You have a second generation 980. The first gen had an SWR bridge in front of the antenna jack and it was more open to being hacked.
The second gen had those parts removed entirely.
The 'random' wire connected to the receive can isn't a glitch or a patch. It's a ground. It was purposely put there. Many types of radios have that.
The 980 puts out anywhere from 2-3 watts AM straight out of the box, which will drive an RM Italy KL-203 amplifier nicely to around 100 watts..
You can disable that gawd-awful beep by following this procedure that is clearly outlined in the owners manual:
"ANL/NB: Provides 3-way control of ANL (Automatic Noise Limiter) or NB (Noise Blanker) features - ANL on, NB on, or both ANL and NB on or off. ANL reduces external noise. NB reduces interference from vehicle ignition systems.
For models produced after 10/2015: Press and hold for one second to turn key beep tone on and off.
Use this button to turn key beep on and off. Press and hold until BP ON or BP OFF displays."
All that is required to clear up the audio is to peel the little stickyback 'pop' filter off the inside of the mic screen. Butchering the mic is unnecessary.
The center pin on the power jack is not (and not supposed to be) connected to anything.
You'll notice that there is only a red and black wire entering the radio.
There is no middle conductor on either end of the jack. The center pin only serves as a locating pin to ensure the cord is not connected in reverse polarity.
The trimmer pots are very fragile and their range of adjustment is very small. Without test equipment, you'll probably bugger the radio up worse than it came from the factory.
It's built-in SWR meter is fairly accurate.
There are brightness and contrast adjustments in the main menu.
It isn't a software defined radio. It's a hardware defined radio.
    It's a software *programmed* radio.
It's processor is on the display board.
The 980 is probably *the* most frequency stable sideband rig ever made.
You'll have to chase everybody else around with the clarifier, but the 980 stays rock steady on frequency.
    There is no drift whatsoever.

In reference to his first criticism of the radio, about his concern that too much stress on the plug in the radio might loosen it. Having a stiffer strain relief on that end of the cord would actually put a lot more strain on that jack in the radio, so having a flimsy stress relief on that end of the court is actually decreasing the chances of the damage that he’s worried about. All the strain would be on the cord.

Great radio as a base station, worst radio as a mobile unit, that screen washes out in daylight and the only color that comes close to being able to see is the dark green and even that’s still hard to see, but the radio as a performer is still a good radio.

In the first edition there was a SWR bridge board screwed into the back there. In the newer models it was built right into the main board. No screw, new edition. Screw there, old edition. ;)

Just bought the same radio and have had it hooked up for a week or so now . it receives really well but don't get out very well in my area. My swr is set to 1.3:1 on ch1 up to ch20 and 1.5:1 on ch21 and up . I'm still micro adjusting I guess you could say trying to get out a little better. So far on AM I'm getting out about 2 miles and ssb haven't had any response yet. I do have a lot of trees in my area and I'm sure that's playing a major roll in my modulation. I would like to crank it up a little bit just to push a bit more out.still new to the digital style radios so I'm not to confident about tinkering with it. If you have any suggestions I'm definitely open to them. But personally I've liked this radio so far. If you are able to point me in the right direction on which pot to adjust to turn it up a bit I'd greatly appreciate it.thanks for the video . 73's

They can also be modded to swing the transmitter with the clarifier, i.e., tie the transmitter frequency to the clairfier frequency. I have an old J.C. Penney's single side band phase locked loop radio and it works better than any radio made to date.

that's strange about the talkback - maybe the talkback volume is down? or, the mic is bad as you said, but the most likely issue is that people you can hear are using amplifiers. the CB frequencies are the wild west of radio. even though amps aren't legal, people use them a lot. so, it's possible the people you hear are far away and using hundreds of watts in their amps

    • @TomsLife9
      @TomsLife9  6 лет назад +3

I would recommend a marine radio for a boat, as marine radios will allow you to communicate with other mariners on the marine channels, which this radio doesn't have. marine radios are also much more powerful out of the box. if you want to add a CB in addition to a marine radio, I think it would work fine for a while but would ultimately succumb to corrosion (marine radios are designed for the environment to at least some extent). however this radio has lots of features for the money, such as weather channels and scan function which might be nice additions (marine radios usually come with weather stations already)

dougsnova1 100% agree, i'd like to make a video soon about my post-tune power output

    • @dougsnova1
      @dougsnova1 7 лет назад +3

you won't get much more power out of it,just how it's designed.Be careful not to try to over tune it.You can get around 15 pep on SSB and about a 4 watt dead key and 8-9 watts swing on am.As for modulation don't touch the pot and just put a good power mic,not echo junk.

Mine doesn't turn on. I run an Antron 99 with a 1.1 match. It turns once in 10 tries

Daniel Kinsman intermittent problems are usually a wiring and/or power issue. That’s probably not helpful but it’s all I can offer for a remote diagnosis

MODS to remove beep?? hahaha... There is a simple 2 button press to turn it off. People... hilarious!

this is the second generation of the radio, and the original generation didn't have the option to turn the beep off. plus, the manual for this one didn't mention the new feature, it wasn't until someone commented on here that I found out it was added

Very pretty radio but it lacks the ability for modifications, I would look elsewhere.
1/2 of the fun in owning a CB is that fact that some of us can toy with it, if its not modifiable I wouldn't be interested in it.
    Thank you for your presentation.

Uniden built that way so they fly by shops cannot mod them. I've been running mine for 2yrs now.

I don't want any mods on any CB that I own so I consider it almost a PERFECT CB Radio.Just 40 LEGAL channels without all of the crap like Echo,Reverb,& Roger Beeps that so many Morons love. There is more than enough unwanted & unneeded noise on the CB Band already. What we need is far more clean audio radios like the UNIDEN 980 SSB.The Talkback is USELESS but I would never use it since it's a Stupid feature to me on any radio.

Thank you for the video. But in future videos, please get to the point. You waste a ton of time on trivia and obvious stuff. Know your audience. We know more than you think. Telling us how to work a microphone clip is an example of what no one needs to have explained.
