Gamble and Huff are the architects of the Philly Sound. The Intruders are the Godfathers of the Philly Sound

      That's so right.They were underated
for sure.No they were'nt the Delfonics or The Temptations. But just like The Delfonics they had their own sound. Thus far no one has sounded like The Delfonics and definitely no one has ever sounded like The Intruders. I would also call them the Godfathers of Philly sound.
I'll be an Intruder fan for life.
Man, they don't make music like that anymore. Props to The O'Jays and The Delfonics. But before them were the mighty mighty Intruders.

What a blessing it was to listen to the "Philly Sound" back in the days when I was a teenager (on a 45 or album) and now to be able to listen to those same songs over the internet is truly a blessing that I cherish.

RIP to Philly clothing store genius BEN KRASS of KRASS BROTHERS STORE OF THE STARS who put up the money to start the Excel label which released the Intruders "Gonna Be Strong" in 1965 and then put the money together to start GAMBLE RECORDS in 1966 with "Together."

Years ago, a friend and I saw a whole bunch of Philly Soul artists at Westbury Music Fair, they had the Intruders, The Three Degrees, The Stylistics, Harold Melvin and the Blue Notes, The Delfonics and The O'Jays. Great show! They don't make music like that anymore. Thank you Mr. Gamble and Mr. Huff!

I still remember that song almost 50 years late. after chasing girls my life was never the same. boy they never lied about that. going from cowboys to girls. WOW WHAT A LIFE CHANGING EVENT. Met the Intruders back in Cleveland and spent the whole evening sitting around with them ( I was a go-for for a local promo man) while they passed time until the show. They were a genuine bunch of friends who never stopped growing up together. They had us on the floor with all the stories you'll never read about. Especially the one about when the management told them to get rid of Little Sonny because they couldn't understand a word he sang! When they came out the stage the crowd went, where's Little Sonny!? They eventually got him back into the group and the rest is history. The only down side to that night is that they drove back to Philly and were stopped on the Turnpike and those who know, know what resulted. The Mighty Intruders!

+sameeh109 Great Story. Im from Phila. In 1967 we had the Intruders for our Senior Graduation Dance at Lincoln High School. I knew they were talented then, that spring they released ' "Together", they were so good that night...at the Dance. They had many hits, IMO Bobby Star couldn't hold a Candle to Sam '"Little Sonny" Brown...Id love to see them ion the R&R HOF...

I love how Little Sonny used to sound high as a kite, yet had that smooth velvety voice.... You really felt he meant each word he said
. Anybody, by chance remember a guy named Billy Kimes Jr. who used to play guitar for them?

  • @mrstanbmw

Saw them in my hometown of DC, Bird came out singing lead and little Sonny was in the background, then he took over one of the greatest lead singers ever. I believe the first song they sung was Check yourself.
