I have seen this video numerous times, it just gets me hyped each time I see it. But let's think about the band's perspective, looking out and see all of these people who came to see you!! Man what an exhilaration
The record company that had Metallica in their stable saw a great opportunity when Russia opened up in 1990. So in 1991, they sent three of their bands over there to play...Pantera, Metallica and closed with AC/DC. There were indeed a million or more people there. First heavy metal and rock allowed in Russia. Military helicopters. At first, so,diners were beating the audience. They didn’t know how to deal with such a crowd. They had to negotiate with the military: They asked the military to hold back, and then they asked the crowd to be more well behaved so the concert could continue. These people had been listening to rock and metal in secret for years, because you could be punished for doing so. And these was the first time they could let lose.
The Black Crows were also there. This was not the first rock concert, Motley Crue and Bon Jovi performed there sometime soon before this concert so it wasn't the first but the first heavy metal concert when you consider Pantera and Metallica.
You should listen to Harvester of sorrow from same show, if you want to see those soldiers at this concert go totally crazy!! no doubt the intresting thing from this show is the audience, and the fact they played in Russia for the 1st time, heta to say it Metallica, but this show makes the music go 2nd, and the atmosphere as the intresting part..
It is a number someone on RUclips said once now all of a sudden that became the number. They even have it on Wikipedia, can you believe that? I never trust Wikipedia.
It wasn't the first time. In 1989 they had a special concert called the Moscow Music Peace Festival at the Lenin Stadium in front of 100,000 people. At this concert were Bon Jovi, Skid Row, Cinderella, Scorpions, Motley Crue, Ozzy Osbourne and a local Russian band just after the fall of the Soviet Union. Check it out you should be able to find all the band performances on youtube.
And here we are you back in business, biggest crowd ever,1.285 million people,,I remember waiting 6 hours for the record store to open at midnight to get the black album and went to the first show which wasnt long after and everybody knew every word to every song on that album
Hey hey... missed you man (also invisible Joey😉) This song is one of the songs that got me into heavier music... actually the whole black album did it for me... Some history: the Soviet Union ended on December 1991, this concert was in August. There was 1.6M people there in the first open air concert allowed... it was part of the Monsters of Rock festival, other bands to perform were AC/DC, Metallica, Pantera and two other bands... forgot the names... sorry Thank you for the reaction... gave me chills all over
I like your reaction (wish we could all travel back in time and join that massive crowd). At first I felt like the sound of that performance was a bit muffled in this video, but it actually sounds heavier (/better) than the original sound.
I heard an interview with James Hetfield and he said he heard it was more like around 500,000 there. But who really knows, this was the Monsters of Rock show. I do know there was not an official count. It was in an airfield. Pantera were there along with ACDC, a local Russian band and the Black Crows. It was definitely epic!!!
It was like 500,000 initially but people continued to come. It was held outside in an airfield. People just kept coming and they stopped counting at like 1.6 million.
cool reactions on your video's have just watched quite a few of them. Another song/band that will blow your mind if you do not already know them is JINJER - Pisces (Live Session). For many music reactors this is a metal rite of passage, listen at your own risk...also would be cool to see you react to some sabaton...keep up the cool work.
1.6 Million people....and this is only 3rd on the all time list of crowds at an open air concert. #1 is Rod Stewart at Copacabana Beach in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil with a crowd of 3.5 Million in 1994. #2 was Jean Michel Jarre in 1997 also in Russia, like that Metallica show, with 3.5 Million.
And that's not a confederate flag. If you look at it, it has an emblem in the middle. I forget which country it is. But there are also flags from USA, Britain, Ukraine, etc in that same area. Music bringing countries together in Peace.
It is not just the fact of being able to 'see an American band', but the reality that just a few years earlier those people in the audience would have been harassed by the authorities for being metal heads and would likely have been carted off to jail if they managed to just own a record or two..... then they were free. We'd best appreciate that, as it looks as though we are currently headed in the opposite direction, in the West!
Bro, you need to react to this artist. She just got signed and dropped her original song last month. She just turned 15 and you'll be blown away! The song is about her grandpa who recently passed and she wrote it to help anyone going through the loss of someone. Here's a link to her performing it live in studio: ruclips.net/video/3KxvwuZ7oEM/видео.html And if you like her you need to check out her version of Bohemian Rapsody on AGT Champions back when she was 13.
There are varying stories about how many people were there and how many people died. But it was obviously too many sad to say. Glad to say I wasn't there. And supposedly the band were terrified at times. Cheers!

They could only get bootleg music before the fall of communism. A lot of bootlegging was going on evidently. Right before this we saw people dying on tv every night fighting for their freedom. There’s a longer video with the drummer talking to people whose families died and shows footage of the fighting. So it was so amazing to see. Also growing up during the Cold War as Americans there was always the threat of nuclear war. We didn’t have internet so this was really our first opportunity to see the people of Russia. There was no animosity between us and the people of Russia just the governments.
Rebel flag, confederate flag looks completely different. These people had been fighting/rebelling communism, This was their first taste of western music.
Well hi there dude. Helene here. Haven’t seen you for a bit. How you doin’? This is good choice. Hey listen, can you get Joey to “let you” listen to SORROW by Pink Floyd live Pulse tour? You will never hear anything like it, I guarantee you.
Ye, quite impressive indeed. Very interesting choice of performance. Symbolic in many ways. Quite bitter when you consider that only a decade after they unleashed the shackles of Soviet Communism they fell prey to a Sandman sprinkle sand in their eyes. And then this confederate flag linking this to the Sandman that recently sprinkled his dust in the lands of the Star-spangled banner, home of Metallica. I also experience difficulties fully appreciating good music when there's that smell of (overwhelming) commercial success attached to it. Maybe some snobby thingie I guess. :^)
The facts are that now, 30 years later, there are only 4 cities in the U.S. with a population larger than that concert. And this concert is not a record. The record concert in Russia had twice as many people in attendance.

All the string instruments were falling out of tune, they'd gotten heat cycled and dry on the flight over and didn't have time to properly acclimate. Coming off the pause in Harvester, Lars nearly sliced his thumb to the bone on the first hit. The red lighting tint hides that he's flinging blood everywhere until the song ends, and there's no flourish... he drops sticks, jumps up and runs backstage.
