  • This animation was a paid project I did in 2005 for the patent holder for the "Indoor Skelly Board Game." The idea was to show the game play of a single, complete game between two opponents. The drawback is that I don't do character animation so the game pieces shoot themselves around the board with no human players. If you are a baby boomer who grew up anywhere between New York City and Philadelphia, you know the game anyway, so what the hell.

I used to love playing this game when I was a kid, in Philly we called it TOPS. We use the tops from the milk carton and fill it street tar or melted crayon wax and stick a coin in the middle to give it a little more weight.

I didn't know it was called "Tops" in some places. Anyway, those were the good old days when kids made some of their games and toys themselves.

We use to play this all summer long in Baltimore on the east side back in the late 70’s & early 80’s. We called it Skully and me & my brother’s would fight over the empty milk jug just to get the top, those were truly the GOOD OLE DAYS!

Block to block the rules changed, yet it united us neighborhood children during the summer days and night. Don't let the street light catch you

Last time l played this game was in 1965 in Brooklyn.
Should’ve shown what happens when you miss and you end up on a line.
    Other than that great video.

Thanks for the comment. Coincidentally, 1965 was also the last year I played Skelly in Morrisania (a.k.a. South Bronx) when I was eleven years old. That year my family moved to Hollis (Queens) where the game never really caught on.

caddyjoint96 was big in the 70s in Astoria, Queens right up to the easily 80s kids were still playing! Then the home video game...RIP Skelzies, which had as many different rules, as there were neighborhoods...we called it Scully.

Thanks for your comment. It may be difficult or even impossible to get the indoor version of the game. The patent holder (a "Brother") owns an enterprise that I'd say has been greatly unfulfilled (for one reason or another). I met him in 2005 (fifteen years after his patent was granted). The game itself has existed since around 1910 -- mainly along the path from New York City to Philadelphia. One online games outlet lists the game but shows it as "Unavailable." I found another site offering the sale of this item, and the seller happens to be the patent holder himself, Mr. Darryl Jones. He offers it at a price of $30, but I could not establish whether or not the item is in stock (lest someone would pay for something that the seller does not actually have on hand). Anyway, If you do get in contact with Mr. Jones, don't reveal that I'm the person who gave you this lead because we did not part on good terms. Here is the link to that seller's page:

      Good luck.
