Wow Margot, what a superb cover of one of my favourite songs of all time. Perfect background setting too, it sets the scene for this gentle melancholic classic played beautifully on a 12 stringed acoustic. Mick and Keith would be very proud of your interpretation. ❤️
Absolutely nail the 12 string. Vocal is much better than Jagger's. Sorry Mick. Much sadder, much more soulful.

I remember where I was, and who I was with, when I first heard this song: I was with my earliest childhood friend, Jonathan, and my late brother Charles. Jonathan and I, when we were kids, had a little rock band, called-"Child's Play". My late brother: Sometime during the 90s, he found himself one morning at Keith Richards' house. They used to spend the night together at his house, playing their acoustics, watching movies, hanging out; and the next morning, Keith's mother came into the room, and told a story about how, in the early days of The Stones, Keith got kicked out of the band, and came home, crying. And then there's my old girlfriend, Margot: She met The Stones in Boston during their 'Exile On Main Street' tour. She attended a party with them, and she wanted to meet Mick Jagger, but he didn't show up. So, there was my brother, about 20 years later, at Keith Richards' house with his acoustic. There was a house rule: No Stones tunes. Keith said-'Charlie, we are not playing any Stones tunes together; don't even try it!' But he broke that rule once; and Margot Cotten you might want to try this song. It's one of The Stones most beautiful songs, imho: 'Backstreet Girl'.

Most people who know the song have two versions in mind--from the Stones and Marianne Faithfull. But you add a lot to it. For starters, there's that lovely wide-angled outdoors video, totally different from other such music videos, because the starting point is the mood of the tune--in this case, wistful, maybe sad, self-reflective. When you begin making your way around the twelve-strings chords, we are already anticipating, with you, and in the zone. All of these. Yours is a distinctly plaintive take on As Tears Go By--quiet and deliberately understated. But you understand its story, play it well, and enjoy bringing it up to another level. Poetic magic is the phrase.

It is a pleasure both listening to and watching your playing and singing, Margot. You play with the accomplished ease of a naturally talented (but also the skills of a well-practised) musician. As a 'would-be' player I confess I gave up trying to pick on my twelve-string as I kept hitting the wrong strings and didn't have the patience to persevere. It is with this in mind that I do really appreciate your skilled picking on this lovely song. Thank you for making my evening better, Margot.
BTW, what's up with the odd shoes? Is this a new fashion? I think I've seen other young people doing it, so it may be the cool new look. Also, I'm too old to indulge in this new trend. They would just think it was a sign of early dementia and stick me in a old folks home!
They are called espadrilles. My grand parents used to wear those and I always had pairs ever since I was a kid.
@@margotcotten I mis-phrased my question, Margot. I know about espadrilles because they are much older than me! Going back to the 13th century but popularised slightly later by Yves Saint Laurent. (I looked that up, LOL) I meant 'odd' in the sense that one appears to be red while the other is black. I have noticed other young people wearing mismatched shoes before and wondered if it was a fashion trend.
I have never been 'cool' myself but I think you are definitely cool, Margot. I love your fashion sense as well as your music. I'm judging only from your videos, of course. I'm guessing you got your style from your artistic/ musical family? ... or is it that French people are just naturally more stylish? Probably! 😎

My father told me that he was there with the Rolling Stones in Berlin in 1965 when the fans tore the Waldbühne apart and destroyed everything... crazy times in the past but also nostalgic... something that would never happen again today... thank you for your beautiful Music.....
