The first FaceTime version was based on peer-to-peer and ready to be deployed on other platforms. Apple was sued for patent infringement regarding this protocol and now FaceTime calls must go trough Apple servers. Hence it won't be cross platform any day soon.
Yeah, I urge everyone to stay away from ANYTHING with a requirement to "complete an offer." I've noticed this scam everywhere, on games downloaded from shady sites, on fake game mods, and more. Even if you complete the offers and don't put in the information, the app or extension you downloaded doesn't even have the supposed content, like in this video
Yeah, so many red flags here just from the Chrome Webstore page. Sadly, there are SO MANY extensions like this. So, so many. It's ridiculous. You could make a series of literally hundreds of episodes analyzing all of them. Plz don't, tho; they're all the same, more or less. You can file reports on them, but there's nothing stopping them from making more and reuploading the same extensions. It's the same as email scammers. You can report them, but email addresses are free, so they can infinitely make more. I wish Google would limit how Chrome extensions are submitted. I love the quote, "We wants what we wants."
Maybe Google saw this video because if u search facetime for chrome there are way less extensions than originally and the shady developer "chrome" is not there (i think) btw plss do a video on "snapchat on pc"
I downloaded the extension and put a fake email address and password and it let me in, so that proves it is a scam. When I logged in it took me to human verification. That was one of those scams that tells you to complete an offer.
The most I might expect to see is someone reverse-engineering the protocol and putting a project on github/gitlab/subversion. But trust me, last year I researched FaceTime-compatible applications for MSWin/Linux/Android so my daughter could meet with her tutors. I probably saw this one and would have thought "um... no, not even touching that one". Ended up having her use my old 2010 MacBook Pro until I got hold of an old iPad2. If it weren't that she specifically needed Facetime, I wouldn't ever bother with such a closed, proprietary protocol. (embarrassing Google into cleaning up scammer apps? Yeah, Google knows NO shame)
6:02 I believe the scammers can use that first page to steal Apple ID credentials and possibly trigger Activation Lock on all Apple devices connected to that account, and hijack other accounts using the same credentials too. Also, in the background, the real app would show what the camera sees, and that whole UI doesn't look like an Apple UI on second glance.
Nice idea for a secondary/tertiary channel: Michael's Mischievous Chrome Extensions. Yeah, you heard me right... If you're gonna do a vid on all of these shady extensions in the Chrome Web Store, then you're gonna need a second or third channel. And a second or third Michael, while you're at it. 'Cause this just is like scraping the tip of the iceberg, man...! Nice vid, by the way. Maybe this will finally get Google's butt in gear so they'll remove those scamming extensions...!

My kid once had a sub named “mr conrad” and he was a old guy, and I’m sure that was the person named Steve conrad that gave this thing 5 stars along with easy to use.
Since you published this, all the various versions of this extension are now a 404 (I found 3, all of them released this year). There is still an external "chromebook" version of this that basically goes directly to that web app/site, though - Google can't yank that, the best they can do is somehow block it in chromeOS. Seeing that their "register" accepts empty input, these guys can be easily taken down with a DoS, though...

Also, if you did install macOS in VMWare, I’m pretty sure even if you sign in with your Apple ID, FaceTime and iMessage are notorious for not working in a VM without some know-how
The thing with the chrome website is that it costs money to publish to it so google will accept any apps or developers willing to pay the fee I have no clue if this is the case now but we tried to publish our app to it and it makes us pay.
Leaving something like this on your computer and not removing it is dangerous. I wonder how long it is before they will start being able to get your passwords and even your credit cards potentially.
I’m honestly not surprised. Google has been absolutely garbage at managing unwanted content on their digital storefronts for years. At least Apple’s App Store has better quality assurance than both of Google’s Play Store and the Chrome Web Store combined. Sure, some malware slips through Apple’s QA, but it’s certainly not as frequent as the Play Store & the Chrome Web Store.
Malicious/scam extensions being on the Chrome Web Store isn't new, it's been a problem for quite a while. The COVID-19 pandemic most likely caused an uptick in these kind of extensions being submitted to the Chrome Web Store (as people are obviously staying at home more often). Obviously use common sense when installing an extension to your browser (i.e. check things like developer username, extension preview images, extension description, the permissions an extension is requesting, etc.).
They probably used characters that doesn't exist in the chrome font, and put it after chrome so it seems like it only says Chrome even though it actually says more than that.
While Facetime actually uses open standard audio/video codecs and protocols as the basis for their software, only Apple's software can connect as they use encryption of which the keys are embedded into their software and are well protected. People have tried to extract the keys and have failed so far. So no, nobody other than Apple can make Facetime compatible software due to the encryption.
I thought MiB and KiB are just megabytes and kilobytes. Now I know that there are mebibytes and kibibytes too. A video about this would be interesting.
