Good Lord people give Finn a break. He is just becoming of age, lots of decisions, college, no college, van life, no van life, leaving mom, dad, family and the only life he has known. It’s not like when your parents live down the street from your new apartment, they will continue traveling and maybe Finn is contemplating everything including this separation in his head. My heart goes out to him.
I agree... none of these young people should be pressured to decide what the rest of their life will be, like there's some kind of deadline. It's ridiculous to expect that of anyone, and people should just figure it out naturally, whenever they realize what they truly want.
He just wants to be happy and free. I get whats up. I am going through similair behaviour that he is, I can tell. You go Finn, on the right track :)

For me, getting out from under my parents' excessive controlling was enough of a push to leave home @ 17 & never look back. I joined the military @ 19, married @ 20, etc.

The main difference between Keith and Renee and a lot of parents is that you both see your kids as people. You treat them with respect and as equals. I don't see the "because I'm the parent" or "because I said so" that a lot of young adults get when asking questions or wanting advice. Your kids can have emotions and opinions that you don't agree with and that seems to even make the bond stronger in the end. It's amazing to see and I wish I could have had this bond with my parents.
How refreshing it is to see Jack's take on his parents' advice. It took having a kid of my own to realize my parents had already walked in my shoes.

Finn buddy. Been in that chair you were sitting in, glad you got up and left. Sometimes there isn't enough space or too many cameras. A guy can't be "on" all the time. When the side you don't want to show the camera slips on, it makes you more relatable, respectable for not saying things you'd regret later. "We'll see" .....epic. Being in the fall going into winter of my life, it's very fulfilling to share the experience someone in the spring of theirs working it out. I enjoy what you create, Love who you are. @@pjritts1 Naaa i feel like Finn just doesnt really wanna plan everything about his upcoming Van Life and doesnt want to put any expectations for him or the viewers. Thats why he continously said "I guess well see" or something like that. Meaning He just knows that He will do Van Life soon and then see where it goes, which I think is totally fine :)
He's probably gotta figure out his finances first. Vans are not cheap. Oh, and you have to drive them. You know, with a driver's license...

Another difference between the Zatara family and crew is that they are NOT like the typical American family. Back in the States, the parents usually get in their car and drive to work and the kids go to school. Everyone goes their separate ways when they wake up, to the time they eat dinner. Dad goes off to work -- Mom goes off to work - kid one goes to school then to soccer - kid two goes to school then to dance and maybe scouts. With everyone hopefully making it home by supper time.
The Zatara family and crew wake up together -- do chores on the boat - eat all three meals on the boat, play together on the boat with sailing, fishing, snorkeling, vegging on the boat, fixing things that break on the boat. . . . . . Your day-to-day existence - work, play, eat, breathe, is together on the boat. The average American family never spends so much time together in the same space. This makes a huge difference in a parent and child - young or older child's relationship.
So does youtube pay for all this traveling? Or do all the visitors on the boat pay to be there?
They used to live like that until they changed their lives. You have to choose if you want the 9 to 5 or you don't then figure out how to make that work.
These are the most Mature Young people I've ever watched on youtube. Hands down. What Jaydn said about religious families is so true. My family holds things I've done in my past over my head for so long.. always accusing me.. its like they'd rather me back addicted to drugs so they can harass me for being on drugs. (I just turned 36, 10 years sober), almost everytime something is misplaced they accuse me of theft then shame me for what I did 15 years ago. It really sucks, this Christmas I wont be joining my family because they've been accusing my gf of theft and we weren't anywhere near them when it happened.... now i have to print out documentation proving them wrong, that they fell victims to a scammer or card skimming, etc.
All i can say is being shamed by your own family over and over again really sucks.
I love this channel, i dont ever miss an episode from any of you.. the amount of insight i get from Keith and even the younglings really helps me push to be better. Ive learned to let a lot slide off, but here and there some things stick and bother me.
There is "religion" by works and then there is having a loving relationship with Jesus Christ. He gave His life so we can acknowledge our sin, believe, repent, and have assurance of eternal salvation by His grace through faith. We are not saved by our own works. It's about humility, grace, love and forgiveness. People/family members who continue to berate someone over past sins are not followers of Christ. God said that "he who the Son has set free is free indeed."

And, also God said that "he has cast your sins into the sea of forgetfulness, to be remembered no more." I hope that Keith & Jayden don't allow the pious, pompous "religious" hypocrites (who Christ Himself condemned) to control and rob them of coming into the joy, peace and fullness of knowing and honoring Christ, loving His Word and abiding in His eternal promises.

You kids are so fortunate to have Keith and Renee foster these deep thought provoking conversations, it’s more valuable than you can imagine. At 56 I’m learning now how not having parents present in my childhood created voids in my life, I thought just survival was normal.

I really enjoyed the around the table discussion part of the video. Those kids (including my granddaughter Jadyn) are wise beyond their years. They all spoke so well and expressed their true feelings with an open heart. Keith has a knack for drawing them into a deep conversation. I had a 94 year old friend that just loved sitting around and talking about different things with Jadyn. If you asked her she would tell you she enjoyed talking with him as well. I think it’s a good thing to bring young teen/adults into these type of discussions. Nice job on this video, I really enjoyed it….

Wonderful to see such a well-adjusted group of young people! Talking intelligently, but also listening, thinking, without entitlement etc. All of them are going to go on and do great things in their lives of that I'm sure. Renee and Keith - you're doing them, and in extension "all of us", a great service, providing them with a nurturing environment, opportunities, as well as "putting them in gear", engaging their brains - well done and thank you to you both!

Jack, I hope you have a great adventure! It sounds like a lot of hard work, but it's good to go through that experience too, especially when you're young. Learning how to problem solve and learn new things will set you up well in life.

Well done Mom & Dad. Getting your offspring to sit and chat, about "anything" is just so special. Having raised my own 2 children on board, from birth. Home (boat) skooling, where the both went to Uni, with my son (2nd born), returned with his partner, to take over the boat, after the death of the "love of my life" (mother) passed away. We never hid / watered down / lessened any subject raised by anyone on our boat/home. Like you two, very interesting parents, all subjects were open, from sex, politics, religion, language (naughty and natural), to anything about the cultures we encountered during our (my 30yrs) of sailing. With over 130 countries visited, learning so many languages and the nuances each culture brings. All of this, helped us to keep ourselves "centred" and balanced with all that we could.
It was so very different (visa etc) when we started in 1985. Around the globe 13 times, along differnt lattitudes (under the 60deg south on one circumfrence), making nearly 500K nm along the way. The world is really a wonderful place and MORE should just get out there and see what is on offer. Keep up the entertaining vids. NOTE: in our time, no blogs / vlogs / social media stuff, it was all captured on stills and some "home movies", which helped to create the many story books we made along the way. Again thank you and keep having fun and be the good people you are.

your comment just made me smile. I´m im my 20s and the life you picture is what I pursue to look back to when old. I´m far away from marriage and children but reading about people like you that followed this dream and had this adventurous life is really inspiring. You should write an autobiography I would be more than pleased to read it.

@@highwaytohappiness4213 Oh they are there, the whole story, in 25 books, with pics. Also, 48 children (or adult) stories / colouring books. All were from real places and situations. Unlike current "social media" sailors/cruisers, where lots of things take forever to move from one place to another, as they have to retake/retake/alter the blogs/vlogs, as well as all the editting and this delays the time actually spent, making their own experiences. Most cruisers take 5-7 yrs to go around the globe. Our shortest trip around the globe was 4.5 months, due to the latitude we chose, below the southern 60 deg, close to the Antartica. Many maps / charts / electronic gadgets will suggest, the wind/currents go easterly, but below this latitude, there is a little known current/wind, which made this a relatively short circut and there were lots of different dangers "ice / ice bergs" etc. We did see many new and unusual creatures, polor bears, narwals, great southern whales and many penguin/seal species. This was just so magnificent for our 2 children and us as a family. Not many people venture "that far south", due to fear of the unknown. We only had to stop in SthAfrica & Faulklands, before getting back to Perth Aus for the start/finish. Not an official race, but one between a few boating friends. They all went east, we went west and beat them by about a month, hehehe.

The rare dynamic that you have is immediacy. Your togetherness extends for much of the time the distance of the boat. That's it. You are in essence forced together. I have spoken with farmers who talk about being together but they can escape through working the farm for day or days at a time to mull things out when there is tension. Your family has found a way to navigate the social immediacy in a healthy way for you as a family. There is also a terrific balance in your videos. I hope that the videos represent reality. Every person has a voice. Every voice is respected. I am certain if something were life/death related, the parents would exert authority but every person is respected.
I'm also glad to see Kate has been gaining in her confidence to express herself. She has three dominant men in her life. That cannot be easy to navigate.

Round Table Discussion: ABSOLUTELY GOLDEN. I never had that growing up, so there was LOT of knowledge which couldn't have been passed down, but wasn't. I started adulthood very knowledgeable i.e., book smart, but rather naive about too many critical things. My parents were like, "it's better if they learn it themselves." Having been an adult more than twice as long as a juvenile, I'm like, "No! I wished they'd passed down a lot more information about life! As it was, trying to get my parents' opinions on things was like trying to draw blood from turnips!"

I've been blessed as I think you guys are too, to be in a very close family dynamic where respect, values and kindness go a long way. We never had much growing up in terms of material possessions, nice clothes, fancy vacations or a lot of money but my parents worked hard for every penny they earned and were able to raise 5 kids who in the end never wanted for anything, love was enough. Not to say we didn't have difficult times such as eating bread and jam for dinner because there just wanted enough money for food or not having a bathroom in the house (we went outside in a lavatory) and washed ourselves in the kitchen sink. Looking back those were the best of times because we were all in it together and that's all that mattered. I see the same values in your children and they seem like well adjusted, thoughtful and caring young people. You have done an amazing job raising them so far and they are well prepared to step out into the world and follow their dreams.

Thinking Finn is somewhat "conflicted" at the moment... no worries, a bit of time and space... he's a very talented, smart and unique individual (you all are). "Growing up" is tough on everyone.

Great to see the group conversation very enlightening.
Especially enjoyed the table talk in this video, both Glory and Jadyn really highlighted how rare your family is...and all of you should be proud. I think Jack, Finn and Kate have an idea from spending time with the crew's that have come out...but it will really set in once they leave and head out on their own adventures. I'm sure Anna had some adjusting and can share with her siblings some of her lessons learned but we all walk different paths and some lessons have to be learned individually. I really believe that Renee and Keith have set up their kids as best as they can to succeed in life, it's not guaranteed but they're a couple chapters ahead of their peers in many ways.
All the girls started chiming in about going too and Jack's quietly thinking "Hey Hey Hey... this is MY gig, slow your roll girls!" LOL

My wife and I are a lot like you guys. We are super open with our kids, they tell us everything and we wouldn't have it any other way. They know the ups and downs.

This was an AWESOME video ! I started sailing with my Dad before there were self tailing winches much less roller furling sails, lol. I am 65 now and really miss time on the water. The ocean is a wonderful and wise, and sometimes harsh teacher, but there is none better in my opinion. I follow many sailing vlogs for the vicarious experiences and those that come from Zatara are really, really good. I long for those days but as a somewhat physically limited cancer survivor, I think my ocean going days are pretty much over, so I appreciate y'all so very much. I have sailed about half of the S Pacific and Tonga was my very favorite spot I visited so I hope Jack goes for that job ! We had some awesome sailboat fishing adventures near Vavau. Keep up the fantastic content and I will surely keep watching. Fair winds and safe travels guys !
My friend's dad is from Tonga. He left the island on a ship and sailed for over a decade without telling his family where he was. He came back and they had a huge celebration for him. If Jack goes, have him ask about Petesa Fou Mahe. He recently passed in 2019. He was such an interesting guy!

Thank you for this video, you said some things that I really needed to hear. I wish that when I was teenager I could have had some the same discussions that you had in this video or just have discussions about anything the way you do. I don’t know if you guys realize it, but you are wise beyond your years and are having a much stronger positive impact on people than you realize.
