    The summer is here
    And the red tide's near
    The day breaks brown
But when the sun goes down
    The faces shine bright
    Through the whole night
    Her glow hypnotizes
As the sea drops and rises
Red tide come alive in the night red tide
    Come alive tonight - moonlight
I kick the crystals in to the sky
I don't stop to ask you why
    Red tide
    Friend of the moon
You come suddenly and leave too soon
I was beckoned from the western shore
I couldn't hold my spirit anymore
No legend could scare me still
I give in let go and drift
First glance and you drew me near
To the sand with the distant fear
A midnight flash it doesn't last
I have to wait until the seasons pass....

I've noticed there's a handful of their songs that can be loosely to very strongly correlated to methamphetamine and its use.
This song for example: would be a looser relation. When I analyze lyrics, I (what with my very later way of thinking) think of certain words used in the lyrics to be metaphors. So when I break down the lyrics in my mind, here's what I articulate:
    "The summer is here
    And the red tide's near
    "
(summer is a time where drugs are more frequently used, and where there's demand, in comes the supply.)
    "The day breaks brown
But when the sun goes down
    The faces shine bright
    Through the whole night
    "
(the classic 'Freaks come out at night' can be used to describe the way the lyric gives the implication that the day time had in fact been boring. It's common for meth users to stay inside during daylight hours, for a few different reasons: they're sleeping, it's the summer and hot outside which would be even more hot to the user with raise body temperature from the meth, or they don't want to be seen in broad daylight.--- When he says the faces shine bright, I'd say he's referring to a more lively, sociable, maybe even friendlier demeanor since they and high and stimulated. And the last line, need I explain? That is a strong suggestion that the is meth being used, as when one meth, sleep is not seen for a good while after you stop taking the drug)
    "Her glow hypnotizes
As the sea drops and rises
Red tide come alive in the night red tide
    Come alive tonight - moonlight
I kick the crystals in to the sky
I don't stop to ask you why
    Red tide
    "
(her glow would be from the flushed color in the skin that occurs with meth use. The sea drops as rises, well that could mean two things. 1. think that "motion of the ocean" metaphor, yeah, he might be talking about sexual activity with this woman. 2.a loose relation: he could be referring to the use of a syringe, the sea dropping and rising would refer to the drawing back and pushing down of the plunger of the syringe. Then finally, the song title: this connection was made in my head fairly quick; anyone that has ever injected methamphetamine will tell you that the most exciting part of injection besides the rush itself, is when you poke a vein and draw back to register, and you see that dark red blood shoot into the colorless solution in the barrel; confirming that you are all clean for take off. The line about the moonlight, I can only assume, is the desire for better visibility in the night. If you've ever been out for a walk during a full moon and a new moon, you know there is a significant difference in visibility. When he says kick the crystals into the sky: stong and specific indication in using 'crystals', and by kicking them it sounds like this lady he is with is partaking in the drug alone, and he doesn't care much to be associated with it. When he chooses to not ask her why, could be his personality and him seeing it as none of his business, or he can't tell her how to live her life, or maybe he is in love with this gal, and just really doesn't know how to approach or where to begin that conversation)
    "Friend of the moon
" (again, active out and high during the night)
"You come suddenly and leave too soon
" (sounds like this gal comes by to get laid possibly, which meth is an aphrodisiac-- hence "suddenly" and after she gets off, she doesn't see much else to do there, him being a non-user, and she ventures out for her birds of a feather)
"I was beckoned from the western shore
I couldn't hold my spirit anymore
No legend could scare me still
I give in let go and drift
    "
(very obvious implication that he was waved over, possibly to meet with her dealer, or simply just to use that location to get high. His dropping his spirit correlates to his heartache from having a relationship with an addict, and not knowing how else to cope, he gives into the peer pressure. In fact, he's had enough of this hopeless feeling, and everything he was taught about meth throughout his upbringing no longer phased him. He surrenders his arm: "I give in", he either relaxes his tense body or releases his tourniquet from around his arm: "let go", and the plunger in gently pushed in, injecting him for the first time: "drift")
"First glance and you drew me near
To the sand with the distant fear
A midnight flash it doesn't last
I have to wait until the seasons pass....
    "
(After he is hit with the rush, he eventually looks at her, and it most likely be a turn on for her, drew him near and seem to have proceeded with sex on the beach, the distant fear could mean the extremely overwhelming feeling that is almost too much for the inexperienced user, or, being as he did inject it, he is overstimulated and paranoia ensues. A midnight flash is again referring to the use of the drug at night, specifically, 12:00am, the "flash" is another reference to the blood entering the syringe when registering, which 'flash' does a very good job in describing the motion in which in enters. It doesn't last, because you don't stay high forever, and when it starts wearing off, you realize the time had flown by. Waiting for the seasons to pass most likely refers to the stages of a meth high: the rush-the high--"tweaking" which is when you see meth addicts doing, well, tweaker shit. Bouncing from thing to thing, starting 10 different activities/projects and finishing none, taking things apart, obsessively cleaning, crawling on the floor looking for shards you "may have dropped", ect.- Now, this is probably where he starts "waiting for the seasons to pass": the comedown: a very long, drawn-out, miserable, agitating, depressing, aggravating, etc, etc, a state where you are going to feel the worst your entire experience. You had that amazing stimulation, you loved it, your brain loved it, your body loved how your brain made it feel from it, and its slowly but surely fading away, and all you want to do it get that feeling back. Also, you don't fade away back to normal. its going to be equally as felt as the good effects, only the complete opposite of. Users often find it extremely difficult to sleep until the later hours of a comedown. You are very tired, no fucking or motivation, but your thoughts still race when you close your eyes.--then finally, The crash: when you finally drained the tub. the amount of active speed in your system has reached low enough levels that you pass out. Depending on how many days you've stayed up, the crash can happen suddenly, weather your laying down, sitting in a chair, or leaning against the wall. it's inevitable. When you sleep, some users will literally sleep for a full day or 2, others will wake up when they're body is well-rested enough, but you will wish you could have slept those 2 days because your tank is on E as far as the meter will go.
I hope someone found this helpful or interesting as a new perspective. I would gladly analyze any of their songs the way I see it it anyone would like, just send me your request : )

Agreed majority of their songs are about drug use, at times it is more blatant than others. I love the innuendo they use to articulate it here. In big toe I believe he is talking about a narcissistic woman who abuses not only drugs but men.
But in Big Toe, the "she" can also be the drug of choice, she's a cold bitch, (drugs are unforgiving and relentless on their victims) she's turning him silver (the brutal effects of drugs on appearances) got him looking around in the forbidden city (scouring the hood/bad areas of town trying to score) and looking down at the old cold river (contemplating suicide to end it, the only way out)

Her glow hypnotizes, can be about smoking meth as well and the initial spark up, which puts people in a trance type state. The very first person to whip out the meth pipe is watched as he smokes by other addicts, who are nearly hypnotized just waiting for their turn. They don't understand their own helplessness and love that state just knowing they are about to use. The drug is that powerful. One look at it for the user and you're rendered unconscious, acting completely thru the subconscious mind, hijacked by its powers.
Smoking it leads to shooting in most cases but it always starts with snorting, or smoking.

A midnight flash is again referring to the use of the drug at night, specifically, 12:00am, the "flash" is another reference to the blood entering the syringe when registering, which 'flash' does a very good job in describing the motion in which in enters. It doesn't last, because you don't stay high forever, and when it starts wearing off, you realize the time had flown by. Waiting for the seasons to pass most likely refers to the stages of a meth high: the rush--the high--"tweaking" which is when you see meth addicts doing, well, tweaker shit. Bouncing from thing to thing, starting 10 different activities/projects and finishing none, taking things apart, obsessively cleaning, crawling on the floor looking for shards you "may have dropped", ect.-- Now, this is probably where he starts "waiting for the seasons to pass": the comedown: a very long, drawn-out, miserable, agitating, depressing, aggravating, etc, etc, a state where you are going to feel the worst your entire experience.

The noise at the very beginning seems like something that'd be in very early gorillaz songs.

    The summer is here
    And the red tide's near
    The day breaks brown
But when the sun goes down
    The faces shine bright
    Through the whole night
    Her glow hypnotizes
As the sea drops and rises
Red tide, red tide come alive in the night red tide
    Come alive tonight
I kick the crystals in to the sky
I don't stop to ask you why
    Red tide
    Friend of the moon
You come suddenly and leave too soon
Red tide, red tide come alive in the night red tide
    Come alive tonight
I was beckoned from the western shore
I couldn't hold my spirit anymore
No legend could scare me still
I give in let go and drift
First glance and you drew me near
To the sand with the distant fear
A midnight flash it doesn't last
I have to wait until the seasons pass
