  • Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull is knows as the bad Indiana Jones movie. But with Disney's acquisition of Lucasfilm, and their the failed reception to their Star Wars sequels, they have now decided to make an Indiana Jones spin off called Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny.
    This movie was HEAVILY produced by Kathleen Kennedy which caused both Steven Spielberg and George Lucas to leave the project, and with good reason as Indiana Jones 5 seems to be another bad Indiana Jones sequel.
    But which sequel is worse, Indiana Jones 4 or Indiana Jones 5?

    I actually like Kingdom of the Crystal Skull. Yeah, it's not perfect, but it at least has some memorable moments like the communist motorcycle chase around the college campus, the giant killer ants, the sandpit scene where Mutt has to rescue Indy with a snake, and of course, the nuclear bomb scene.

      People can say what they want about Crystal Skull (I enjoyed it for what it was), at least Indy still felt like Indy and the ending when he takes his hat back from his son was gold. Also, I never had a problem with the idea of aliens being in the Indiana Jones universe. If you're going to have an ark that melts your face, or the fountain of youth, you might as well have aliens in there at that point. The filmmakers at least tried to make it fit within the universe. It's also not like there haven't been theories about aliens helping to build our civilization or being worshipped as gods. You could've easily called Crystal Skull "Indiana Jones and The Chariots of The Gods" (a little nod to Erich von Däniken's novel and claims). I also give the film leeway because I've always been interested in Von Daniken's claims, primarily since I first got into the Stargate franchise (which also dealt with a crystal skull in one episode). Also, nice to see you on here, Hewy. I really enjoyed your content back in the "fellow in the coat" days.

      It’s a good movie. I think most of the hatred of the film comes from group think. Most of the stupid things that people complain about in crystal skull are present in the previous movies. They just come off better because the original trilogy are better shot, edited, directed, and they can just be themselves. CS has to compete with 3 excellent films. If you think that aliens are a worldbreaking or shark jumping, you’re making up rules. It totally makes sense, the concept of ancient aliens is a very well explored concept in fiction, and it could be better done is CS, but it’s serviceable IMO. I hear nobody actually complain about HOW they did it, only that they did it. It’s infuriating.

    DOD erased everything that ended CS with a happy ending! Just imagine if the movie had started out with an adult Short Round, who still wears his baseball cap AND who himself was now an archaeologist! He always saw Indy as a father figure and perhaps he felt inspired by him. He finds something mysterious and decides to seek out Indy after losing contact for the past 20 years. Indy is now head of the university and has become somewhat wealthy and famous after writing several books about his adventures over the years, which would have been later adapted into the Young Indiana Jones Chronicles. Him and Marion are thriving and Mutt has become much more mature with him and Indy on good terms now. Maybe he comes along for the ride? Anyway, Shorty and Indy have a very happy reunion and he manages to convince Indy into one last adventure after he privately confides to him that hes been thinking of retirement. Maybe Mutt becoming a father and his age be a motivator? They go on an adventure together and they have a touching moment in the middle. The movie ends with Indy's retirement and him taking his fedora off and putting it on Shorty's head, as a symbol of passing the torch to a younger generation. Similar to the beginning of The Last Crusade. NOW THAT would have been a trihumph! I would have loved it! It would have been so easy! What do you think?

    To me, no sentence sums up the problem with modern Hollywood than what Eric inferred: "This movie cost $300 million, and yet I can barely remember anything about it. Not because too much happens and you get lost in it, but because it felt like practically nothing happened."
    By contrast, there was a $5 million Studio film (not even Indi) from 2018 called "Upgrade" -- It was smartly written, featured some intense twists, the acting was great, the cinematography was solid and the editing was great, and even just after my first viewing of the movie, I was able to have full conversations with my film friends about why I loved it, and this was a Studio film that cost only 1/60th of Indy 5!
    This comparison also illustrates an interesting Older vs Newer dynamic: Older movies were legitimate entertainment, just sometimes badly (or, frankly, horribly) done, whereas a lot of modern movies feel like mere content, like they're just hoping people will like it enough to buy the BluRay and then tell their friends "Oh yeah - that movie was pretty cool."

    If we’re being honest, Disney had this coming. For so many years, fans have been trying to get them to understand that they didn’t like the movie or show that was released due to poor ratings, quality and writing. And people have been asking Disney to focus on telling an original story and making sure that they are being respectful to the fans of a beloved franchise. But instead, what did Disney do? They accused the people who were criticizing the movies and shows of being racist, sexist, Russian bots and so much more.

    I didn't like Crystal Skull as a kid, and thought the inclusion of aliens was too far out there for me, but after 15 years, I finally gave the film a re-watch. One where I had a fresh mindset and decided to give it another chance, and I gotta say, I really enjoyed it much more now, and I don't mind the inclusion of aliens here since it makes sense to use them given when the movie is set. My only issue with the aliens is when we actually see the alien at the end after all the skulls come together, and this is because the first movies, namely Raiders and Temple, wisely chose to not actually show the main supernatural forces, in their case God and Shiva, and I think that the final scene where Spalko is killed would have been better if we didn't see it, or at least not a full glimpse of it. That said, I haven't seen DoD yet, and I'm glad I haven't

    Dial of Dysentery makes Kingdom of the Crystal Skull look like a masterpiece. Thing is that there are flaws with Kingdom of the Crystal Skull. But the same sense of adventure was there. Dial of Destiny is yet another half assed deconstruction of a beloved hero. And Dial undoes one of the best parts of Kingdom...Indy's marriage to Marion. Then there is the great Poob in the room and that is that Phoebe Waller Bridge's Helena Shaw was so insufferable. You hit the nail on the head regarding the "failed male character" trope. Han Solo, Luke, Indy...all of them follow a similar trajectory. Jeremy Jahns pointed this out too saying if you tried this kind of copy/paste in school the teacher would tell you that you couldn't do that and tell you to do it over.

    I never understood the hate for Kingdom of Crystal Skull. It's just as great as the original trilogy, although The Last Crusade remains the best Indiana Jones movie. As for Dial of Destiny, I enjoyed parts of the movie, the 1944 and the 1952 flashbacks, New York scenes, Antonio Banderas, Indy talking about Mutt's death (Harrison Ford acted greatly in this scene) and the ending with Marion was well acted. Still, the movie was an unnecessary addition to the franchise. I don't mind seeing an older Indiana Jones, but why making him miserable? And like how it was told the video, why not make it a story about a father and a son? Just recast Mutt, put him as a CIA agent, who asks Indy help and Indy has a final adventure and make amends with his son and could also meet his grandchild, like what happened with Rocky in Creed 2.

    35:10 I know this is a show, but Star Trek: Picard did the same thing to it's titular character in it's first season and no one liked that either.
    But when Season 3 came out, Picard is treated with more respect and in the last 2 episodes he, the rest of the Next Gen crew and even the Enterprise D herself have to save the galaxy from the Borg who have assimilated the younger members.
    The show started off by humiliating it's older male lead while putting the newer characters on a pedestal, but it ends with the younger characters getting villainized and Picard and the rest of the old guard save the day and live.
    If this doesn't show that the tide is turning, I don't know what does.

  • @ClassicBrickStudios
    @ClassicBrickStudios 9 месяцев назад +1

    I did always enjoy Crystal Skull. Even though not as much perhaps as the OG movies, I think it served as a great sendoff to a beloved character finding his happy ever after in the end of this movie. The pacing was good, the action was great, the story fine and I think Mutt and Indy had real chemistry and worked great together. They both had their skills to bring to the table and really added to one another.
    Of course the movie has some "meh"-things in it. The fridge nuking scene is just too much of a stretch even compared to other impossible stunts in Indiana Jones. The scene with Mutt and the monkeys was... certainly an interesting choice. Not a good one tho in my eyes. The point of the scene was to establish Mutts character growth that was hinted towards before. But in my opinion, they should've perhaps let him steal a motorcycle from the russians to catch up to the rest and make his dramatic hero entry that way. It would serve the same purpose, while also relying on assets we know he is familiar and skilled with. While Spalko had the upper hand on him when they had their sword fight, where she was basically just toying with him, now she would be outmatched by Mutts skills as a driver on his bike. However both of these scenes that I didn't necessarily enjoy weren't that bad that they ruined the movie for me.
    What is perhaps more unfotunate, I don't feel like the crystal skull and the interdimensional beings were explained enough. I understand that Indiana Jones never did too much to explain the artefacts, but here I think it would've been great to do so. Most of the audience is familiar with the "arc of the covenant" (and it is also pretty well established in the movie early on) or the holy grail, so explaining those further isnt necessary to do. The Sakkara Stones in temple of Doom are explained enough with "those are five magic stones, that the cult believes can help them to bring about world dominance" as they serve merely to teach Indy some character development in the movie and after that are sidelined in favor of the slave freeing. A great choice if I might say so. WIth the crystal skull things are more complicated as it is a more obscure unknown artefact that simply needs explaination to work. I think Kingdom of the Crystal Skull does enough to give a rough outline of the meaning for these skulls, but more insight would've been highly appreciated.
    I also thought that Irina Spalko had a good motivation for a villain, as she wanted to use the crystall skull and its powers as a weapon of psychic warfare against the united states to give the soviets the edge in the cold war. Given that at the time one of the biggest fears in Amerika was that the soviet philosophy would take a hold in the minds of the americans that was a great play on that fear. Combining it with Aliens from the B-movies often associated with the 60s, I think this made for a senseable and compelling take on the time period the movie is set in.
    NOW... Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny... I'm sorry, but that one was hard to watch. They fell back on so many "modern tropes" as you call it. They don't seem to realize that you can bring in new characters, especially in Indiana Jones, without having them compromise or deminish the role of the MAIN CHARACTER WHICH IS AND SHOULD ALWAYS BE INDIANA JONES, YOU KNOW, THE GUY FROM THE TITLE OF THE MOVIE. The problem is that Helena and Indy don't seem to have any chemistry, she doesn't care about him or his life and she is constantly being a jerk towards him. Like how many "haha your old"-jokes did this movie need? I'd argue none at all, but here we are. I know Mutt also was like that in the beginning, but once he saw how capable Indy was both intelectually and physically, he was like "Oh shit thats so cool". Helena is also very very unlikable from her first scenes. She tricks Indy into giving her an artefact and then leaves him to be killed. Kinda makes Dr. Voller look like a secondary villain to be honest. A trend that even continues to the end of the movie, when she knocks out an 80 year old man... That could've very well been a deadly punch. This also wasn't a slap like Marion would give him because he did something dumb again, that was a full on knockout. But yeah, the movie feels more like Indy is being tagged along, because they need him to bring someone to watch the movie. They should've named it "Helena Shaw and the Dial of Destiny (Indiana Jones will also be there, but don't expect something from him. Also he is old, haha, how funny.)". I don't like the old hermit trope... people can also age with dignity. It is possible. Shame on you for that one Disney.

    I think you’re missing the point of the scene where Mutt starts crying. Think about it, you’re searching for the man who is a respectable Oxford professor, an extremely intelligent man, and father figure. You’ve pretty much known him most of your life. Finally you find out where he’s been which is prison cell at an asylum. You go investigate with this persons fellow school friend from the university of Chicago and see writing all over the cell on the walls and the floor. You think he lost his mind and start getting emotional that your friend and mentor has lost his mind. The person you’re with notices this and takes a moment to empathise with you knowing how much this person means to you. That’s basically why Mutt started crying in the cell scene in the movie. If you closer at the movie it’s all there.

Like a Scream 1996 requel that ignores 2-6 that has a reunion with Sidney, Dewey, Randy, and Gale. I know the requel thing is over done, but trust me the requel thing can be done right under good filmmakers. By the way, Scream (2022) is NOT a requel. A requel usually ignores certain films in a long running franchise like H20 ignoring 4-6 or 2018 only considering 1978’s Halloween canon in its continuity.

    Everything about the 5th Indy movie is an insult. The sound design is generic, they don't even use Ben Burtt's punch sounds, except for a few times. And I feel like the opening scene...even though it was decent, it was the only time Indiana Jones felt like *Indiana Jones.* It's like it exists to be a tease for the fans. Like they were saying: "oh you want this Indy? Too bad. This ain't his movie! It's Helena Shaw's movie!"
    That's what it felt like to me. I am sick of male characters being made fun of and humiliated constantly in modern films. And on rare occasions, even classic female characters are treated like shit. Look at how Sarah Connor was treated in Terminator dark fate. She is verbally bashed, insulted and threatened by Grace the whole film.
    But still, I hated this film so much that I refuse to buy this on home release. When I heard Phoebe Waller Bridge was announced to be in the film, instead of Short Round, instant turn off. That was my first sign that this wasn't even worth seeing in theaters. Kingdom of the crystal skull is a far superior send-off. And if they wanted to make another Indy film, then they should have done it years ago.
    The dial by the way, isn't interesting. Its just a glorified compass. Nothing more.

    Ehh to be perfectly honest, Dewey is not a good example for male character deconstruction. Dewey was meant to die in the second film and has always gotten the crap kicked out of him. Plus he wasn’t deconstructed, they used the actors real life relationship with gales actress as inspiration for his story in Scream five. Plus he went out on his terms as a hero. He’s also a side character technically speaking. The main character in the first four films is Sidney Prescot

      They killed him off like he was a nobody. And that was such a waste.

      @@EricCarter12 Dewey has always been the punching bag of the scream franchise and has gotten his ass kicked in demoralizing ways in every movie he’s in. He was a doofus in Scream 1, gets overpowered by Mrs. Loomis in scream 2, gets instantly knocked out by the butt end of Roman’s knife in scream 3 in literally the stupidest scene in the entire franchise, overpowered and knocked out by Jill with a bed pan in scream 4, and finally killed in scream 5. What the hell are you talking about? Besides Dewey did go out in a poetic way. He couldn’t save his younger sister in the first and he goes out saving the main character’s younger sister. There was nothing disrespectful about it at all. He was part of the trio, yes, but he was not the main character. Sidney was. The most iconic character other than Sidney is Ghostface himself. Scream 5 and 6 were successful and kept the spirit of what scream is. Scream has always been a meta commentary on horror tropes and movie cliches. Dewey is a bad example to use as a icon when most die hard scream fans will agree that Dewey should’ve died earlier in the series. The only thing that would’ve been disrespectful in scream 5 is if they killed Sidney off. The series in the first four movies is about Sidney, not Dewey. Dewey is the punching bag. He gets his ass kicked in every movie he’s in and nothing can change that fact.

    • @alexholden2512
      @alexholden2512 Год назад +1

      @@EricCarter12 Another thing: Dewey surviving was becoming a cliché in of itself. Scream has always made fun of cliches and tries to break certain ones. Dewey dying does have weight to it because it comes more out of nowhere and is genuinely shocking. It’s also probably the best looking kill in the franchise.
      Also Dewey shouldn’t be roped into this video because he wasn’t being killed to be replaced. Indy is clearly being replaced by Phoebe Waller bridge. Luke and Han were being replaced by Rey. Dewey is in a horror series. You should always expect any character to die in a horror movie in any way possible. Also scream is from an entirely different studio and company. This video was about the deconstruction of Indiana Jones and what Disney keeps doing to its legacy characters. I agree with everything else in this video, I just don’t agree with using Dewey as an example.
      Luke, Han and Indiana Jones are action adventure heroes. Dewey is a naive goofball in a horror series that is more grounded in reality than Star Wars and Indiana Jones. I just don’t think he works as an example for what you were talking about in the video. I view Dewey very differently from Indy and Luke. I totally buy him getting distracted by his phone because that’s what his character basically is.
      Again I agree with just about everything else in this video relating to Indiana Jones and lucasfilm/Disney. I’m someone who loves crystal skull. Not as much as the other three but I think it’s a solid film. And everything you said in support of Crystal Skull I agreed with. I just think Dewey is a bad example with consideration to the type of series he’s from
