This Locomotive Sir Nigel Greasley Is Now Part Of The National Collection Or The National Railway Museum In York In Yorkshire. Thanks Sam'sTrains Mate. X
Very close but not quite. Sir Nigel is currently at the Railway Museum workshop, but has its own society and its "home" is at the North Yorkshire Moors Railway. The late Roger Barker and his team worked very hard to get it's last boiler ticket and it's currently working towards its next one. Reason that the NRM don't have much say in its preservation is because the loco was privately saved during the 60s (the National Collection already had Mallard). The loco will continue to wear darker blue "pyjamas" & 60007, not the 4498 LNER garter blue. I had the privilege of riding behind it in 2015, some 40 years after seeing it at the Shildon cavalcade in 1975 when it was still 4498...... My favourite A4 and probably my ultimate favourite of all
Wow, didn’t know sir Nigel gresley was ever in that blue. Always thought it was just the dark blue! Good video, I love the A4’s especially the dominion of Canada! Great video, good work :) 💪
I've looked up the Silver Link and found out that a few more of the early A4s were also painted in Silver and also had matching streamlined Silver coaches that were a part of a train called the Silver Jubilee. HIGHLY recommend getting any of the early Silver A4s and any of those Jubilee coaches if you can manage to find them.
Hi Alex, yeah you're bang on - Silver link is probably the most famous A4 in silver, though if you check out a guy called 'Liverton Simon' his channel shows a set of 4 (I think) all in that livery! Here's the link either way: ruclips.net/video/3k21CTxFIJg/видео.html All the best mate, Sam :)
6:06 Wow it's pretty nice to see some figurines inside a model steam locomotive. I never seen you have figurines in your locomotive cabs but this sure looks brilliant especially for a serious modeler with loves to put figurines on his layout and the scenery and inside the cab of tender locomotives. :D
Sir Nigel Gresley is partly being overhauled in Llangollen Railway Workshops at this moment in time. My favourite A4 is probably Mallard, but she doesn't steal the show in the same way as Broome Manor does. The chime whistle of an A4 is nice to listen to; pity Gadwall is the only A4 model you've got with TTS sound. But we can't have everything we might want.
even though it's a seperate model on it's own.. the full trainset would be called the blue streak which is hornby no. (R682) and by looking at the way it's boxed up and especially the wiring.. the trainset itself looks like it was made in either the 1970's or 80's..
Wow its pretty cool to have a LNER A4 to be named after a person who created the class of locomotives which is Sir Nigel Gresley. :P I'd imagine him driving the train or be the conductor in the passenger cars. ;)
I bought the hornby railroad DCC ready mallard in blue today. It is a very good runner and very good at slow speeds. For some reason only the front buffers are sprung.
I'm surprised that photo of Gadwell badly damaged doesn't appear in an A4 Pacific book I have, and I've never come across that photo online. I'm not sure about the nameplate on that Hornby model the lettering doesn't look right (the plate looks too wider compared to the letters and the plate sticks out too much). I have N gauge model of Mallard in blue, but for some reason the model I have doesn't have the full valances (skirting I think it's called) that Mallard has when in that colour livery. I think the only time Mallard never had valances was when it was green. Why the company (I presume Graham Farish) who built the model didn't show it as it should be I don't know. And for some reason Hornby sell a blue version of the Flying Scotsman, but since when has the Flying Scotsman ever been blue?.
Wow A4's thanks Sam mate great to see them. Working on getting more of them for my fleet I have Mallard always pride of p;ace on my railway great videos Sam Merry Christmas to you and yours :)
+Stuart JohnModels Thanks mate, the A4s are fantastic, and hornby make a fabulous mallard! Thanks again as always, and merry Christmas to you too! Cheers, Sam
Joand So is my last week off and I have you all right now I wanna e I will have to have a look at it and then I will have to get some sleep and then I will have to get some stuff for my bed 🛏 was a time
Great video I love the A4, I am unsure what the cover thing is called but Gresley designed the A4 class like that as it stopped air getting to the wheels which slowed it down, it helped it run as fast as it did and eventually break the World Steam Record. David :)
+David's Model Trains Ah yes, I presumed it must be something to do with the streamlining - I wonder if it actually made a difference! Thanks again, Sam :)
Sam'sTrains I have noticed that when looking at pictures of them, I guess at the time people thought that it didn't do anything but today some trains have got a similar design, at least the wheels are partially covered on some HSTs to make the go faster. David :)
The valances were removed during WW2 to both ease maintenance and help the war effort by giving valuable steel for re-use. As for overall effect, we really don't know - after all, 60007 ran up to 112mph in 1959 in her post-war condition. No idea what kind of speed she'd have made had not Bill Hoole been given the 112 as a strict maximum by the authorities!
Hi Sam, excellent video and loco, I personally like the A4's. I have just purchased the Sparrow Hark, which brings my A4's to 4, Gadwell, Silver Fox, Sparrow Hark and the Mallard. Your Sir Nigel Gresley looks the business, as does your others...Simon
Hi Sam, you will have to excuse my ignorance, I have rally no idea about livery at the moment, its the Hornby R3174 with three coaches with added DCC A4 sound. One day I may know as much as you and John, I hope...Simon
+Liverton -Simon I see, its the silver one! And don't worry mate, I'm far more ignorant than you are! I just wondering if it was the green one or the silver one, that's all! It looks like a lovely set! :) Cheers, Sam
Hi Sam, I’ve picked up one of these but am having problems with the motorised tender. The driven wheels are proving a bit loose on the axles. If I press them hard enough to stay in place, the motor won’t turn. But if loosened off, they work loose very quickly in use. Got any experience of this? I can’t find anyone who can supply new wheels for this version. Glue? Loctite? I’d welcome your thoughts. Cheers 😃👍
Ahh sorry to hear that - no I haven't had this happen, maybe the wheels have been removed too many times and have grown loose... if it's the side with the insulator (non conductive side) maybe a dab of superglue will hold them in place? I'd try that! Thanks for watching, Sam :)
@@SamsTrains Cheers Sam, Well, the superglue worked a treat. Just dropped a drop onto each hub (whilst on its side) after the axle was in place and left overnight. Thanks so much for your reply. Your channel is really great.
Hey Sam, I think your model of Sir Nigel Gresley was modded by previous owner because I don't think Hornby would ever paint the cabs on their locos. Also another reason why I think it was modded is an obvious thing that sticks out like sore thumb, the trailing bogey, it's a camo color, not black like the rest of the bogeys. Its odd and it isn't something that Hornby would do or make. Not that it being modded is a bad thing, it's just when you went to the cab and windows, you thought Hornby did it.
Hi Johney, thanks for the comment! The cabs did actually come painted like that from Hornby for a while - I've got quite a few that have that, including the compound and the 8F, both from the same era! You're right about the trailing wheels though - it's a very strange on that! Thanks a lot for watching, Sam :)
This is the first time I saw this video of train models and I was fascinated by the scales can I ask where can I buy or even the website where can I view their products? Thanks and Godbless
Hi John, yes absolutely - their website is www.hornby.com - but the prices there are frightening! The best place to look is a site called Rails of Sheffield - they reliably have the best prices, just look up 00 gauge models! All the best, Sam :)
Well it was very warm but awesome best moment of my Life I spoke to the driver about hornby and he told me to do a amazing layout which I am currently working on

Mallard has been preserved in LNER blue and Sir Nigel Gresley has been preserved in early BR blue!

I saw this one in bits at York.

I February I saw Sir Nigel Gresley In bits as well
Looks like a tender drive loco with the thick connecting rod out of scale
Yeah they were pretty thick in those days!

I have to say that I prefer her in her current livery!!
haha that's okay mate - very much fair enough! :3

6:45 They are called Valances

valances covered the driving wheel I'm talking about the connecting rod!

change the armiture to a 5 pole if it is a 3 pole or use a CD motor and use the spare parts on a super bad ringfeild motor
That's true! I have actually done that with this one now!
