Bro what the mk4 was already out of production by the time the fast and the furious came out. All the hero cars in that movie were out of production or not not even available in the states. You ai is broken
If fast and furious never came out the supra would be some regular old sports car you can get for less than 5k Probably would also lack with aftermarket support since it wouldn’t have been as popular.
Nah not a chance. The supra was already respected in car circles, before fast and furious. There’s quite a few 276hp 90’s JDM cars that fetch a high price these days, that weren’t in the movies. It’s largely to do with the fact that the engines can be tuned to insane numbers, because the engine blocks are apparently solid as stock, so can handle some big upgrades being bolted on, without having to replace the actual engine itself, meaning people could make 1000bhp supras for relatively little money, certainly less than the cost of lambos etc. Them being popular and respected in racing and tuning circles, is the reason why the guy in charge of sourcing the hero cars in fast and furious, had a tuned supra, which caught the eye of one of the directors or something. And they wanted it to be one of the cars. No doubt F and F increased its popularity. But even without that, there’d still be plenty of tuned supras fetching decent money these days
I think people blame fast and furious too much' sure everyone remember the hero car but it didn't really affect the hype much until 15 years after the movie
hybrid genx/millennial here, used mk4 supras were under $20, sometimes $15k back in the 2000s, you could own one working at a gas station, people just do not realize how much better the economy was back then

It wasn’t a flop. At the time, it was too expensive and, Toyota, didn’t have the “brand” recognition that it has today. The mk4 was the car to change that and put their sports car on the map in the U.S. in a serious way. The prior 3 generations weren’t engineered nearly as well as the 4 which is why they hardly get mentioned. Everyone has to start somewhere.
The reason it didnt sell well was the price. A turbo adjusted for inflation would have been around 100k today. People were buying actual luxury/performance cars for that price. Not to mention 3000GT and 300ZX were legitimate competitors.
I'm an Indian, and yes , most of the people on yt also 'so called gamers' and 'so called car and bike enthusiasts ' don't know a damn about em. Pretty sad to know that you know... Only some actual car enthusiasts and car news are out here.
I think part of the reason that the Supra didn't sell well was because at that time people were more interested in the Viper and the Vette. The Japanese cars I saw driving around a lot back then were Mitsubishi Eclipse and 3000 GT, plus the usual Honda Civics and Mazda Miatas.

No, not exactly. That Supra stock is not all that amazing looking to be fair. But when someone puts aftermarket front bumpers and hoods it starts looking cool. As long as they don’t over do it.
You can still get “affordable” mk4’s, turbo manual hard top left hand drive is most valuable, automatic T-top non turbo are more common and around 20-40k
It didn't sell because it cost 30k back in the 90's that's like 100k now. Trust me, we wanted it, but the fan base for this car was too young to afford it.
Barely.. it's a 30 year old car, I would say 40k for a very well maintained stock supra with ok mileage. The ones going for like 80k to 100k today, are worth maybe 25k on a good day.. the owner barely knows what tunes are on there (the owner is like 21), mileage is sky high and gearbox is about to go any minute since that dumbass kid can't drive a manual.
Sorry what? You talking about some fake 900 hp Charger from the 60's? A black one that raced the MK4 in the 1st F&F? Or are you talking about the Chargers that where out in every god damn F&F after Fast 5? No movie needed? Bruh...
I drove the mk4 Supra before it was launched. Its the only car I ever had before launch. I had a white turbocharged manual as a company car in 1993. The car was used for demonstration but I still remember it. I never thought it would ever be as desirable as its become. I had the previous supra but not the shape in this video as well. They used to eat tyres.
I want people to realize a 30 year old car WILL need maintenance no matter the condition, if it’s low mileage you’re still going to have to re seal the whole drivetrain, do all of the bushings because the rubber ones have rotted out, and if it’s high mileage, the engine will have wear and tear no matter how strong it is, it will have a lot of heat cycles, it’ll be dirty, either way you would need to spend a lot more just to fix the damn thing to get it to be modifiable
If I remember correctly they were expensive even adjusted for 90s economy. Similar vehicles if the time with literally half the price were a better option, so fnf definitely saved it
By the late 1990s, sales of all sport coupes were declining in North America. Furthermore, a stronger yen pushed prices up in markets outside Japan.[36] The Supra was withdrawn from the Canadian market in 1996 and the US in 1998. The Turbo was not available in 1998 in California Air Resources Board (CARB) states. Production continued in Japan until August 2002, ceasing owing to restrictive emission standards.
It’s pretty easy to see why you wouldn’t buy a brand new stock one when it originally came out. They look pretty bland before heavy modifying, and they were about $40k (before inflation) when it came out. Obviously if you really liked this it’s one thing, but I doubt some would’ve bought this over other GT cars in similar price range at the time.
That’s not true. People were buying and modding these cars before the fast and furious came out. That’s why the fast and furious used the Supra in the first place. This car was already a popular choice because it was one of the few turbo cars that could hang with a v8. Only thing that movie did was make the price of a used one sky rocket.
If having the choice of any 2 or 3 90's Japanese cars, I'd go for the R33 Skyline 2 door (doesn't have to be the GTR) and the MR2 mk2. And if i can have a 3rd, it's either the S2000 or the MX5 mk2. Preferably stock.

@ddoubleg If not overrated, then they're overhyped. The only reason they're popular is because there was one in The Fast and The Furious. Then kids watching the movie misinterpreted it and thought you could get them like that stock. Those kids grew up to be the people who spent all their college funds importing one then realizing it wasn't worth it.

That MK2 is so sexy though. I love the old boxed out designs.
Bro what the mk4 was already out of production by the time the fast and the furious came out. All the hero cars in that movie were out of production or not not even available in the states. You ai is broken
If fast and furious never came out the supra would be some regular old sports car you can get for less than 5k
Probably would also lack with aftermarket support since it wouldn’t have been as popular.
I think people blame fast and furious too much'
sure everyone remember the hero car but it didn't really affect the hype much until 15 years after the movie

Sadly the Mk5 followed the Mk4 in this way as it is ending production due to poor sales rest in peace Mk5 🫡
MK4's are ugly, only reason they're so expensive is because of how overated they are
It wasn’t a flop. Everyone has to start somewhere.
only reason it didn't sell well because it was expensive
it was never expensive. The price was risen due to the fact of the potential that it had with modifications
The reason it didnt sell well was the price. A turbo adjusted for inflation would have been around 100k today. People were buying actual luxury/performance cars for that price. Not to mention 3000GT and 300ZX were legitimate competitors.
bro social media made me hate the supra mk4 i swear its the toy of indians or sigma kids now

Like, tell me your all salty and upset because now you can’t afford one, only thing left to do is jump on the hate wagon 😂
Yeah, its just stupid that the cars value went up that much because of a bunch of 12 year olds saying ,a supra is faster than that' to EVERY car they see. Now the 2nd problem is that other good jdm shitboxes also rise up in value because of the supra and the r34
It's not really hate when you look at how hyped it is, i used to see often for 5k-7k late 2000s and mk3 for way less, heck the first car that i looked at when working part time highschool at mcds was an mk3 for $1.3k. they were beaters. the only jdm i think that worth is the nsx
I don’t know about sales figures but I know the car culture loved it immediately and all the car magazines went nuts over it, comparing it to Porsche and Ferrari

Scatch that, the skyline is *absolutely* more popular as they've got 3 generations all hyped up to the max, plus the R35 GTR which is heavily overrated, while the Supra is only really the MK4 that anyone cares about, and a new BMW with a Toyota badge
LS swaps are so over the moon common I don't know how you're going to use it as an example when talking about the 2JZ being overrated. The Corvette is lightyears more popular and overrated in America.

No, not exactly. The supra mk4 was already famous in Japan in the 90s, because a couple of Japanese mechanics discovered that if you took weight off the body and boosted the engine with turbos, an intercooler system or increasing the engine with more liters you could have a ridiculous amount of power
The Supra has to be one of the ugliest more overrated cars made

I want people to realize a 30 year old car WILL need maintenance no matter the condition, if it’s low mileage you’re still going to have to re seal the whole drivetrain, do all of the bushings because the rubber ones have rotted out, and if it’s high mileage, the engine will have wear and tear no matter how strong it is, it will have a lot of heat cycles, it’ll be dirty, either way you would need to spend a lot more just to fix the damn thing to get it to be modifiable
Not worth over 100k
The price only went up so high because it didn't sell a lot of cars in the US

Supras are barely 80k anymore for jdm manuals. 40-65k seems to been on average for sz/rz. Hardly worth 100k
The supra was cool before fast and furious, it just got more recognized by kids at that point.
Thank god for Supras and R34s. Kept the cringe away from RX-7s.

At least now it's worth something and it's more than just a boat with a good engine.
Nah when they first showed the orange Supra, was the day the Supra was ruined.
That’s not true. People were buying and modding these cars before the fast and furious came out. That’s why the fast and furious used the Supra in the first place. This car was already a popular choice because it was one of the few turbo cars that could hang with a v8. Only thing that movie did was make the price of a used one sky rocket.
It didn’t change the number sold.. it changed car culture and created a fallowing for this car
