- U.S. Homeland Security Secretary Kirstjen Nielsen insisted on March 6 that the crisis at the southern border wasn't manufactured, as she faced questions from Democrats for the first time since they took control of the House.
Nielsen was grilled on whether she was aware of the psychological effects of separating children from their parents, and when she knew about the "zero tolerance" policy that led to the separation of more than 2,700 children from parents last year.
And she was asked about conversations with Trump as he declared a national emergency at the border to try to gain funding for his proposed wall between the US and Mexico.
Tens of thousands of families are crossing the border illegally every month, straining resources.
Last month, there were more than 76,000 migrants apprehended - it was more than double the same period last year.
She said the forecast was that the problem would grow worse as the weather got better; traditionally the early spring months see higher illegal crossings.
The hearing is one of three at the Capitol on border issues on Wednesday. Since Democrats took control of the House, they have prioritized investigating last year's family separations and have subpoenaed documents related to the policy.
The U.S. Senate is expected to vote next week and join the House in rejecting Trump's national emergency declaration aimed at building border walls, but Trump would almost certainly veto the measure and the issue is likely to be settled in the courts.

Honestly, the whole Congress and the committees should be mandated to spend a day in the cages. And if they complain, you add a day. Eat same food those people are, sit on the same hard concrete ground, cry the same hot tears of fear, exhaustion, and frustration. You never know what someone's life is like until you walk a mile in someone else's shoes. Then, they should also put their families and kids in them for a day too if they still oppose. That's how we will all get any where. Starting with Trump. Ok, here's a dumb idea. Why don't we try to see how we can help these Central American countries fix the problems that are causing people to flee? Yes, I know we have the attitude of fix the problems here first, but rather than throwing huge sums at a border wall and border agents, why not as try to address the root of the problem? The administration wants to blame Congress for not coming up with an immigration legislative plan. What would that look like? You have people fleeing violence and extreme poverty. NAFTA for all its negative impacts on US manufacturing cut down on adult male Mexicans crossing the border for economic reasons. Because they can find decent jobs at home.
