In the late 80's I worked onboard Crystal Cruises' 5-star cruise ship, Crystal Harmony. Bernie would sail with us in the Crystal Penthouse all the time. He'd always hold court in the Avenue Saloon bar until 2 or 3 in the morning telling Hollywood stories you would not believe. Great guy.
In the last year or two I've been listening, this was my favorite episode. I would stay up late on school nights to watch conans old late nite show and every triumph sketch was hilarious.
Robert Smigel was the missing special ingredient from all of Conan’s shows after the Late Show with Conan O’Brien. Robert’s Clutch Cargo bits were legendary. The other special missing ingredient was Max Weinberg. Robert Smigel is a comedic genius in every way. He propped up SNL in the ‘90s and Late Night With Conan O’Brien.
Not sure if it was a lot of annoying arguments to get the Ad placement at the start of video but big thanks for that. Also, this show is following the same track as Conan's previous successes. The loyal audience has told enough ppl about this podcast and youtube clips that I've heard 20 somethings talking about it and ppl in their late 60's. Thank you for the new content and trips back to the day(s).
This was one of my favorite episodes of the pod. Smigel is the man, and i hope he comes back with Triumph, maybe a whole episode or longer segment with triumph! Smigel himself is so good though. DEFINITELY have him back.
I have a young daughter who is big into movies and we have watched every animated film under the sun it seems. Every new kids movie we usually see in theaters, and at home at least once a week we watch an animated kid's movie. "Leo" is not only one of the best kid's movies I've ever seen, it is just one of the best movies period I've ever seen. It is incredibly funny, not just one a kid level adults WILL laugh too, very irreverent, silly, absurd, will make you cry laughing. But! Also incredibly poignant and heartfelt, very touching, great message, great storytelling, structure and ending. It's a masterpiece, and I don't use that word lightly.
Lookwell was a genius concept. I've turned so many people on to that pilot. I told Adam West that it could've been his second great role after Batman. Adam smiled and said in his Adam West voice, "You have excellent taste."
I came here cuz I typed in Bernie Brillstein. I heard his name mentioned in anecdote Sandler told about Norm MacDonald at his memorial gathering on Netflix, and Bob Odenkirk and Martin Short speaking warmly about him in both of their excellent memoirs, who he managed. Sounds like quite the character, one of the good ones in I'm sure a river of cad agents, managers, lawyers and producers. And man, Smigel's impressions are so good.
Lookwell was truly ahead of its time. It’s a shame it didn’t go to series, but as Shakespeare reminds us, “How oft the sight of means to do ill deeds makes ill deeds done!”
I wish they would do a cartoon of this movie, and have Arnold actually voice and him seeing what the scenes are and laughing while recording takes. He really should do this.
I disagree that the voice is more important than the animation. Not good animation. Good animation is, as Dana Carvey likes to say, "funny with the sound off." (Think of the Roadrunner) When the voice is more important than the animation, that's illustrated radio. It's possible to do artful work in that form too, but it's not the best animation.
I get what you're saying, but I'd have to say that bad voice over can completely ruin great animation... whereas great voice over can make even terrible animation watchable.
@@dannykent6190 Hmm. Could you give an example where bad voiceover ruined good animation? I agree that good voiceover certainly can balance out poor animation - you only have to look at the best Jay Ward or some early Hanna - Barbera to see that.
Funny thing is that there was probably better chance of getting green lit after lunch, judges tend to sentence harder before lunch than when they have eaten.

I was listening to this part while boarding a bus, it was so hard not to burst out laughing. I think the lady in front of me noticed because she gave me suspicious looks. 😅
Good lord, Robert Smigel is a Matt Gourley clone or the other way around.. With those hats, the glasses, the scruffy grey beard, I seriously couldn't tell who I was looking at when I first ran the video.
the sense I've always gotten of Bernie Brillstein, he's very boisterous and animated, like a what if Harvey Weinstein but w/o all the sexual harrassment baggage
Wait a minute! I'm ten minutes past a huge meal, and I still find this funny - does that mean I'm NOT digesting? Is this a new weight-loss method?? Or is it about to become the world's worst case of constipation?
Yeah the work of the guys who slave for years and develop every frame and do the job of multiple departments is less important than the celebrity voice actors who work for weeks if not days and take a bigger paycheck coz they're actors lol. There's voice actors who are legends & there are celebrities who get the part. Second category will never earn my respect.
We need Robert Smigel part 2. He needs to come back someday.
100 percent! Would also love to see Conan bring in one of his other all time great writers, Brian McCann
@@RockyHemingwayand Brian Stack!
Every day! WTF is Smigel doing that is better than this?
Maybe Smeagol can do a podcast with Gorley and Conan can come as a guest
Monthly appearances

"people are digesting" I loved that :D
Robert Smigel's impressions (and Triumph) have brought me so much joy over the years
So much great television history is unfolded in these podcasts lately!
Yeah because it's dieing 😢😢😢😅😅
In the last year or two I've been listening, this was my favorite episode. I would stay up late on school nights to watch conans old late nite show and every triumph sketch was hilarious.
We need a 20 hour version of this interview with Robert! So much television history.
So the Little Nicky voice was just Adam doing an impression of Smigel doing an impression of Adam... 🤯🤯
Imagine if that movie with Arnold existed. We really missed out on something there.
it’s going to happen
it’s not too late
Said it before, but I think it would have been Zoolander before Zoolander existed. It would have at LEAST been a cult classic.
the great lost Jack Handy/Toonces movie...
I'm seeing an animated version

"You don't understand how funny it is!!!" - while pointing at the writer who wrote the entire piece - I am LMAO😂😂😂

just do Hans and Franz with old arnold. Totally watchable.
I think the issue is old Kevin and Dana.
Lookwell was a genius concept. I've turned so many people on to that pilot. I told Adam West that it could've been his second great role after Batman.
Adam smiled and said in his Adam West voice, "You have excellent taste."
My friend and I still yell the "JINGLE ALL THE WAY!" impression to this day.
It is impossible for me to say the name of that movie without *trying* to do the voice!
Even better when you throw “the holiday classic” in front of it.

Just watched Leo and it was fantastic! I could not help thinking Kevin Nealon was the drone😂
Lookwell WAS genius and ahead of its time! I rewatch it every once in a while, never gets old
i remember just the mouth cut out of Arnolds face watching Conan as a teenager lol - him, Bush and Saddam lmfao
Michael Jackson too, lolol
Definitely want Smiegel back in the future; great interview.
They should absolutely do this animated
S1 South Park style
Finally got around to hearing the whole episode. Made me smile throughout! Need Conan and Robert with Mike and Jeff!!!
Conan is my little pill of happiness ❤
Damn! It would be funny to do an animated film now, you can get away with so much more. Plus Arnold plays himself 😂😂 I am hoping for that.
i mean check out Leo. got away with a lot for a PG rate. i loved it as a 36 year old kid
Conan jokes about hey recording with him and Robert, reminiscing about the past four 16 hours. I want 100% love to hear that recording.
Lookwell was truly ahead of its time. It’s a shame it didn’t go to series, but as Shakespeare reminds us, “How oft the sight of means to do ill deeds makes ill deeds done!”
Okay...kind of a weird place for a Shakespeare flex but fine.
This is the best interview to date.
In the year 2000 Skynet will send Pimpbot back in time to make this movie
Should be Pumpbot
I wish they would do a cartoon of this movie, and have Arnold actually voice and him seeing what the scenes are and laughing while recording takes. He really should do this.
This is a great interview 😂😂😂😂
Triumph the insult comic dog is one of my fav characters ever to hit a tv screen
Hans and Franz!!!!!! Yes. Americans are depressed by politics and we need a Hans and Franz movie to snap out of our funk.
#RacistToAustrians
Don't screen stuff after lunch - The more you know...🤔
Man the Adam West pilot idea sounds amazing.
No AI. It would be so funnier to do it now with them older.
Leo is great. My kids loved it and I enjoyed the heck out of it.
WHAT? TOONCES?!
Now I’m dying to know what the third impression he taught Adam Sandler was 🥲
Honestly, a Hanz and Franz movie NOW with everyone old, would probably sell more than the original one would have.
8:54 Is that the guy who Adam's imitating in Leo?

Older Hans and Franz as a documentary would be fire
An animated Hans and Franz would be incredible
"Yes, it's a veritable force down there."
Smigel needs to be at the next inside Conan early years with Jeff Ross hour longs they’ve been doing!
You should make a movie about trying to make the Hanz and Franz movie years later
Thats actually an absolutely fantastic idea. I hope someone with influence and power sees your comment. Someone sort of like a barbarian.
Full episode videos plz :(
Adams voice in Leo reminds me a bit of the old man from Eight Crazy Nights.
Hans and Franz animation version of that script needs to happen!
Considering the Dr Freeze performance from Arnold, I think he got ti make that movie
Funny thing is that there was probably better chance of getting green lit after lunch, judges tend to sentence harder before lunch than when they have eaten.
"ehhhhhIIIIIIIII DUNNO, I THINK WE GOTTA....RED LINE THIS THING"
Classic Sandler.
…aaaand, I love you (Robert Smigel).
It would be an amazing animated movie.
I could listen to 15 hours
I watched Leo because of this podcast... It was great and my kids loved it too!
Leo was great, Robert you're amazing and a huge part of shaping my sense of humor. ❤
Love you Conee ! Bring the beard back bro ! Lol. And honestly , Thankyou Robert. What a legend. I admire you all so much.
Adam you thief! I always knew u were a hack!! 🤣 jk love u Sandman
Hey Connie!
Connie is a woman’s name. Maybe you meany Coney.
People are digesting got me good

Jingle All Da Way!!
Smash holiday classic!!
I've seen Lookwell and I thought it should have been picked up. That and Heatvision and Jack.
I hope they do make that movie
True natural Chill Chum right there 👍
I wrecked my car when I had a seizure and my friends supported me by giving me rides but calling me Toonces (driving, but not very well).
I was listening to this part while boarding a bus, it was so hard not to burst out laughing. I think the lady in front of me noticed because she gave me suspicious looks. 😅
4:38 you hear that genshin devs?
I know I can listen to the full podcast on Spotify and other sights, but where can I find the full podcast on video like this?
Good lord, Robert Smigel is a Matt Gourley clone or the other way around.. With those hats, the glasses, the scruffy grey beard, I seriously couldn't tell who I was looking at when I first ran the video.
The whole time they're doing this voice all I can see is Teddy from Bob's Burgers.
Make Hans and Franz anamated; voice act it.
Was i the only one who heard the old guy from 8 crazy nights just less high pitched?
Does Conan still do normal late night shows?
No..
Unless you consider him standing on the street corner screaming at traffic lights a "show".
He never did a `normal` show.
That was like 10 stories in 10 minutes
Lookwell is a masterpiece
Come on you guys can make an animation Hans and Frans
the sense I've always gotten of Bernie Brillstein, he's very boisterous and animated, like a what if Harvey Weinstein but w/o all the sexual harrassment baggage
I Love robert,. in some ways i think he saved my life
They can't make a movie, but they can make a Hanz and Franz cartoon no? :)
Why not do it now? People age. I wanna see it!
Leo is awesome
Bring back Final Space
Wait a minute! I'm ten minutes past a huge meal, and I still find this funny - does that mean I'm NOT digesting? Is this a new weight-loss method?? Or is it about to become the world's worst case of constipation?
Conan's Sandler suddenly turned into Gilbert Godfrey.
Make it a cartoon movie.
It's sad to see my favorite comedian with Sandler.
I know of Bernie Brillstein because he was John Belushi's manager.
Hated sandler.. but man did it blow my mind how he just exploded in money later
Arnold has a Son!!!!
Three of them
Dude get Larry Charles to direct.
You gonna tip the clocks?
Why not do an animated Hans and Franz?
Imagine how many denim coats are in Conan’s closet.
