I should add Gary did a great job to extract the maximum from a smartphone camera. But I'm with Manny on the "IG tricks" - using the iPad as a reflective surface almost worked, but looked funny to me at her ankles.
Gary's image wins due to the drama of the low angle and converging lines, as well as the neat trick with the laptop and the floor. However, you made a very valid point about the small size of his image compared to your image from the crop sensor camera. BTW, I have a Canon Pixma Pro 200 and I love it. I haven't ordered a print from a lab in over a year, and I am much happier printing my own images at home.
Great point about models, Gary. Use what they want to be called, use common courtesy's like please and thank you throughout the shoot and always, ALWAYS make sure they are comfortable with the poses you ask for. It they're not, ask what they are comfortable with.
Joy's jawline is stunning. You had a picture without her hands to her face, just facing the window that would have been my choice, hands down. Either way, I love this series because it really gives us a glimpse into the process and how you pros think. I love that. It allows us to think along with you all....
These budget shootouts are always so much fun! That being said, I prefer Gary's photo. The lines and the reflection really make for an interesting photo.
My vote is for Gary’s image. He uses the leading lines to lead your eye directly to the model in a visually impactful way. The low angle that he used, coupled with the pose of the model here, also creates further visual interest. The reflective surface adds yet another dimension to this. All of this using simply an iPhone and his own skill and imagination. It goes to prove the point that a great photographer can work with any gear that you give them and create a great image. It’s most definitely the photographer and not the gear!
I can't choose! Printed out I definitely I definitely prefer Vanessa's image, but Gary's image was incredibly cool and really demonstrates what you can do with a smartphone these days.
I vote for both. Maybe that's not allowed but I do love them both. I have to give credit to Gary for being able to come up with a great image using an old iphone. Good job on that Gary.
Great shootout to the both. No clear winner. Love the fact that yiu had to print in order to be judge. Regarding the print. How often do you have to print to make sure the inks dont clog. $600 is not cheap but having a printer is convenient
Gary’s image was well composed and the mark of what this challenge is all about it’s not about the gear but the photographer, however it also showed that when you have mastered the fundamentals gear absolutely becomes the deciding factor. I loved all the pictures but I would say Vanessa you win this one the composition and the image quality were great.
Composition and creativity I preferred Gary. The final result I preferred yours. For this competition I would like to see Matt Irwin or Matthew Granger .
I love your negative space composition but an honorable mention goes to Gary for doing a lot with a little. The iPad trick definitely did THE trick. Kudos to both. Love this series. I’d love to see an episode with either film cameras or medium format!

These are pretty fun . People think you have to buy expensive cameras and strobes etc but the thing is that if you don’t have any problems buying uses gear and make the right deals you can get even professional gear for a bargain. I bought a canon 5d3, canon 70-2002.8 ii and three tamrons ( 24-70 2.8vc,15-30 and a 45 1.8 ) and a Elinchrom quadra strobe for 2500 dollar . Sure made some really good deals on them all but that is a professionel kit for the price of one entry level fr camera
Both were very good! I think I liked Vanessa's just a little better only because I agree with Gary about the iPhone camera. But he did great with what he had as a pro should, am I right?

I really loved and I just a lot and after much consideration came up with a split decision. And so I didn’t what any self respecting judge would do and flipped a coin, heads for joy tails for Gary. It came up tails, congratulations Gary! If this were hockey then Joy would get a point for the Assist holding the iPad!
I love, love, love, this! I really liked Gary’s the best however for getting the most he could out of an old iPhone. The low angle the reflection and the lines wow! Thank you so very much for doing this. I was looking at some of my old images yesterday some I shot with a Rebel, 20D and 40D that came out wonderful. Keep up the great work you two.
I totally love these shootouts! Both are amazing photographers but I have to go with Vanessa this round. If the photos were for social media only it might have gone the other way, seeing them in print made a difference. Great seeing Manny drop by for a peep!
Both are great pictures I would be happy to take, honestly! I'd go with Vanessa's one just because I am not 100% sure that in Gary's image the center column is straight and this makes the control freak in me mad! 🤯🤣
Gary wins totally on full image composition but Vanessa’s image wins on printable size. Both images are strong on lines however the irregular angles in Gary’s image make it better. Of course the best image came out of the Canon printer as it made both photos look real good. (Extra sponsor advertising)
Gary's image was great and especially the whole idea behind it. However 😜 BW lover here so it's your image I prefer more. P.S. I have found myself shooting more and more with my cameras instead of my phone, I understand that the cell is most likely in our pockets all the time and use it's camera for those special moments when the EOS R or the old veteran ( Nikon) D7000 are not with me :D the thing is that if we want to grow as photographers we want grow as much shooting with our cellphones ;)
I would chose Gary’s shot because it was more appealing , Vanessa , yours was a cleaner image , and I loved the wall in the background , but the figure in the image did not speak to me in the same way that Gary’s had. I think you were right to go for a monochrome print. If I had to critic Gary’s shot it would have been that I would have liked the feet of the model to look like they were on the dark surface at the bottom to make the image look finished . Clarity and sharpness are not everything, and the same can be said about blurred backgrounds , as they do not need to be present in every image when shooting portraits ; just as we see in both these examples . Finally , you do not need the latest gear to get great images . I shoot with an eight year old camera and an old iPhone and I have no desire to upgrade my kit . My images are nice and get loads of approval if that is what motivates you to shoot . For me it is what pleases me and not those looking at my images . I enjoy your little videos on comparing gear this way and showing that it is always the person behind the lens who is as important as who is in front of it. The gear is very much secondary to that experience . Sure , new gear makes things happen easier on occasions but not always . This because the camera is a computer these days and despite that, it can still be made to work like an old camera if you know how .
iPhone 7 Plus resolution is 3000 x 4000. I doubt that iPhone 13 mini has lower resolution than 6 years old iPhone 7. I will go with his photo because it looks so good.
I like your photo, Vanessa, but I LOVE his. Still ... you win by technical knockout (pun intended) because of the small image he delivered. I know the iPhone 13 can output a higher resolution image than that, though. #JoyBoysRiseUp
I like Vanessa's out of the two. While it was a great idea to hide the carpet with the reflection, i don't like the way the feet are cut off. Vanessa's is much cleaner and therefore more impactful
I liked Gary's concept, but his image was let down by the iPhone sadly - Joy's skin tone became too supersaturated as a result and if I was going to nitpick, the iPad cut off her feet too close to the ankles. Vanessa's composition wasn't as dramatic, but was super clean and professional, and Joy's skin tone was on point. Now if Gary and Vanessa used the same camera, then there would be nothing in it. Will definitely be trying the iPad in the near future!

I can't believe you missed her making the face. I'm just gonna say this, more models need to have fun like that. I've had so many models that are so serious all the time. I had my 10yr old son with me on my last shoot and he was cracking her up. It was great. He got some amazing smiles from her! I'm always a fan of B&W. Gary used that neat little IG hack with the tablet, which works great for IG. I would have to choose yours Vanessa, in this one. Fun shoot though. Great talent!

If it were an ad shoot for the clothing she's wearing, Vanessa's image is perfect. But as just an image, Gary is much cooler, creative and will get way more attention without drawing attention to the clothing or shoes or anything.
I pick Vanessa's Photo its clean and works in color but I love the Black and white. Gary's photo is good but I don't like that Joy's toes got cut off. plus it is a Printer sponsored video meaning we should judge by the printed image and seeing the details from a camera vs a smart phone is just miles apart.
Gary‘s composition is outstanding, but in terms of image quality you are the clear winner. Thank you!

I print maybe once every few months (because I'm the worst) and have never had a clogging problem, or even needed to clean the heads
