@@Andyvas375 - about 65-70%? I do not know. I saw the Montreal game. Trekiak stood on his head. Montreal should have had way more goals. But woulda, coulda shoulda.
The Russions were outshot but not "outplayryed" as commented on by the biased CBC commentators. There is no concept of "outplaying" an opponnent unless you win! Tretiak had plenty of defensive support in front of him from the forwards and defensmen. In fact his "big" save was not made by him as described by the CBC but by the defensman Guseve . Montreal didn't win a home game because they were not good enought! Get used to it!
Plus, different styles of play. The NHL shoots the puck from all angles and all the time. The Soviets set it up more so shots on goal is never a good measure against USSR
It is possible to win and be outplayed, but this wasn’t one of those cases. In that Montreal game, the Habs played better. The Soviets were not a high shot volume team, so that is even more deceptive that usual when looking at this game. They were a high shot quality team. But the Habs game was a different animal.
The D played by the Army is what NHK teams want now, Possession and first pass. Vasiliev was their best D stay at home. However LOL Vasielev and Maltsev very on the Army team just for this tournament as they really played on DYnamo LOL
Haven't seen this game since watching it live. The 76 Rangers were not a very good team. If I remember correctly, most of the game the Russian team was playing like they were the only team on the ice and the Rangers were chasing them or getting skated around. I'll have to watch it again to see if my 48 year old memories are accurate.
Even just two years before this night this would've been a good game. Rangers still had Hadfield, Park, Ratelle, Rousseau, Giacomin. But after all the changes the team made after the end of 73-74 and immediately after the beginning of the 75-76 season, they were not the same squad that went to the seventh game of the semifinals in 74. Russians would've won anyway, but this game was no contest whereas two years earlier it would've been a good game.
The Central Army Team might as well been the National Team. I recognize sooo many players from the 1972 Summit Series. The Rangers never had a chance from before the start of the match. The only team that could match them was the Canadians (And that was because it was at the Forum, huge home ice advantage)
The canadiens were better than the red army at that time. Completely outclassed the red army in the 70’s. Nothing to do with home ice. All hall of famers on those canadiens team.”s. In 1977 they lost only 8 games in the whole season. They had it all. Speed skill, toughness and great coaching.

Well, basically and basically; CSKA had borrowed e.g. Maltsev and Vasiliev from Dynamo Moscow for this tour, so it definitely was a somewhat stronger Red Army team than normally. However, back in 1975/76, the 2nd line on the national team was the Spartak Moscow trio of Yakushev, Shadrin and Shalimov, and they do not play here; some other key players like defenceman Lyapkin and forward Kapustin are also missing, so I don't know about 80 percent, maybe about 65...
I'm surprised how well the Rangers played. They were one of the worst teams in the league that year, didn't even make the playoffs. Imagine the Rangers playing the 12th best team in the Soviet Union.
At the 9:54 mark on the Rangers bench was my late Cousin with all the helmets standing next to Frank Paice the trainer. John Ferguson in his book called Richie his Best NY Pal and wrote about him on 5 pages!
The next season. New boss John Ferguson had a few players change to matching double digits with the new uniforms...John Davidson 00, Espo 77, and Ken Hodge 88. The trend and uniforms lasted until Ferguson was fired.
GO RED ARMY!!! LOve it how they DESTROY the rangers. For all of you fellow Soviet/Russian Hockey Collectors, the game program was the same for all Red Army and Wings games
Not a good Rangers team then. Some remnants of great teams remained, Fairbairn, Stemkowski but Doug Jarrett and Nick Beverly not strong on D. Ron Stewart would be gone as Coach in a few weeks along with Emile as John Ferguson would become GM and Coach.
