That's true of 99% of coffee equipment :) He has worked with them on this but leveraging his porcelain relationships to offer a different style for folks that don't like plastic, etc. :) - Kat
So glad Bonavita stepped in and made a porcelain version of the Clever. Instant purchase for me. Love the valve, and I expect that, with good preheating, it will keep a much more stable temperature than the plastic CCD.
No worries! :) It's true that the longer your coffee is in contact with water, the higher the caffeine concentration and possibly the more bitter it can become. So it could be that someone was recommending against immersion/steeping with coffee for that reason. - Kat
I had a coffee (Ethiopian Yirgacheffe) brewed this way for the first time at my local coffee shop just the other day and was very surprised by how clean and present the flavours were. It's a great technique.
Your assessment is inaccurate; they offered a coffee maker in the US that could not be offered because of brand issues (Melitta) and they offered this after discussing it with the co. that produced it in plastic co-signed their production of it in a non-plastic format (which is important to some people). We support innovation, creativity and authentic business practices. Period. Don't tell me who I should support unless you plan to perform the same level of research that I do. - Kat
We didn't like the build quality of the overall unit and it didn't give a noticeable / better cup of coffee. We carry stuff that fills some type of gap / need we have in our product set and not everything makes the cut these days (that said, we still have nearly 2k products, so .... ;) ) - Kat
The lever is plastic and the apparatus in there is a combination of both rubber and plastic. We finally got these in so we'll be doing more intensive reviews / demos of them ... stay tuned. - Kat
Just got one today. I'm pretty surprised by how good the coffee was from such a simple device! The porcelain helps heat retention and gives it a nice heft. Hopefully the little plastic arm holds up to continued use.
I just had a thought: could you use this for a single cup cold brew? I would imagine you could just set it up with a coarser grind and room temperature water and let it sit in the fridge over night and then just put it on you cup and extract. I think this would make an interesting video too!
I'm no expert but I always read that coffee should not be steeped, only tea. Don't remember why. I think one reason might be not being able to have the water in contact with grounds at constant temp.
Is the lever also made of porcelain? Or is there some plastic in there? Is there a robber piece that helps hold back the coffee when the lever is in the "off" position?
i so enjoy your video reviews - probably not such a good idea to include a product rep in the review - i feel if he were not there - you might be more candid sharing your thoughts as you do with your other reviews
Thanks for the input. I would say this is more of a product demo because of Brian from Bonavita. We do enjoy having reps showing their products though. - Steven
I'm so anti-bonavita right now. they have copied everyone's design and made a cheaper version and somehow managed to sell well. this is basically a clever dripper made with porcelain. i cannot support this kind of product and you guys should not as well

I think they're only bringing them into the US right now but we will be adding them to our International products shortly thereafter - Kat
It's the first version available of this that's constructed of plastic - Kat

Not sure, we haven't tested the Clever, but their design is very similar, save for the actual material (porcelain vs. plastic). - Kat
You will be able to purchase it from us Internationally, but I'm not sure if Bonavita will be distributing it outside of the US at this time. - Kat
I'm sure she's going to add it to her arsenal of preps ;) - Kat

Yeah, we just used ones we had on hand from Hario - 02 size I believe - Kat
Yeah - it's the Bistro 15 oz. model - Kat
Since I've tasted both, pretty sure it isn't the same taste, but thanks for the suggestion :p - Kat
The majority of coffee preps actually involve some form of steeping, so not sure where you heard this. - Kat
Blooming allows for outgassing; excess in the beans can mean a more sour cup - Kat
It's pretty rad! Hoping to see it on the market soon. - Kat
Yeah, it's cool -- I'm definitely going to pick one up myself when they're available on the market! :) - Kat

No, sorry. We tested it and decided not to carry it. - Kat
Is that a double walled Bodum cup? I want one.
Do you know if it is going to be shipped to the Uk?
Cause it sounds great
Awesome! :D Thank you for sharing that. - Kat
Thanks for pointing this product out, look forward to trying it!

Haha - Kat
Any chance you guys are going to review the new Bodum Bistro Electric pour over coffee maker?
