I was just there 2 days ago. The canals were not blue but murky. Still rad to see these in the Salt Flats though. FYI, take exit 4 and go North to the gas station near the freeway. That road will take you back about 1/4 mile to one of the canals. This is public land and also the road that takes you back to the Salt Flats Raceway. Great little stop for some cool photos and the opportunity to drive on the Flats at any speed you like. Just make sure you stay on the road during the winter/early spring or you will get stuck in the mud out there.

I've worked in the potash mines in British Columbia and we had ponds like this on site. The sodium content was so high that it would burn your skin if you were to touch it without protection on so I don't get why people what to kayak or even dip their feet in that water

If people are interested in visiting the waterway from BLM land, the government should try to create an access. The government shouldn't build a new exit on I-80, but if people want to go overland from another road, someone should find a way to allow that.
I just watched a video about the Blue Lagoon in Iceland. It reminded me of this, and that’s why I came here. So in Iceland, someone made a lagoon for bathing, from the mineral water that is basically a by product of a geothermal plant there. It is now part of a lush resort that makes a ton of money from tourists. This seems like a missed opportunity to me. These owners could probably make a ton of money if they made these canals safe for people, put in a parking lot and charged a nice entrance fee.
State highway right of way is 30 feet. As long as ya park more than 30 feet off the highway the cops shouldn't be allowed to say much. Get the property owners permission to park tho.
I believe these canals are part of the reason that the Bonneville Salt Flats are deteriorating. They extract the potash and it affects the quality of the salt, which leads to problems with the surface of the flats and leads to problems for the speed record races held annually on the flats.
