I really like the models! The only gripe I have about the models that they don't have the side skirts as they are in their 1930s condition.
Ahh yes you’re right actually, that is strange! :D
Hello Sam when Triang took over the production of Hornby DoublO the early boxes we’re labelled Triang Wrenn untill Wrenn took over the production of the Hornby Doubl0 range.. My wife and I had three model shops it was always nice to meet Mr and Mrs Wrenn at the annual Ears co
Hello Sam when Triang took over the production of Hornby Doubl0 the early boxes had Triang Wrenn on the boxes. Later when Wrenn took over the production the boxes dropped the Triang. Mi wife and I had three model shops and Wrenn was all ways a part of our stock .We used to visit the annual toy fair at Earls Court it was always nice to visit the Wrenn stand as it was run by Mr and mrs Wrenn a proper family business.
I just bought my first Hornby model train. It an LNER N2. I'm super excited about getting into the hobby. Thanks for making these videos, Sam. They're very informative and inspiring.
Oh wow awesome - the N2s are lovely looking things too - enjoy her! That's no problem - It's always well worth it when people like you enjoy them!
All the best,
Sam :)
The blue that the Mallard is painted is called LNER garter blue
That's very true! Thanks for the info!
Cheers,
Sam :)
You are choosing the best coaches. Really. Mallard with those red-cream coaches and Golden Eagle with those LNER coaches💙💚
From what I remember Hornby took over the Hornby Doubl0 products and in the early days and the boxes were printed with Hornby Wrenn untill production was took over the production
People say they are old because they are Dublo wrenn bought it off Hornby before they were bought by triang they just re did the motors so they ran better. Excellent video!
haha yeah you're right - the design certainly dates back quite some!!
Thanks for watching - Sam :)

Hi...great nostalgic review....nice work. I had a Wrenn A4 (Sir Nigel Gresley) back circa 1971. It was Garter Blue with the valances. I believe however that the motor was in the tender........I remember it being a not so good runner. (but we're going back a fair way here.....) I think it cost about five pounds at the time...!
Thanks very much Mark - ahh very nice - I don't think Wrenn ever made a tender driven one - could it have been a Hornby, or a trix or something??
Thanks for watching, Sam :)
Finally! A blue Mallard! I've seen the Green model, and now a BLUE one! Her proper color if you ask me.
haha, thanks! Yeah the blue is definitely the 'proper' colour for Mallard! :D
Thanks for watching,
Sam :)
green on loco looks different to tender green
love it
nice models
arp
Hi Ade! The two greens are actually identical - it's just painted onto metal for the loco, and plastic for the tender... so the light shines of them differently!
Glad you liked them anyway - thought they'd be your cup of tea!
Cheers mate,
Sam :)
I have one of the golden eagles and it’s a lovely display piece
hornby owned wrenn for a time in the 70's. i remember wrenn models in the hornby catalogue! sad they dont make em anymore
Ah yeah I remember reading about that - they became tri-ang/Wrenn didn't they? Yeah it's a real shame, but luckily there's still plenty about!
Cheers,
Sam :)
smashing collection there sam. the locos look beautiful .Cheers matt
Thanks very much Matt, really glad you liked the locos, they're really some of my favorites - lots more Wrenn to come though, if you're interested!
Cheers,
Sam :)
+Sam'sTrains yes they are really special I don't own any myself as I've not had the opportunity to obtain any. and when I do I find them very expensive. And yes really looking forward to seeing more :-) matt
Very, very nice Sam, I am a big, big fan of the A4's, I think they are excellent locos. My mum died several months ago and just before she did she bought me the Hornby 80th Anniversary set of 4, which I will cherish...Simon
Thanks Simon - the A4s are marvelous! I remember seeing you showing your 80th Anniversary set, they were super impressive, and very precious to you I know :)
All the best mate,
Sam :)
Great locos, leave the rest for dead, will still be running in 50 yrs the Wrenns. Keep them coming Sam. Regards John from Oz.
Thanks John, yeah, they're amazing are these - and haha I hope mine still run in 50 years... if I still run too!
Cheers mate,
Sam :)
them wrenn A4 s are just as stunning at the hornby ones, brilliant models and a brilliant review, i really enjoyed it also i think i saw 5 A4s
Thanks Jae, I think so too - I really love them, they're some of my best pullers!
Cheers,
Sam :)
Super video and 2 cracking locos. They look right at home on your layout. You can't beat an A4 Pacific.
Thanks Keith - there's nothing like a couple of Wrenn A4s - best manufacturer and probably the best class too!
Cheers mate,
Sam :)
Can't resist painting on it
haha yeah me too! ;D
super models Sam ! my first loco was a green Mallard from my dad in about 1960,think it was Hornby, always had a soft spot for them! great video dave
Thanks Dave, glad you like them! If it was 1960, it's likely that it was Wrenn/Dublo since Hornby didn't do one until much later (I think!) Either way, thanks very much for watching and the support,
Cheers mate,
Sam :)
wish id kept it !! don't we all ?!!
haha yeah, very true mate :)
One day someone will make models of the streamlined B17's, which I believe were called East Anglian and City of London. The Wrenn models do have a certain presence even if they aren't the best detailed.
That would be excellent Garry - definitely something I would buy! :D
Thanks for watching, Sam :)
Thanks Sam...A great review and running session on two fantastic looking locomotives ...Good stuff ..Des ..
Thanks a lot Des, really glad you liked them - I really love running them!
All the best,
Sam :)
Hi Sam
I was just wondering, I run DC but does DCC make running better/ quieter?
thanks, custard
Hi mate - no DCC won't make locos run better! Though some DC controllers are better than others - the HM2000 though runs just as good as DCC!
All the best mate,
Sam :)
The Streaks are what I like, nice vid.
Also I see that they're in the post-war shape, without the skirts, a bit inaccurate but can't complain, it's a Wrenn.
Yeah me too mate - it really is a brilliant livery! You're right though - they should have the covers on in that livery, but maybe it would have caused problems with the casting? Either that, or they just did it in that livery but didn't want to change the design,
Cheers,
Sam :)
Brilliant video Sam! It's great to see some working wrenn A4s. ;)
haha thanks mate, really glad you like them... they're just like yours then?? :)
Cheers,
Sam :)
haha!
there's a hornby version of the golden eagle
Yes there is! :D
nice review. I like A4 pacifics. The A4 pacifics in the lner livery have their front running number on the buffer beam while those in br livery had it on the plate.
Thanks very much - me too! Thanks for the info as well, I didn't know that, but good to know Wrenn got that right!
Cheers mate,
Sam :)
Very nice Sam. I made it 5 A4's and 1 Bullman. David.
Thanks David - I think you're right yeah, and the bullman haha ;D
Cheers mate,
Sam :)
Great vid
Thank you! :D
lovely locos there !! great runners to ...must have some power to them -all the best :)
Thanks very much mate - yeah they're brilliant pullers, there's very little they can't manage!
Cheers,
Sam :)
Not that much of a change over the five years, just the stock has got bigger. Still using crocodile clips to connect to the track. Martin. (Thailand)
It may take a while but I'll watch the reviews eventually as I'm super busy
haha no problem Sam - really glad you want to watch them at all, thanks for the support!
All the best mate,
Sam :)
Great to see a mint Wrenn A4 , pity about the sparce layout
Thanks Manny, apologies for the layout! ;D
Thanks for watching - Sam :)
Hello Sam had to have this loco, bought it from the Uk and a wartime black , so have a few A4s , I really like them. Best of luck with your repairs , you do a good job, wish you were closer, so I could give you some work. Regards John from Oz.
Hi John, thanks very much for the comment - ooh those wartime black ones look superb - never had one though!
Thanks a lot mate - yeah sorry about that, but it is going well thanks! :D
Cheers,
Sam :)
I love mallard and I was one of a few who attended the great gathering
Yeah me too - is a fantastic locomotive! I was there too - a great event!
Cheers,
Sam :)
I Ony saw 3 a4s.
You may be right - I don't remember how many there should have been!
Thanks for watching - Sam :)
Two cracking models there Sam and a lovely review,
Just some info on the numbers on the front. The LNER (and the Southern and GWR for that matter) always painted the loco number on the front buffer beam, or on the bottom of the front streamlining in the case of the A4's and their other streamliners. (P2, W1, B17/5). The LMS however had the numbers on cast plates on the somebox doors. On Nationalisation BR tended to follow a lot of LMS practices, including the cast somebox number plates, and ex-LNER, GWR and Southern locos had the cast plates fitted from then onwards. In the case of the LNER streamliners they fitted the little 'pop up' type plate as on the model. :)
Hi Jon, thanks very much for the comment and the info! I'm not surprised BR carried on with LMS ideas - I suppose they were the most elegant of the Big Four!
All the best mate,
Sam :)
Well, as a GWR fan myself I suppose the elegance came from Mr Stainer... and he was trained at Swindon... ;)
oh i mean locos
What's the fastest mallard you have?
Hmmm, it's either this one or the Hornby railroad one - they're pretty similar actually!
All the best,
Sam :)
very nice......
Thanks very much - glad you like them! :D
Cheers,
Sam :)
That for sharing Sam, These great loco's won't be able to run wren loco's on my layout due to the coarse scale wheels, what a shame...............regards Tony
Thanks Tony, glad you liked them! You can run Wrenn on most modern track actually - Hornby & Peco set-track is just fine, but I guess there would be problems with super-fine scale track, if that's what you use?
Cheers,
Sam :)
hi Sam my track work is code 75. I was at a railway exhibition a while back and I had seen a stand full of wren loco's and rolling stock. i ask one guy about running the loco's on finsecale track. the answer I got back is I would have to change the chassis & wheels. and the rolling stock changing the wheels is no problem.so I'm not sure if i can keep the chassis and change the wheels. i don't anybody who has converted a loco for fine scale.................regards tony
I love Sir Nigel Gresley’s A4
Me too - they're awesome aren't they?? :3
Thanks for watching,
Sam :)
Sam'sTrains they are most serenely is out of all the trains you got witch one is your favorite
Both of those are fantastic. But odd they went plastic tenders! And they do look a bit Scotsman like!
Great video.
Oscar
Thanks Oscar, they are gorgeous models! I've never seen one with a metal tender, so maybe it was expensive to develop a cast one? Who knows, very strange!
All the best mate,
Sam :)
Hi Sam...................just been comparing this model against the Hornby Railroad Mallard you reviewed last year and there noticeable differences: The firebox is more pronounced on the Hornby model and the driving wheels are further apart on the Wrenn example. The Wrenn model is reminiscent of the old Hornby Dublo casting.
Do you know when the Wrenn model was manufactured? Both lovely locos nevertheless.
Best wishes..brian
Hi Brian, absolutely right - the Wrenn era was more for practical models rather than realism I think - and yeah, Wrenn inherited all of the Dublo mounds, which is why they look very similar! They did produce 2-rail locomotives though, rather than 3-rail!
Cheers again,
Sam :)
Good morning Sam. I counted 5 A4 PACIFIC'S on you layout. The score you gave the two A4 PACIFIC'S locomotives was WRONG. It should have been TWELVE OUT OF TEN. You have got the ROLEX of model railways. Pure ROLEX. Beautiful PRECISION BUILT BRITISH BASILDON CRAFTSMANSHIP. THE QUILL ♥️♥️♥️♥️♥️ You picked up two monsters there for a song. I absolutely love G R WRENN. When are you going to acquire some wrenn wagons? One of your best videos Sam, thank you 🌟🌟🌟🌟🌟🌟🐖🚄🚅
Morning Mark - well done I think that's right, good spot!! :D
Thanks for watching, Sam :)
Lovely models!
Thanks very much, glad you enjoyed them! :)
Cheers,
Sam :)
it would be cool if Hornby started to make LNER green A4s
Yeah it would actually! I think they have made one, but it's not readily available!
Cheers,
Sam :)
That model of Mallard I don't really like because it doesn't have those skirts protecting the wheels meaning I can see a little bit of wire it's like hornby was just too lazy to fill that in with clay
None of them are in the BR livery but how come the side valences are missing
Hmm - accuracy was never a goal for Wrenn - I don't think they had a tooling for the valenced version!
Happy New Year!
Sam :)
Wrenn marketed a number of Hornby Dublo models after Meccano went bust.
Yeah absolutely - and most of their range thereafter consisted of modernised Hornby Dublo toolings!
Thanks for watching,
Sam :)
Isn't that a B1 locomotive? I wonder what she's doing in the A4 running session and train spotting part. I think he's the odd one out! :P
This is the A4's time on the big screen!
haha very well spotted!! ;D
Thanks for watching - Sam :)
Sam I have an idea for a running session. You should do one for ex lner engines
That'd be great Mike - thanks for the suggestion!! :D
Thanks for watching - Sam :)
Certainly been looked after as they are in very good condition , have you come across any on DCC ......Peter .
Yeah, someone obviously took good care of them - though they don't break like the plastic ones do! And no I've never seen one on DCC, but I suppose it could be done - might be a bit tricky isolating one of the brushes though, since it's virtually in direct contact with the chassis! The 8F, Rebuilt West Country and Castle etc would be much easier though; their motors can be nicely isolated!
All the best mate,
Sam :)
Golden eagle looks like a streamlined flying scotsman
haha yeah it does - I suppose the A4 wasn't all that different to the A3/A1 really!
All the best,
Sam :)
I know most of these engines you unbox are ones you've gotten overtime, but did you mostly get them online or from local dealers?
Hi thanks for commenting! Yeah I get most of mine online, but get them locally very occasionally!
All the best,
Sam :)
Lovely. Where are you picking up these bargains?
Thanks Russell - these two were on Ebay, you can get them there far cheaper than in most shops!
Cheers mate,
Sam :)
HI it's me again just have a question do you have the Hornsby silver link set with the coaches
Hi, welcome back! No I don't have that set actually, I might try to find one some day though!
Cheers,
Sam :)
+Sam'sTrains oh I heard it's pretty rare good luck
Cheers From Massachusetts ~John
At your brilliant best as usual Sam, £50 for a Wren, you did very well there,
Regards Mark and as always "Tri-ang Forever"
Thanks Mark - yeah I was very pleased with that! The photos weren't all that good on the listing... so I guess that's why it didn't go for more!
Cheers,
Sam :)
their loss your gain, I love it when that happens, I think at times bidding is more addictive than Gambling lol,,,,
great video, I would just like to point out the unless the locomotive is LMS than the number would only be printed on the smokebox number plate if it were nationalized, if pre nationalization than the number would be painted on the buffer beam. nice review nonetheless, keep t up. keep the faith - callum
Hi Callum, thanks very much for the comment! Yeah you're right - the one of mine that has the number on the smoke-box area was in BR green, so that explains it!
Cheers mate,
Sam :)
great video!
your the best model train youtuber ever!
Thanks so much, that's really kind of you to say - glad you enjoyed the video!
Cheers mate,
Sam :)
+Sam'sTrains no problem my friend
Love it! Keep up the good work!
Thanks very much for the support mate,
All the best,
Sam :)
I feel like those wheels are a bit small, I might be going crazy, but the 6 big wheels seem to be smaller than they should be xD
I like Hornby Mallard in garter blue much better than Wrenn one!
Yeah, Garter Blue is a gorgeous livery, and the Hornby ones are much better detailed, but the Wrenn ones beat them hands down with their performance - the motors are about 4x the size lol!
All the best mate & thanks for commenting,
Sam :)
6:28 wouldnt that be its number codeing plate or some what
Yeah you're probably right about that! :D
They're very strong for 4-4-2s ;)
haha - can't argue, but yeah they are! :D
4-4-2? ; ah! took me a moment to get it.....
Hello Sam. I Will Love This Vid! So, Here Is Something. I Think That Mallard's Wheels Are Too Far Apart. But I Think That My Friend Dominic Can See This!
Cheers, Andy.
And Same On Golden Eagle.
And I'm Sad That Golden Eagle Is Scrapped :(
Hi Andy, yes you could be right there actually - Wrenn didn't really focus too much on accuracy, and preferred to build good robust models - realism was never their strong suit, so you could well be right!
Thanks for watching,
Sam :)
the a4 is my second favorite my first is the n2
Oh cool - an interesting choice, the N2 are very nice - and I've got a couple of Wrenn ones to show too actually!
Cheers,
Sam :)
cant wait to see them!
Could you supply a smoke generator in this locomotive?
Hi Koby! That's not something that I personally offer, but yes I believe it could easily be done! :D
Thanks for watching,
Sam :)
What would you recommend?
Nice a4 Sam
Thank you! :D
.
WHAT ARE YOU DOING HERE LMAO
haha!! ;D
I've been seeing this alot on British trains here but why does it say OO/HO? We both know that's two different scale sizes. Is this some in between size scale or something?
haha I know - it's a marketing thing... that way it doesn't put people off who just model in 00 (or just in H0)... but it's actually 00 scale, in H0 gauge - definitely an odd one!
Thanks for watching,
Sam :)
Sam'sTrains Don't you mean it's in 00 guage? I actually seen a video where they explained guages and scales and guage refers to distance of rails. Where scale means size of the models. I'll link you the video and see if it helps.
ruclips.net/video/_BlcsGbWiBA/видео.html
(Edit: Okay I guess it can be interchanged guess it just is the difference of UK and US. Which can be confusing when you do both such as myself. (That being 00 scale and H0 scale.) The only conclusion I had on this is to let customers know it can run on the same size rails. Since you can buy HO scale track and place a 00 scale loco on it and run it with no issues. That's actually how I tested some locos of mine while I was waiting for my 00 scale track and power pack.
I don't think they're 00 gauge - the wheelsets are supposed to be incorrect for 00 scale models, because they're designed to run on H0 scale track; loco bodies in 00 scale are supposedly oversized!
Sam'sTrains Could be something they did in recent years I suppose then. As I have had some old Hornby locos (for example a Hornby railways 14XX 0-4-2) but only a means of testing it on HO scaled track. Not only did it fit but ran with no issue. So my guess is they did that hoping to get international customers without alienating them because it says 00 scale only
Hi again! Absolutely - it will run perfectly, that's to be expected! Basically this is what it is.... you have two different scales which are designed to run on the same track gauge. Therefore, one of the two scales has to be 'inaccurate' in order to fit on the same track as the other. It so happens that H0 locomotives are the ones that are in-proportion to their wheelsets. 00 scale locomotives have slightly out-of-proportion wheelsets (smaller) to fit on the smaller gauge track! I could be wrong on that - but that's the way I understand it!
All the best,
Sam :)
Nice trains 👍
Thank you! :D
I have the hornby mallard
Oh nice! How do you like it?? :3
Cheers,
Sam :)
Nice review, Shame about the coal detail
Thanks a lot! Yeah it is a shame - not much to be done about it really, but I think these are meant to run well rather than look good lol!
Cheers,
Sam :)
what years are these models from
sam sorry for reporting you went to reply to your comment and accedentily reported you SO SORRY but thanks for the information
haha not to worry - easily done lol! ;D
Golden eagles number 2 is messed up

Thanks very much, glad you liked it,
Cheers,

haha well spotted - will do! :D
Cheers,
Sam :)
JUST DONT GIVE OLDER LOSOS HIGH POWER ON THE CONTOROLER
Well I sometimes do - it doesn't harm them for short periods, as long as they're nicely oiled and serviced!
ok:}
got the tip
DOCTOR WHO RULES!!! TARDIS! kkkkkkkkkkkkK
haha!! ;D
if u have mint triag locos u sould make vids on them and try to run them if they run u sould not keep them mint and run them cuz whats the fun of a working triag train still mint in box
Yeah absolutely - there's no sense in keeping them in their boxes, though I can run them and keep them mint too! You can see loads of my tri-ang locos on my channel!
All the best,
Sam :)
GOOD IDEA :}

Spencer
Yep! It's the same class! :D
