I was playing this morning, and I shot an arrow through a fern at an rda mech, and not only did the mech’s front glass shatter leading to a unique animation where the soldier inside was scrambling for his mask, but the fern I shot through lost only the part of its mass that the arrow went through and the rest kept standing except for where I’d disconnected it with an arrow…I’m blown away by the tech here

If they didn't nail it it wouldn't come out... hahahaha Cameron might be an egotistical diva that thinks he's 100 times better than anyone else, but to be fair... the man is a genius when it comes to film making and he doesn't settle for anything than 2 steps ahead of what's currently possible... all of his movies hold that standard... I was so hesitant on this game because it just looked like another farcry. But after watching the release reviews, it has completely changed my mind, and now I want to play it.
How is it Ubi get their main franchise all wrong yet get this so right. I’m a big Avatar fan so was really wanting this to be something so definitely looking forward to grabbing it!
Because their franchises already have a solid idiot install base so pumping out a sequel every 2 years makes financial sense. Avatar was overseen by James Cameron and his studio and every decision had to go through him. Basically because Ubisoft weren't allowed to force out shit it will be much better than usual
I dunno but their 3rd party franchise games have been a cut above their own IP as of late (the nintendo colabs and now this). Might be they dont have the creative chops at the studio(s) anymore to realize/make their own world building work (or the creatives are just tired of their own IP). Here they dont have to do as much work in that department since there is already established lore and world for them to draw on... but who knows? Whatever the reason is, this looks way more bespoke than their usual open world adventures. Peace
Worldbuilding isn't Ubisoft's strength, or at least it hasn't been for a long time. Adapting a preexisting world into an interactive format, however? Not as difficult as building something new from the ground up.
Something I love so far is how well they’ve nailed the feeling of being a giant blue person. Running through the tutorial section and regular corridors basically being air vent sequences where you have to crouch - they just nailed the scale of it. Especially compared to Armoured Core where most levels you just felt like a regular sized thing, not a huge hulking mech.
The level of care, detail, and variety in the world is one of the reasons I love open world games like this in the first place. To explore places like this is such an experience that I end up coming back to it over and over again.
Played a few hours today and am impressed. Feels like a sister game to Sony's Horizon series in a lot of ways...but with blue people. Massive is pretty much Ubisoft's secret weapon at this point.
If you had told me I'd be more excited to play an Ubisoft open world movie based game, rather than a new Bethesda IP, I'd call you a liar... And yet here we are.
Makes me so happy you like this one Austin, was waiting for the review to go up on this channel before deciding to get it. But Avatar fan and this made me much more excited to play it.

I'm only a few hours in so far, but i've been blown away by the visuals and how pretty the music is to go with it. It runs decently well on my old potato PC as well shockingly
As a huge fan of Avatar, I'm pleasantly surprised Austin strongly recommends it! Avatar's strength is always the world and it's themes, and Ubisoft were definitely the right pick for this. Also, feeling vindicated in choosing the PS5 for the controller, it sucks going back to normal rumble!

When you play this game I just don't understand how you can be so numb to not appreciate the incredible amount of work and technology that went into this. It's obvious where the work was put and it's a very critical aspect of Avatar, it's deeper than just graphics and critics that can't get that are discredited IMO

I'm a huge nerd of the films. The first movie was very weak but the lore and world that James Cameron built was absolutely incredible. The second movie really stepped it up with the story and writing. I'm watched dozens of hours of lore videos, learning everything there is to know about the Avatar Universe. So when I tell you I was way more excited for this game than most people, I'm not kidding. I've only been able to play 4-5 hours or so, but I'm really enjoying my time so far. It doesn't feel nearly as much like Far Cry as I expected. I love those games, have close to 1000 hours in the entire franchise but I was glad to see this felt like a new game. I had not heard of this game until a week or two ago. I saw your review pass by and decided to give it a shot. You are completely correct in saying that the world they have crafted is next level, including the characters and sounds. While it has some tedious open world elements, you can safely ignore those if you wish. The world and story are plenty engrossing and engaging. Really made me feel like I was in the Avatar movies at times.
I'm enjoying it quite a bit so far. But I will say, if you opt for "exploration mode," be prepared to spend A LOT of time just trying to find quest objectives. That extra bit of immersion definitely has a cost in terms of time spent.

The video game community loves to live in a spiral of hatred for anything that’s not a perceived masterpiece. A side of the backlog/fomo culture of people wanting to play “everything good” It’s like they can only justify not buying the games if they actively hate on them. I wouldn’t pay full price for this, and yet I think it’s worth checking out so I got Ubi+ to play it super cheap

Glad someone else is willing to voice their appreciation for Avatar. It was a tremendous marriage of cutting edge tech, world building and masterful blockbuster writing and direction (even if the story and theme were somewhat derivative). The second one bored the pants off me though.
The strong points of Avatar is definitely it's tech and presentation. I'm glad this game lives up to that. I can't really say the world building is a notable strong point simply because there's not much to it. Not necessarily a bad thing but it is how it is. Unfortunately I'm not a fan if Avatar because the story just isn't really intriguing. It's definitely a "blockbuster story". It's perfectly serviceable but nothing truly interesting. That's the one thing that's putting off on the game. I don't dislike Avatar, but I'm not a fan either. I'm afraid I might buy it then lose interest since there's not much substance to compel me. Or I might like it. I've liked games worse than what this sounds like. Just don't know. I'll probably wait for a sale.
@@sawdust8691for me the world building is strong because they so vividly imagined an alien world. When you first step into the jungle in the game everyone gets blown away. I also think the story is really interesting, or at least the premise. A human literally manages to inhabit an alien body, but yet still has the weakness of humans. Terminator 2 is a better movie, but it's really the premise that makes it, the story is just one long chase sequence.
That would be an incredible amount of work. They would have to do high quality animations for both first and third person. There is a reason why most games choose one orientation, getting one right takes tons of work, let alone having both. A lot of games that add another orientation don't add another set of animations and just reuse the original ones which are always lower quality than if they made custom animations for it.
this game is so much better than it had any right to be, and even though the story's kinda threadbare, as in the films, it's a wonderful experience for fans of Avatar or just fans of open world exploration. Massive have outdone themselves again, and it's a wonderful environment to just exist in, attention to detail everywhere. press will be divided on this one, but user reviews are far more positive than i expected as well. it's great to see it resonating with people who give it a chance. love the review, btw, will be sad when the intern come back and takes over again.
Ubisoft always builds amazing looking worlds they are great at that , really really good i would say.... Sadly the gameplay and story of most of their games is always horrible
What I really love about this game is that there aren't enemies around every single corner, like with the later Far Cry games. You want to explore, because you're not threatened that around each and every turn you have to get into combat with somebody. Trust me that gets sickeningly frustrating very fast for me. When a game that wants you to explore insists on attacking you around every corner with everlastingly spawning enemies you begin getting anxiety attacks at even remotely considering taking the unknown route to see if there is something there. This game lets you BREATHE and explore without that constant factor of threat, and I love it because of that. Add to that a great adventure and some nice loot-mechanics and RPG elements, and you have yourself a winner.

honestly i kind of hate the avatar movies for a lot of reasons, but i am not immune to gorgeous immersive open-worlds to explore so i'm actually excited to try this out (probably on sale)
Ubisoft dropped the ball on this. Considering this is one of the biggest IP in the world they chose to not put their normal full marketing budget into this game. It seems like the felt the game was poor and "thought" other people would have the same reaction after playing it. They were wrong and no matter how good this game actually is, not enough people are aware of its existence.
How I wish they had given us a choice to play in third person mode! It's such a common and enjoyable feature in games like Bethesda's and Rockstar's. I'm so disappointed that this game lacks it.
The little details can make the game in the sense of, if each adds to immersion, and immersion bring you into their world, and you're almost, if not completely in their world, then you're immersed. If you're immersed, then the developers job should be done. That's why Far Cry 2 is still one of my favourite games, even with the faults. Rear of the rpg shooting sparks, you happen to be on dry grass, well it's on fire and you're probably realising via damage taken and looking behind you. What might be seen as an annoyance and avoided now days, helped sell the world, thus, kept me in their world as video games for a lot are escapism. Cross that with small details like the bullet shell sounds on different surfaces, ammo crates exploding and causing carnage. All hostile to the player, an annoyance, yet brings the player closer into the world that the developer is trying to suck you into. This ended up on a FC2 praise comment, meant to emphasise the merit to the technical effort that Ubi/Massive put into this game, it outweighs the repudiative bases, modern conventions like crafting etc.
It's really encouraging to see Ubisoft adapt their typical game format to this world. It makes things feel just a little bit better than it just being Far Cry on Pandora. Do I think this can be taken forward as Ubisoft finally fixing their approach to making games? I don't know, they did put out Assassin's Creed Mirage just a few months ago. But at least it's a positive sign.
This game has like 6 weapons, 2 enemy types, no dynamic or moving NPCs, dreadfully boring and time wasting fetch quests, a paper thin villain with 20 minutes of screen time, boring traversal that turns into run/fly in a straight line for 5 minutes, absolutely no memorable characters and a story that is relegated to an Avatar filter arc. It's crazy to see how a reviewer I usually trust dropped the ball so heavily here, at least for me.
Love the channel and the review, but I have to bring something up that both Austin and Skill Up talks about (and sadly misrepresents or misunderstands) in many of their reviews: DLSS and rendering resolution. Saying you're testing the game in 4K while using DLSS performance is ignorant at best. DLSS performance renders the game at just 50% pixels per axis or in other words just 25% of the overall resolution, which means using DLSS performance in 4K the game is being rendered at 1080p. So being impressed that a 4090 can run the game at "over 60fps at 4K on ultra settings" is just baffling, because it's not running at 4K. That 4090 is only managing over 60fps at 1080p! The *output* is 4K, sure, but the game itself is only *rendering* at 1920x1080, and then DLSS is doing its best to make that look like 4K. Don't get me wrong it can still look great, but you're not anywhere near rendering at 4K, and so telling the viewers that "performance is good" while a 4090 gets "over 60 fps" at 1080p is either just doing nVidia's marketings for them or you're misinformed or misunderstanding DLSS. And for 1440p on the 3090Ti with high settings, with DLSS performance, you're rendering at just 720p and upscaling to 1440. So for that GPU to only manage in "50-60 fps" in 720p is not something that a reviewer should praise with and I quote "performance is good"...
The physical copy of the game requires online authentication and account registration to download and install the game, another step back for game preservation. Seems like big AAA publishers are doing this nowadays to their big ganes from Activision, WB, EA and now Ubisoft.

Really happy they actually cared to make a good Avatar game. I love the world building James Cameron and his team did for the movies.
the dev videos on youtube in the game's leadup are a great little watch, they show how much they worked with Cameron's team right down to the tiniest detail and care so much about getting it right, and for my money, i think they nailed it.
@@NF_Redux Dude... have you heard anything about James Cameron? If they didn't nail it it wouldn't come out... hahahaha
Cameron might be an egotistical diva that thinks he's 100 times better than anyone else, but to be fair... the man is a genius when it comes to film making and he doesn't settle for anything than 2 steps ahead of what's currently possible... all of his movies hold that standard...
Terminator 2 pushed film making to a very very new era... the Titanic in terms of visuals is a masterpiece... Avatar pushed us to the new age of what's possible with 3D... and so much more...
A James Cameron movie will NEVER EVER BE MEDIOCRE... and he would never ever let them push out some bullshit based on his work... the dude cares about his reputation more than any other director...
Now, can we have a WW2 shooter directed by Steven Spielberg??? Pretty please??? 😋

It's kind of a far cry but i like Far cry(enough to play it even though it's slightly above average) so imo, it's a decent game to consider.

Well, it is just Farcry on Pandora though
How is it Ubi get their main franchise all wrong yet get this so right. I’m a big Avatar fan so was really wanting this to be something so definitely looking forward to grabbing it!
Because their franchises already have a solid idiot install base so pumping out a sequel every 2 years makes financial sense. Avatar was overseen by James Cameron and his studio and every decision had to go through him. Basically because Ubisoft weren't allowed to force out shit it will be much better than usual
Probably because it's not Ubisoft proper making it. This the studio behind The Division, no? Let Massive do the next AC.
They don’t get far cry wrong. They just have done way too many of them, it’s sickeningly old now and it’s just not a fun formula anymore
So you recommend it? It’s worth $70

This is legitimately the most stunning setting I've seen in a video game in a long, long time. 4:05 Every time I want to be excited about a new Ubisoft game, then I listen to a snippet of dialogue and it kills the mood for me immediately. Its like they hire their normal floor developers to do the writing and voice acting.
An immense amount of the dialogue is just plain stupid and tiresome throughout. At thus point though, that's kind of ubiquitous with a Ubisoft game.
What a beautiful looking and sounding game this is , proper enjoying what I’ve played so far :)

The video game community loves to live in a spiral of hatred for anything that’s not a perceived masterpiece. A side of the backlog/fomo culture of people wanting to play “everything good”
It’s like they can only justify not buying the games if they actively hate on them. I wouldn’t pay full price for this, and yet I think it’s worth checking out so I got Ubi+ to play it super cheap
Can you blame them? Ubisoft has shown that they will willingly invest low effort if it gives them a quick buck. The ubisoft formulae didnt come out of nowhere, they created it, copy pasting shit across all there games.
Its good that this is an anomaly, if l get time l will pick it up since l love the movies. But l understand why many are skeptical with ubisoft open world games.
@@alispeed5095 I wouldn’t blame anyone. It’s an observation. Apathy towards Ubi copy paste games I’d understand. Indifference is one thing but the active hatred this game has received based on review scores is something else entirely. Mind you that games like this and others that get hated on right upon release aren’t even games that anyone has played.
My only criticism is I would like the option to stay in third person at all times instead of switching between the two
That would be an incredible amount of work.
So Ubisoft can make a good game w/o too much bloat; go figure. Looks really impressive!

Truth is, I'm so burnt out by ubisoft that even being told by everyone that this game is great, I can't bring myself to care.
This ended up on a FC2 praise comment, meant to emphasise the merit to the technical effort that Ubi/Massive put into this game, it outweighs the repudiative bases, modern conventions like crafting etc.

yea one of the worst AAA games this year.
It’s going to. It’s got Ubisoft’s name on it. They have a long way to go for redemption
Looking forward to when this game comes on sale, 70 euro is just a little too much for a game imo.
A nice surprise I'm glad they did the game justice and didn't release pure garbage.
I love playing it too. It’s fantastic
It’s a really good game. Somehow I’m a huge fan of the avatar franchise and this is one of the best video games I’ve ever seen.
This is how I felt about Hogwarts. Its no game of the year, but its one of the best ways to immerse yourself into the Hogwarts universe
Kinda but in Avatar the whole world is as detailed and exciting as Hogwarts castle :)
Great game. Put a few hours into it today. And i don't even like the movies that much. Ubisoft did great.
Nice review Austin! I'll be picking this one up when it's on sale.
In a year as stacked as this there doesn't seem to be much room for 7/10 games. Definitely think I'll grab this on a sale though.
Cool thing Is you can get it through Ubi’s subscription for $15/ month. Even if it’s for only a month, can’t beat that price lol
I don't think you watched Austin's review.
Yeah, it seems very much "fine." I'll get it on a deep discount but "fine" isn't worth full price.
