Sassafras is a hardwood that resembles black ash or chestnut. It is commonly used for boats and furniture, but is known to be used for fence posts and utility lumber as well.

Sassafras is a Hardwood but has a Janka hardness less than that of Southern Yellow Pine. Smells awesome when being cut, awesome for turning, furniture, and making canes! First wood I ever worked with, sadly can't find much of it out here in TX!
Too much weight on the blade caused it to bind (but you probably figured that out already). Try removing the slabs after a couple cuts to take the pressure off.
I vote for an outdoor kitchen.

You should put something between the slabs when storing. Or else they will split.
Gotta go with the outdoor bar so you can raise a glass to the best slabs, but it definitely has to include a killer bbq/grill setup.

Im surprised you dont run wedges on pieces that big. Thats gotta be a pretty powerful saw if you dont have to unstack your cuts when you're making slabs.
The wood in front of the blade supports the cut enough the 3-4” behind the blade is supported and won’t pinch the blade. Normally don’t need to unstack or wedge the slabs unless you pop a blade or hit me teal and need to cut in to the log to free the blade.
I agree of all the "how to" videos I've seen, wedges would also take stress off the blade. 3 blades in one day!!!, something is wrong there. Also idk if they are putting spacers between the slabs for air drying when sitting out.
@@markmitchell7359 definitely needs to space them when drying. Stickers prevent rot and allow airflow between slabs
@@markmitchell7359 I run my own band mill and have never needed to put wedges in the kerf it’s not needed. The chainsaw mill I’ll put wooden wedges in so it’s easier to flip them when done milling. The only thing that would snap a blade like that would be pushing through the cut to hard, to much blade tension, or hitting metal and continuing to use that blade. Stickers are a must for air drying if not they will mold and mildew.
Looking forward to your deck bar tree house build! Though booze around a machine like this does sounds like an incredibly squirrely idea.

I think you need a stage. . IE a deck with a raised platform, you also could run woodworking classes on it! But some of those slabs you just cut look like they would be amazing resin barn doors. . . Also you can not go wrong with a BBQ pit and bar. . .

shouldn't you have boards between your slabs so they stay separated so they can dry and cure properly?

Yeah we ripped 1"x 1" out of our lower grade slabs to use as stacking sticks, 1 stick every 4' across every layer to prevent warping when air drying
Yeah John, you need to separate the slabs with 1" × 1" sticks, hell even little 1/2" × 1/2" sticks would be fine. You need to allow air flow between the slabs, or they won't dry properly and could possibly even rot. You don't want all of your hard work retrieving the logs, the fuel to transport, the time you put into milling, to all go to waste. Please put some slats/sticks between the slabs 🙏.

It's a loss of money of course but the most important thing is that he didn't have any injuries when the blade broke
Loved the video. You stuff always inspires me. Speaking of..you could build a deck with a log and slab storage area. Place to keep them off the ground that doubles for entertainment. Like a place with storage on one side and a entrainment space on the other.

We'd definitely have to put in a positive stop next to the rail where you load the logs in with the skid, it would take a shift for the operators to rip the guide rail out of the concrete lmao.

Deck treehouse with a roof, kitchen and of course, a bar, Tiki torches and all. And probably a roof set up over your mill to keep that gorgeous mill all clean and un rusty etc.

Build a pergola with a parking spot for your skid steer. Adding stickers to your slabs while they're drying will help them dry faster. Just use a 2x2s or something similar.

You definitely need an out building to get out of the sun during the summer, and warm in the winter. You need like a 3 season porch/out building. Table chairs, bar for when work is complete. You also have plenty of scrap wood to keep you guys warm during the winter. Fireplace/big wood stove.
I'll take my Norwood HD36 any day! when you're done with a cut it's almost like you just put it through a plainer it's that smooth...... But once 3 years ago I wish I could have cut a 40 inch black walnut log without shaving it to 36" though...

Ambrosia beetle is named after the ambrosia fungus that is typically on its back. It's a symbiotic relationship between insect and fungus where the fungus helps to break down the wood and create a useable food/resource for the beetles larvae to eat as they grow/mature within the wood. Cheers! :)
I vote for a covered patio with a brick bbq/smoker and some kitchen amenities like running water and a mini-fridge or kegerator, all accompanied by a lovely spalted maple table, a bench, and a few chairs

Maybe wedges to prevent binding? IDK much about sawmilling and have never done it. Maybe cut a bunch out of the scraps and slide them in as you're cutting.

would help if you guys installed a debarker it will cut down on dulling saw blades and maybe some sort of water injector system to cut down on the sap sticking to the blades i ran a fully hydro for a couple of years and without the debarker we run through blades faster than we could install them given the logs we cut was dragged straight through the mud to the mill!

Great project and loving the milling. It’s nice to know that when you go “home” all the relatives always have an opinion on whatever you are doing and are not against sharing with you. Are you going to be using stickers on those slabs? Are you ever going to talk Matt into coming down to your shop? I’d love to see something made out of the sassafras. Interesting looking wood. I’m voting for the covered patio/grill station/bar set-up to watch the milling. For those folks not working they can turn it into a drinking game… you know, Whenever John blames someone (take a drink) broken or dull blade (take a drink) every time someone makes a crotch joke/comment (take a drink). I know the Price of diesel is expensive but I would give anything to have your Ford truck. I have a 1997 Ford F150 with a 4.6. She don’t have any balls anymore but I still love her because she’s the only thing I ever had that was mine. Thank you for sharing your videos man. I think it would be sweet if you put a treehouse over there by the mill. Thank you for sharing.

I vote for a stilted shed/perch like thing with a walk around porch. You’d have a good place for a safety observer and any visitors + a place to entertain clients, catch lunch, and douse the end of the day with some beers 🍻

You need a massive outdoor bar/cabana/kitchen with a pizza oven and smoker.
Your outdoor space needs to include a really nice outdoor kitchen/ smoking area to cook while you're milling

Can see you're loving the mill John! lol... i reckon for pro mill tips and tricks, check out Matthew Cremona's channel. He is doing a lot of home restoration atm, but he has some out-of-this-world mill skills. Can slab logs the size of Texas on his own. very skilled carpenter overall.
Thank god there's a comment section, I am sure John and the boys had no idea about wedges or using them to separate slabs in their storage like they have from the last shop. I am sure he had no idea about this and it totally wasn't mentioned in the last video either where he lost 2 other expensive blades.
I worked in a saw shop for a while at a major lumber company where we did maintenance work on bandsaws and the machines they run on and watching that happen hurt my soul. We had a saw basically explode one time sending shrapnel through the wire cage around the machine… luckily only one person was hit in the back by a tooth that had sheared off and he ended up being alright.

Always a tree house always. But you have to have a balcony off the tree house to watch the mill. Good luck with this project.

sassafras leaves are dried and crushed to make file. its what makes gumbo delicious. 😊
We milled some sassafras already. Its a beautiful wood. It engraves awesome on the laser too!!
Build a deck out of slabs from something you don't want to use for tables, and also put a bar on it made from slabs, with a huge slab table to eat at along with a grill on a slab.

Forester from Erie, that is likely a silver maple. If the leaves look kinda like hard/sugar but the bark looks like soft/red and multiple stems i would say silver (not there to see it)

So, first thing to build is a pole barn over the mill! And buy a big push broom! Outdoor bar and bbq shack is a must.

Deck, mini bar, smoker, roof to extend over the mill, so the rain doesn't stop the squirrellyness. Come fall add tube heaters for year round milling

Epoxy light saber: pour the epoxy in a similar mold but maybe over size it by 1/4” if possible, once cured bore a hole length wise from end to end and insert either A) wooden rod B) metal rod, add several screws to either end through the epoxy and the center rod(whichever you’d choose) to secure it in place, then you should be able to turn it on the lathe without it bouncing around too much and also you’d have a reference of center. Once turned down, you could add a epoxy cap and maybe reflective strips inside to help illuminate the light

With the prices of Maple nowadays this is a blessing. Gooooodness.
If/when that happens again, and you pick up the slab to break it off while it is lifted up put a piece of wood at the other end and then drop it on to it. It will lever up the far end and break it off without you having to tear the wood by brute force.

Somebody may have already mentioned this but I'm not seeing any coolant on the blade. Does it have you run water or coolant on there? I have a small Mill and I use water and Pine-Sol that runs directly on the blade
