- Music is quite important, too. Low-fi music was a generic term for songs not meant for radio play -until J Dilla and Nujabes came around and laid the foundation for an entire genre. Watch The Full Story Of The Lofi Girl at @WeAreDraper
J dilla and Nujabes were born on the same day. The legacy of both of them will live on for as long as music is still around.
they were born and died in the same month
Bro I was about to mention this🙌🏿💯💯💯🔥🔥🔥
But a Google search told me one JD died 2006 .... Other one 2010
I guess you mean feb lol
It's like God saying "You two, go to the world and create a new music genre."
Rip Nujabes💜
Rip jdilla
No. Rest in beats to them.
It's a shame how less the world knows about nujabes and dilla
its a shame how people want to put them BOTH in the same category when they weren't the same
J Dilla👑
Many know about Dilla but not Nujabes tho.
@@dn30001wdym?
@poppatato4183 the question is why do people want to lump them together (other than same birthdays and same death days)
Let’s not rewrite history. Respect to both legends but this has been a thing in hip hop since the early 90’s
he’s white
LOL 😂
for real, that's what i'm thinking and my boys wore black fwhen nujabes died
J dilla 1996 ruclips.net/video/iNTrpaZQlo0/видео.html that sounds exactly like lofi
exactly boom bap sample based hip hop been a thing before dilla and nujabes but they are both legends
Rip to both legends ❤
“Boom bap “ been around fam.
They don't know
Saw someone say lo-fi is just gentrified boom bap lol
@@joeclarke7982 it is lmfao
@@joeclarke7982 😂😂 nah that's crazy
@@vamoneygroup oh they know.... This game have been played long before us with jazz, rock and roll, etc. Now they are using Dilla as the whipping post
I read Lofi Hip Hop is gentrified Boom Bap and its stuck with me ever since
LoFi usually is boom bap, but boom bap isn't that frequently LoFi
@@_Mrozek_ and STILL one person orginated it, not two
boom bap and lo fi are both pretty reductive terms when u think about it they both are vague, encompass a huge variety of music, and they have some overlap
Marcus D’s comments on Nujabes’s legacy stand true. He is remembered as a lofi artist yet ultimately he didn’t make lofi music and categorizing his music as such is a giant slap of disrespect
Yup, im pretty sure him and those around him remembered him as a "hip hop" artist. It was that "japanese" hip hop if you wanna call it that. So now all of a sudden everyone wanna categorize this stuff into a thing called "lofi" and feel cool saying it. Nujabes was straight up hip hop.
Coming from Marcus D who is a great producer in his own right, I’d support this stance 1000%
Dilla been round before 2000 bruh
Pretty sure Lofi was just a label for the nature of the recordings before we turned it into a genre
idiots who don't understand the origin called it lofi. lofi is not a name for a genre.
Rest In beats nujebas, love the luv sic series
This has been a thing in boombap (& black metal too) way before them lmao
J dilla is the closest thing that sounds like Lofi tho
J dilla 1996 ruclips.net/video/iNTrpaZQlo0/видео.html sounds exactly like lofi
@@Tman33919 lofi isnt a definite sound. Lofi could be something like early darkthrone or jdilla
@@user-gd1no3gf6d yeah but I’m just saying j dilla was making sounds like that since mid 90s and maybe before that
@@Tman33919 and I’m saying black metal was doing that before
Both are legends!
Last thing I need is a yuppie trying to explain lo fi hip hop beats.
I got nothing against yuppies, but this guy really don’t understand what Dilla and Nujabes were doing.
😂
Lol well said
Rip Seba Jun. Your music shaped my life in many ways.
Stop comparing both of them lol. Dilla’s 1994-1997 beats sounded like lofi. Dilla was on some pimp shit and not making beats in a rainforest.
Hahaha love it
Dilla sounded like hip hop in the 90s not lofi.
J Dilla and Nujabes were born at the same day tho, legends ❤
They also died in the same month they were born.
Shame we couldn't get an album collab with Nujabes, J Dilla, and MF Doom
💯 facts, respect from another lofi artist from indian
Madlib been doing lo-fi style since 1998. Madvillainy is what really got it going
Rest in beats Nujabes. Even though I wasn't a fan of his until after he died his music will always be the first I'll go to if I need to feel comfort or happiness.
R.I.P DILLA!!
Heavenly Lords 💖 continues blessing all of #j.#dilla's & the late #Nujabes (#rip #sire #seba #jun ) 's loved ones. Keep blessing it & keep forth on blessing them ° namaste🕉️🎼
I was born on Feb 7 too. RIP Nujabes and J Dilla🕊️
I am so blessed I discovered Nujabes music . R.I.P King
She talked and talked withour saying anything of substance 🤷♂️
You must never have heard of DJ Krush (Japan) and DJ Shadow. (USA) 1990's. Also, Portishead's DJ.
These were the ones who made hip hop differently...filtered...tweaked and used unorthodox effects and samples on hip hop beats. They used slower bpms and also faster bpms than usually hip hop of the time.
Record labels labeled it trip hop and a new genre was formed with various other artists influenced by their style.
Props to JD and Nujabes but I promise you if they are alive today... They would give homage to Shadow and Krush. 1,000,000 percent 💪
Commented somewhere else but nujabes also owes a huge amount to DJ deckstream
I listen to all of them. Honestly, I've *never* come across someone who initiates a name drop of Krush. I used to have a 3-4 hour radio spot at WVFS Tallahassee, Florida State University's student-run radio station. That's where I learned about Krush, Nujabes, and Shadow. When I first heard Building Steam With a Grain of Salt it was one of those moments like - fuck, I will never forget this moment and how have I been alive for 25 years and this is the first time I've ever come across this dude. Nujabes and Krush were different, mad impressed by both but they all had their own voice and flavor. The game changers always leave too early. I literally cried when MF DOOM'S death hit the internet on New Years Eve. For weeks and weeks I would get emotional and have some tears run. It literally felt like I lost a family member. DOOM wasn't "old" and he had been in the game for so long. I thought he would be around for a long time, that my kid would listen to his music with me one day. Then he was just gone. When people say "Ayo Biggie or Pac?" it's like, shit, if that's your "rap burning question" than you can go ask someone else. Learn about Big L and then come ask me that dumb ass question again. Music helps sculpt the people we become, for better or for worse.
Neither are lo-fi, just because you watched the anime girl channel doesn't make it lo-fi.
Interesting take. What genre of music do you think they made?
@@WeAreDraperhonestly they had their own style, but I would say they are still closer to boom bap than Lofi. I do think though, their beats have stuff in common with modern lofi beats. They represent and are responsible for a transition into lofi, even though I wouldn't classify them as lofi.
@@WeAreDraperthey are very interesting producers because along with madlib, I think you really can't confine them to one predetermined subgenre. That's a compliment to me because it lends credibility to how forward thinking and creative they were.
J dilla 1996 ruclips.net/video/iNTrpaZQlo0/видео.html sounds exactly like Lofi
hip-hop, you knob@@WeAreDraper
Nujabes nujabes nujabes!
TRYING TO REWRITE OUR HISTORY AND CULTURE IS DISRESPECTFUL
there lives were parallely connected some how
😮
Shallow dynasty is how I learned lo-fi music
guru jazzmatazz was too, but hes niche, hes the other one, hes good.
Rest in beats Nujabes and J Dilla!!!! ⚡️🙌
i miss nujabes
Whats an example of 1950s lofi?
oomff.. Lofiwax
Yes! Rip J Dilla 🍩 & Nujabes ⚔️
Killer outfit bro.
Thank you sir 🙏🏻
luvsic series, samurai champloo osts and dont cry jdilla
They didn't make lofi they made high fi!
@jacekmakes I said they didn't make lowfi music they made hi-fi reread what I said
@jacekmakes this youtube video is trying to claim that J Dilla and Nujabes created low-fi hiphop which they did not they created hiphop! Hence I said hi-f meaning high quality
rip nujabes and j dilla
Where does Madlib fit in here?
Nujabes style I would associate more with the Lo-Fi sound, but even his music wasn’t really Lo-Fi.
❤️🔥
So that's why most lo-fi music today sounds like music Nujabes would've written if Nujabes wasn't good at writing music.
Jay dilla started lofi. Nujabes was heavily inspired by Jay dilla
J Dilla was a Hip-Hop DJ/Producer, so was Nujabes
@@d1sk-cord531 But, only one is credited for being the "godfather" of lofi.
@EbsSeven 'lo-fi Hip-Hop' Lo-Fi isn't a genre, and even so Nujabes wasn't known as a Lo-Fi anything while he was alive, he was always known as a Hip-Hop Producer
It's hip hop. Lo-fi isn't a genre. It's a style.
What’s the difference between a genre and a style?
@@WeAreDraperhip-hop is the genre and lofi is the style. The adjective of a genre isnt wholly a genre in itself without the base genre. Its piano based boombap most of the time. (Which people have been doing before and during the beginnings of these two's careers, by the way.)
To get more nit-picky literally any string of words can classify as a genre so youd be technically right in saying anything is a genre. Like "lofi doorjam soul" is a genre *with an adjective at the begining to specify the STYLE within the genre.*
"Happy funk" is a genre. Is "happy" alone a genre? or is it a style of music?
Early daniel johnston and early dilla are both "lofi" in sound but genre-wise are complete opposites. Its a descriptor of a style within the base genre.
Sooooooo… it’s a genre.
@@WeAreDraper it's a style of any kind of music that has been bastardized into being called a "genre" by people who crammed a general adjective for a recording style into a hip-hop shaped box. What did I say that still drew you to the conclusion that it's a genre? Im interested to talk about it but If this is just to get me and others to comment more to boost the algorithm, you win I guess lol.
No I'm not trying to be dull, I just don't get the point.
Your comments states: "To get more nit-picky literally any string of words can classify as a genre so youd be technically right in saying anything is a genre." So it's just a matter of what you feel like is "worthy" of being classified as its own genre.
I understand it would be bizarre to define "happy funk" as a standalone genre and not a specific "flavor" of funk, but lofi has clearly grown into its own sound. There's artists and producers that would describe their music as simply "lofi music" because in the last 10 years it's become its own thing. Yes, it is mostly piano based boombap, but when it isn't people would still cal it lofi. I just don't feel like there's a specific need to be nit-picky about terms when the main point is essentially unaffected.
The Pharcyde predates both producers and they were pretty goddamn lofi. especially passin me by....and countless other artists between 90-93. this isnt that hard to learn about.
Who’s Dimitri?🤨 Yoshifumi Kondo is the director of Whisper of the Heart
Dimitri is the founder of the lofi girl channel. That’s what the original video is about!
Punk and Dub music was low fidelity since the 70's.
J Dilla is not Lo-Fi!
Lol these weebs are delusional
J Dilla nor Nujabes started lo fi, partook in it, made a claim for it, etc. 🤦♂️ If anything, Fly lo's early stuff is more closely aligned to the early workings of lo fi music, alongside the early 2000s Los Angeles scene.

This is not true bro
Slum Village 💯
Why we keep forgetting fatjon tho he was in the samurai champloo ost
No worries, we didn’t- you should check out the entire video😉
@@WeAreDraper thank u I thought I was the only one bro 🤧 I thought I was alone

Completely false.
Are you guys high
Very much so.
ruclips.net/video/iNTrpaZQlo0/видео.html
Lofi is nujabes creation. Not dillas.
You slaughtered Nujabes's name. Shame on you.
Nujabes K
U have to thrown fat Jon in there too
We did, in the full video! 😉
lofi is not a genre
I’d say it is now, people definitely categorize a very specific sound with that label
@@WeAreDraper In life, when one person calls you an idiot, most likely, they’re the idiot but when a handful of people call you an idiot, perhaps it’s time to do some self reflection. According to Oxford dictionary, Lofi music is “unpolished, amateurish, or technologically unsophisticated, esp. as a deliberate aesthetic choice”
Dilla and Nujabes were certainly none of the above…
@@perfectplates What a sophisticated argument sir! I do admit it was a very huge oversight by our writer not to consult the dictionary when making this video! However, rest assured we have informed them of this grave mistake. Good thing music genres are strictly defined by the Oxford dictionary and we don’t need things like culture, context, critics and independently-made content to further expand their definitions and blur their borders! Also- thank god words and naming conventions are inextricably bound exclusively to their original meaning and context and can’t, under any circumstances, be remixed or used retroactively to refer to things that were once known by different names! I mean what a crazy, nuanced and messy world that would be! Dictionaries are a life saver.
nujabes didnt make lofi he made jazz
The most made up BS I have ever heard...
Its not lofi ffs lmao
J dilla and nujabes are boom bap artists
Nujabes is also the creator of aruarian dance
The one about having no enemies
J dilla precedes nujabes. J DILLA created lofi. A Japanese man copied and took credit
Weeabos exploded his career lol also dilla was making beautiful technical chops while nujabes would run an 8 bar loop over a 2 bar drum loop.. in high quality.
lofi music is the death of music... please don't tarnish their legacies with that soulless garbage
Not too many comments here yet so gonna use this as a little PSA to go listen to nujabes early collaborator DJ DECKSTREAM. hugely underrated and helped nujabes found his label hydeout productions.
Nujabes is not lofi lol its hip hop
Black metal was lo fi by essence.. way before hip hop
Black metal has nothing to do with lo-fi, tf you smoking???
