and had great experiences. I get so tired of the debate with gringos in the USA who have never been to Mexico, yet they have a very solid opinion they have formed about Mexico. Their ignorance comes from the media, and from scare stories they have heard from their neighbor's cousin's wife's brother-in-law who went to Mexico in 1975 and had problems(no mention that the guy was a rude drunk). Fact: Mazatlan is a wonderful city!

Mexico gets a bad rap from what happens in the border cities. Stay away from TJ and Juarez. Don't flash cash or act like a douche and you'll be fine. Treat their home with the same respect you'd treat your own and you'll be fine.

I recently moved to Mazatlan from Phoenix Arizona, where I lived for more than 35 years. I can say without a doubt that Mazatlan is safer that Phoenix Arizona, and the people here in Mazatlan are wonderful. They treat you like family. I have yet to learn how to speak spanish so I can hold a conversation, but I am practicing everyday. I am so glad I decided to live here in Paradise!!

Great video Jim! I grew up in Culiacan, that is where the big problem is. Mazatlan is one of my sentimental favorite places on earth and plan to live there some day. Growing up I went to Mazatlan once a year, loved it every time... for some reason the food there is excellent just about anywhere you eat.

Mazatlan is a better place to visit than ever. Things in Mexico generally have calmed down. We love it here, feel totally safe and enjoy spending each winter here. The Mazatlecans are amazing people, warm and friendly. It is sad to see the impact the drop in tourism has had on them because of baseless fears.

32 years for winters and have never NOT felt safe. Once the kids reached 6/7, we started taking them with us. Once they reached 16, we turned them loose to explore on their own. Have made SO many friends here. Have gotten into conversations with federal marines and municipal police and have held their weapons even as I've shown them pics of my weapons.

By the way, the excellent song in this video is called Corrido Mazatlan, aka El Corrido de Mazatlan.
Mazatlan has a very high literacy rate, probably a better income per capita than many US cities(when you factor in local economy, cost of living, etc.). I always encourage other non-Mexicans to visit Mazatlan. Exploring this town makes you more of a traveler than a tourist.
    Viva la tierra mazatleca!

There are neighborhoods in the U.S that are a thousand times more dangerous than the whole city of Mazatlan, yet one or two crimes and the U.S media makes Mazatlan sound like something out of the movie Escape from New York

As a mexican citizen and RVer, I can tell you that banda music goes along wherever you visit, I personally hate it, but I must take it; Mariachis don´t represent me, and soccer sucks as anywhere in the world. But when it comes to safety, no place in Mexico is more dangerous than any place in USA. One thing is trafficking with drugs, but far more dangerous is to consume drugs. The only thing I like from USA is how they make RV´s. In fact I bought mine in Texas, and brough it to Mexico right away. My visa has expired, and I have no plans to renew it. I will eagerly donate my share so Trump will build that wall...

My family and I have been to Kuala Lumpur, Rome, Paris, Alaska and so on but I was ignoring Mexico because of the drug wars. So I book my wife and two babies a 7 day vacation package to Cancun and it was one of the best times I had when we were on vacation. The resort and the Mayan Ruins reminded me of Angkor Wat...amazing! If you’re there to have fun and not look for drugs or a whore, you’ll be safe.

I'm Mexican and I agree with everything they said in the video. This war on drugs is pretty much between the government and the cartels, if you don't belong to either then you're relatively safe. Also this violence is more prevalent in cities near the border with the US.
Not only rich Americans feel safe in Mexico.

I visited Mazatlan for my first time this past February. Having heard all the stories I didnt know what to expect. I was pleasently surprised to say the least. The Mexican locals are friendly and I feel safer walking the streets there than I do in many Canadian cities I visit or even the medium size city in British Columbia where I live. Dont believe the hype ! Typical media makes a mountain out of a mole hill. Use common sense as you should anywhere and YOU WILL LOVE MAZATLAN !!!

The City and Port of Mazatlan have been overlooked for many retirees from USA and Canada is because: No. 1: The drug culture is from the State Of Sinaloa, where Mazatlan is located, along with many drug lords and traffickers are born in that shithole, the beaches are contaminated and the people are not friendly, No.2: The "banda" music and the performers are in common with the drug cartels culture and the songs called "corridos" glorify the drug lords and their violent behavior, all the youngest wants to be like them , after all, Mazatlan is a very dangerous place to live, drug gangs are roaming the streets and killing each other almost every day...do you want to live in a place like that?
