Mixing Engineer Dave Pensado of Pensado's Place teaches you how to do some unique delay techniques on lead vocals in the 35th edition of "Into The Lair".
If you want to get a quarter note delay time just divide 60,000 by the bpm. Divide that number by 2 to get the 8th note and again for 16th and again for 32nd
Awesome Video Dave! The easiest way I find to find the delay and reverb times is to switch session to grid mode, select which grid you want, (1/2 1/4 etc.). then make a selection on the grid of that value. Change selection to show time in minutes and seconds. Hope this helps someone and keep blessing the next generation with your knowledge.
Mr. Pensado, although I am not the biggest ProTools fan (non-HD that is), I have gained immense knowledge and some good understanding of your lessons. It has made me a much, much better engineer and mixer. Thank you considerably!!
hi Dave. the easiest way to find the delay time is dividing 7500/bpm = 1/32 . for example: you said 81 was the bpm. so 7500/81=92.592,thats 1/32, multiply by 2 to get 1/16(185), multiply by 2 to get 1/8(370),etc... thats why 370 = 1/8. then if you need the triplets multiply by 0.667 or the dotted multiply by 1.5 so 1/8 triplet is: 370 x 0.667 = 246 1/8 dotted is: 370 x 1.5 = 555
Thanks again Dave - I always learn something interesting from your videos. I think I could actually learn something from just sitting and watching you breathe - haha
I just finished watching all of your ITL's (that I didn't watch before). it took a me few weeks but it was very rewarding nonetheless. Though I was wondering if you were planning to talk more about sends. I use Aux tracks mostly but as for sends I don't really know how to use it besides bussing a kick for sidechaining purposes... I notice you use it for delays and reverbs but I don't really get the concept...
Wich way and wich values you would prefer you for rap... infact of reverb and delay. ? You have chosen the reverb on the channel for delay ? Or both seperated ? Thx for your Video and hope for an answer... ;)
It’s helps separate the vocal from the track. Layered reverb and delay helps subconsciously push the vocal in front of the music. Almost All vocals have reverb and delay on them if they were mixed by a professional.
Hi ! I need some help here, guyz, cause I don't use the same DAW. Did he put reverb only to the ping pong delay - it sounded sweet. In cubase I would putthe reverb on the track of echo boy ping pong . Thanks in advance for your help.
+LetMeDieLord Lo-fi comes in a pack called D-Fi by Avid and comes standard with Pro Tools and Pro Tools HD. Dave is using an older version if I'm not mistaken but I think the newer version just looks nicer. IF you don't own Pro Tools then try a plugin by Plug & Mix called Lo Fi. It does the same thing and has a lovely sound.
+Tomba Leone ..yeah, get back in time to where the loudness war hadn't started yet - and prevent it from ever happening! (That wouldn't include destroying Cyberdyne though..) But wait.. that might cause Steven Slate to never come up with the FG-X!! Uurgh.. I reckon he better keep on mixing than building the time machine ;)
+Deep Society ...it's called a hook my friend...that may not mean much to you but to a genuine musician, its the foundation of commercial songwriting, particularly "hit-single writing"...nothing major though, just the most important part of the song

Finally someone who talks about stuff that cannot be found in books n such. Very informative and inspiring, thank you so much mr. Pensado!
You just gave us a whole new pallette of color ideas!!
What a beautiful song as well. I'm off to purchase.

man i feel like no matter where i am or will be in my career i will watch your videos aha very helpful always!!
Great Vid thanks Dave! Greetings from Barbados!
I rarely use stereo ping-pong, but I think I'm gonna use it more now! The reverb on your delay sounded great...
hi Dave.
the easiest way to find the delay time is dividing 7500/bpm = 1/32 .
for example: you said 81 was the bpm.
so 7500/81=92.592,thats 1/32, multiply by 2 to get 1/16(185), multiply by 2 to get 1/8(370),etc...
thats why 370 = 1/8.
then if you need the triplets multiply by 0.667
or the dotted multiply by 1.5
so 1/8 triplet is: 370 x 0.667 = 246
1/8 dotted is: 370 x 1.5 = 555
Ivan Vera yes very easy mental math
Said this elsewhere too, but the EASIEST way to find ms is to ask Siri! "How many milliseconds is 81 beats per minute?"
THank you Mr. Pensado!
Thank you, Dave! 🙂

love this show!
Loquat - Monsters. Great work!
"Hey guys, I was cruisin around Gearslutz..." .......BEST. INTRODUCTION. EVER.
Yeah haha
Make more of these types of videos!

This is what music is about!!!!
This is great!
Big up for MusicMath sw... most helpful tool...
Thanks Dave
@Marcus Henderson - because Dave sends nearly everything to a corresponding Aux, then submix, then print, etc. Watch ITL #15 and you'll get it.
That would be cool in the future if you put the link to the track you are using. Excellent though subscribed.
Thanks a lot!
Hahaha! My cat got all turned on by the vocal :D
Good job Dave ;)
Very cool !
I really like the vibe of the song. How do you spell the band ? Thx
One very important question is there a list? and does it get shorter?
Dave, thanks for the wonderful video. If someone could help me with this, is the slap delay effect running on mono or stereo? TIA!
Wich way and wich values you would prefer you for rap... infact of reverb and delay. ?

What does this kind of delay do for leads? I don't hear much repeating(feedback) is it just adding color? Thank you
Yep. Just a bit of color. He’s using it all really subtle, just enough to blend it into the song

Loquat
Found it
from the previous episode, i thought this one would continue mid-side techniques (?)
Genial ¡¡¡¡¡¡
Dude, what's the name of the song? That vocal melody is killer!
What delay is this? sounds awesome.
love you ;)
great
thanxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx i liked
what did dave say the band's name was i heard it as lowkwatt? am trying to find it online???
ITL rocks!
What screen recording software do you use?
How can you just focus on the delay and not the lead vocal?
what is the purpose of a limiter on a Aux bus? And when you say "roll off" are you "rolling off" the top end or low end frequencies?
Dave uses Auxiliary tracks in place of inserts and because it’s easy to set up a template and just import the audio and route it to aux tracks.
Yay
what's the name of the song?
So put a delay on the delay?
who's that artist?? I really like the song
Hi ! I need some help here, guyz, cause I don't use the same DAW. Did he put reverb only to the ping pong delay - it sounded sweet. In cubase I would putthe reverb on the track of echo boy ping pong . Thanks in advance for your help.
Try it both ways!
Why did you nugde the delay 1 ms ?
who is the artist singing?
eeeeeeeeee there's, a list. It doesn't get shorter. It's stays, afiiixed
can anybody tell me, what the name of the Lo-Fi plugin is and where to find it? Thx

+Byron Marais ..thanks! i really didn't know about the plug & mix one!
I noticed the channels are not clipping. Was this intentional? Did you consider this particular song or section would not benefit from the coloring?
Stop building music Dave ! You own the domain allready. Start building a time machine....you probable succeed.....
One of those songs u actually havent heard before but feels like u heard it already 1000 times. Annoying, generic music
+Deep Society ...it's called a hook my friend...that may not mean much to you but to a genuine musician, its the foundation of commercial songwriting, particularly "hit-single writing"...nothing major though, just the most important part of the song
