Gable end returns have always been my litmus test. To be sure, I’ve seen them butchered with weird “matching roof pitches” and asphalt shingles, but generally, if you go to the trouble - versus a pork chop box - you’ll work in other details. @kurtvonfricken6829 I just feel the modern style has a clean feel to it. The older style feels dirty. The simplified version has less to clean, and the modern colors give a look of wealth. Landscaping is the biggest problem with older homes.
The new windows look so much better. The placement of those original 2nd floor windows doesn't seem to make any sense. Were they constrained by interior wall placement? A seemingly simple window replacement could be much more complex if they require moving of entire walls inside.
And people wonder why we like old style houses over new ones
