Making a Ring from Rolex Steel - 904L Stainless Steel Ring
HTML-код
- Опубликовано: 6 окт 2024
- Today I make a ring out of 904L Stainless Steel. This is the same metal alloy that Rolex (and other high-end brands) use to make their watches. It holds an incredibly high mirror polish and it is insanely impervious to corrosion including ocean water and even high strength acid. It has many benefits of a noble metal like gold, but it retains the high strength of steel, it's really a best of both worlds situation.

My heart makes a jump when american people measure in mm :>
Funny you say that I measure in mm
What do you measure in?, I'm australian and I measure everything in mm
I'm a clay sculptor in the automotive industry and we have to use metric. It's still taking me some time to get used to it because I was a cnc machinist for a few years and used the imperial system
@@melzariodesign 3/24th would drive me nuts.
The Nitric Acid with the meteorite ring made a cool design though. Itd be cool to make a ring like that and then reinforces the air gaps with some resin
i thought the same thing. that was a happy accident.
2:07 theres a frame of you holding the gold bar?
Wow, just great to see this...and I lost my custom gold band years ago so I think I found what I am looking for!
Gorgeous looking ring and incredible craftsmanship.
Bro, you should try some thinner rings. I'd like to see what you could do.
That would have been the perfect wedding band for my hubby, 11 yrs too late tho ;D But it´s beautiful :) nice work :)

@Mr_ E54 I think they got married 11 years ago
I hate watching videos that reminds me of my job but dang you murder these videos. Lathe lyfe
I think you used to be in our ward. I recall an adair family in our ward a few years back and then I saw your wasatch sweatshirt and was then sure of it.
I think it’d be cool to make a watch ring.
I've got a ring watch, bought it in the 80s.
@@susanmiller6023 never even thought that was a thing! Will Google now.
Your work and your passion is spectacular!,!!!!!
I would love to see an "Elemental" subscription box. Have the components for we ring represent Earth, Air, Fire, and Water. That would definitely be a subscription box I would buy several of!!!!
Love that idea!
Patrick Adair Designs there’s a J. Adair jewelry maker in Hilo, Hawaii, wonder if it’s your relative?🤔
Anyway...awesome videos, thanks for posting!!!
Bob Davis I'm guessing you haven't seen some of his prices
Your videos just get better. You inspired me to get a used mini-lathe. Now to figure out just what I can do with it. 😎
Looks beautiful 👍🏻
Ohhhhh, I want the meteorite ring after acid bath. It looks so cool that way.
Great looking ring!! But please don't run a lathe wearing a jacket it's not very safe.
Lloyd not even the jacket, dude was wearing gloves (with the buffing wheel too), super dangerous
Great job!
Why is so high the 2nd lathe?
And why is the out cutting tool hanging out so much from the tool holder?
Use some oil, when you sanding and the sand wont fall on the lathe and wont suck in the chuck.
Super nice and good job on exicuting the design
Tellement magnifique j'aurais aimé avoir la même ❤
Simply beautiful
I love watching you make those rings you are very talented keep up the good work
Love your videos
and your style
Omg my dude. The ring looks phenomenal man. That is one ring I would love to where with my watches.
Your watches 😂
What a beautiful ring, not really practical but still a beautiful ring
Why aren’t you using the tailstock for the drill bits? Also...what’s with the random subliminal shot of gold at 2:07? Love the idea of matching a ring to a high end watch, btw. Gorgeous work here :)
Lost my tail stick chuck and new one hadn’t arrived. Haha we’re either marketing geniuses or we made a silly editing mistake, you decide ;)
Thank you!
I have seen your video after such a long time. You have the same passion as before but you have improved everything else. The production, editing and the voiceover to explain the process. Ways better. Nice to see the efforts.
Thank you! I really appreciate the compliment
I've been a subscriber for years now. Your videos are always amazing, although I like to give my input from time to time... Most of us are watching from our phones on low level brightness or even night mode settings. Can you throw a few lights up in the background (with your full body shots)?
Did you put your drill bit in the tool post??
I've been waiting on somone to machine this on RUclips
You should try doing a bead blasted finish on a steel ring like this, they leave a very nice satin finish on steel when they are done.
Pretty cool, but I'd prefer the industry standard 316L Stainless Steel done in the same manner. Can we get a 316L Stainless comparison ring?
Very cool video! Thanks for sharing.
Great job on the ring, and video.
Try to make a titanium wallet/card holder like the ridge wallets would be cool to watch
Patrick that stainless look amazing and so durable wow I never knew just how strong 904 is. Thanks bud, and nice ring and nice new lathe
Denny
@MotoPaisano Sure makes for a beautiful finish might have to buy a bar of it see how turns out
What was the flash of the gold bar at 2:08 for?
Any one else notice..
Yes that was so sudden and confusing
I think that was probably an editing error. same image showed up earlier when he was talking about the chemical resilience of gold.
When you have a gold bar tou gonna wana flash that a little
What music did you use for this video? It's really cool!
the master is back again.
Very cool !
I have that steel on my wrist now. I said "corrosion" out loud whilst watching, and I could hear my 48 year old watch laughing.
48 years ago Rolex used 316L not 904L. Both are corrosion resistant.
@@rcn7194 thanks, good to know.
Great work! 👍 why is 904 difficult to work with? I mean, it's known to be much much softer than the standard 316, which is industry standard for watchmaking. Known to be easier to polish as well
904L is not as hard as 316L which can easily be machine with HSS tooling but it is very corrosion resistant.
316L 904L
Hardness (Rockwell) 95 70-90
Hardness (Brinell) 217 150
not gonna lie i like the acid etched one
Hmmm you could have brushed the edges and polished the center, like the polished center links on the GMT Master II.
But I suppose this matches the Submariner bracelet.
The biggest reason I did it this way is the fact that it’ll hide scratches better because 90% of scratches happen on the top surface of a ring.
Can I ask what type of lathe is this? What brand what model?
Cheers! Excellent video. Thoroughly enjoyed!
do you have a link to the drill bits, lathe bits and the boring bar used in this one?
Nice vid
Hey, i was wondering how do you get your stainless steel to be scratch resistant. I personaly use 304 stainless steel but unfortunately keeping the finish on point is kinda hard. Hope to get help from you!
Cool!
Can you share where you got those elongated Dremel sanding bits?
I think the 150g finish is a little rough personally. I use 600g to get satin on knives
As always, amazing job...just a question, what kind of lathe do you use?
Why such a large diameter blank? Was that the only size available?
What would be the cost for a ring like this?
this music 7:30 i love it
pls tell me what name is it
Nitric acid will make stainless steel look more shiny. It lifts up the chrome molecules.
My boyfriend loves this ring! 😏😏
Since you wear glasses, lose the circle lights for the cinematography, and get some diffused lights
Lose, Leoo
does anyone know if the website also ships to the netherlands?
thanks.
8:25 looks like you had a little accident 😳
as a materials engineer, I found this cool to see
Jon Singham As a metals tech, I appreciate this and also thinks it’s really cool
As a person I appreciate this video
I need it
2.
Love the music in this one :)
I don't like that clickbait. Sure its the same class of steel but thats like calling my miata a space shuttle because they used the same type of aluminium for parts.
Clickbait would be calling it a watch when it’s not. Literally nothing about any part of this video is clickbait. I said it’s a RING made from Rolex steel, that’s not clickbait at all.
I agree with Patrick, it wasn't misleading at all. You need to read bro.
@@PatrickAdairDesigns Rolex steel would be steel processed by rolex. It would be really cool if you took a broken rolex, melted it down, and made a ring from that. But 904L steel is just the same grade they use. 2 very different things in my mind. I'm not hating on you. I love the videos just hate seeing misleading titles like that.
@@PatrickAdairDesigns rolex buys their steel. They don't make them.
how much do you sell these for?
got that boring bar sticking out a mile, i recommend using better tool projections
Oh wow, it's a nickel superalloy!
Excellent, you know your stuff, very impressed. ☆
Thanks!
Wait i saw ur other vid, and u said u were making it for a customer? it was the obsidian video 1.0. how can i like, yknow ask you to make a custom ring for me?
I think a ring of carbon it lead Would ve cool!!
How about making a ring from Cave Crystals???
Como mando hacer uno de esos :(
the musice at 6:18
Is it true that 904 is easier to scratch than 216L?
It's a lot softer than 306 steel, it's very similar to 9ct gold. It looks and feels like a precious metal like platinum but it's not. Its similar to the tale of a polished brass ring looking like a gold one.

Can u please make a wooden ring only using hand tools
Lol i didt see rolex ring like that hehehe
Yo quiero un anillo de acero bueno
Use safety equipments
Belt sanders scare me. oof what if you hit your knuckle to it 😖
Wait a second. Rolex dont have own patented steel alloy only based on 904L?
How much are those lathe bits, roughly? They could be 80 Cents or 800 dollars, no idea... ^^
mcbrite there are a wide range of them. You can get high speed steel blanks you grind yourself for next to nothing, all the way up to the indexable tooling with carbide inserts. The indexable can be pretty affordable, but you pay for what you get. A good midrange indexable brand is Accusize.
@@CrashingCarbide so 80 cents or 800 dollars? I don't intend to buy them, I'm just curious...
mcbrite I purchased a 7pc Accusize indexable ser for around $180. With some extra inserts for around $15 per 10 pack
Rappers are punching the air rn
L stands for low lead.
Less music. Way too loud
70th
$400.00 for a stainless steel ring? That’s kind of high, imo…
Where did you get that much 904L? Rolex doesn’t exactly sell their metals
Rolex buys their 904L steel.
2:07 easter egg ??
Lol that was an accident but yeah let’s call it that
It looked like a 2018 Elizabeth II gold bar!
904 l you kidding me
isnt It possible to just melt it in a ring die , than to waste 90% of material
My thoughts: music is unnecessarily loud and your voice is too quiet. I have to keep toggling the volume.
Edit: I gave up and muted it.
Final thoughts: I like the ring and some of the techniques used. The video style is less than.
Splattertube exactly!
10th. Nice video!
this color grading is awful background is so dark bro :( i used to like it before
Make me a ring please
2:08 wtf is that
First

jesus the music is awful and not needed
