Learn how to play As Tears Go By, as performed by The Rolling Stones released as a single in December 1965, though they did give to Marianne Faithful to record/release the previous year.
The lesson covers the chords and picking nuances that Keith Richards employs on the acoustic 12 string that we hear on the record. A great song for beginning players but perfectly enjoyable at any player level.

at 0:35 you mention that you believe "Yesterday" by the Beatles was the template for the Stones to come out with an acoustic ballad with strings. I asked their producer Andrew Loog Oldham about this by email several years ago. He wrote that the Stones recorded "As Tears Go By" because they needed a new single for the American market which required more single releases than the UK. He mentioned that it was "hardly a response" to "Yesterday". Remember this, Marianne Faithfull originally recorded "As Tears Go By" in the summer of 1964, which has an acoustic guitar and strings, and that was about nine months before Paul McCartney finished writing "Yesterday". The Stones version is slightly different from hers as they are not going to make it exactly the same. The song is a ballad, an acoustic guitar and strings fit the song. It's not uncommon to use instruments like acoustic guitar and/or strings in ballads. Also, Keith Richard mentions that he wrote "As Tears Go By" with an acoustic guitar.
Great insight!
Why can’t there be a quick introduction play through before the instruction starts? Would be nice to hear the song first.
The acoustic 12 is a very underrated but essential part of the early stones sound. Great job Doug!
Also, loving the stache 👨🏻
I never get tired of the Stones
Wow! That is one of my favorites. I could never get the picking down. Thanks!
This is the best instructional video with the twelve string. Thank you so much. I'd love to be your student
someday could you look at mercy mercy…..maybe comparing JIMI’S Work with Don Covey versus Brian and Keith….as usual great work bro!
Thanks for the lesson Chain! 👍 Another great early Stones tune you might consider breaking down is "Heart of Stone"
Mike Leander wrote and arranged the strings on this song. The same Mike Leander that a year later would write arrange and produce She's Leaving Home by The Beatles.
That guitar sounds great!🎵
Thanks for another year of spreading joy through your great lessons!
Thank you so much! Glad you enjoyed!
Thank you for making it easy to follow!!
That was the first song Mick and Keith wrote together. Andrew Loog Oldham locked them in a room and wouldn’t let them out until they finnished. (Allegedly 😆)
As Tears Goes by was 1964 release… a year *before* Yesterday….
What a lovely sounding guitar
I have a Boss Acoustic Simulator 2 I broke out yesterday while learning Angie on one of your previous videos. I played Angie so much yesterday my daughter said “ it was in her spine”.
Another great lesson! If you get a chance, could you do “Let it Loose?” I’d love another reason to use that Ventilator II you talked me into!😁
Awesome work. Would be fun to see you describe another, Let it Loose from Exile on Main Street.
Beautiful. From Brazil. Thanks.
I don't know how accurate this is, but I believe this is the first original song that Mick and Keith wrote together. I heard a story that they realised the Stones would never be a success if they continued to do only covers, so they sat down together to write an original song... and this was the result.
Yeah I heard that same story, I think it may have been The Last Time though in terms of the song.
@@12footchain Gotcha. I won't Google it because I don't want to be wrong, and I don't want you to be wrong, either. I like a little mystery. ✌️🇦🇺
素晴らしい👍️分かりやすいです😵🎉
What gauge of strings do you use and do you tune down your 12 ….
Hi - no don't tune down, I use light gauge 10-47. Specifically these sweetwater.sjv.io/LXyEyV
Thank you….
Drive google tab ❤❤❤ forever
One of their best songs
in 1969 my parents got me a Framus Texan 12 string..... which I stlill play to this day. John played hide your love away on a framus 12. s Tears go by is one of the first songs I learned to play on it.
Thank you Doug!
I was in 8th grade when they cut this track----it's a favorite of mine.
Keep those lessons coming please.
Great job!
Howard correct you make it look easy as does Clapton have learned much I little time thanks.
Awesome video have a wonderful day also I have a cold 🤧
Thanks for this vid. Excellent, as always.
You are using a 12 String guitar but the cord diagrams are for a 6 string guitar….are the other 6 strings just for show?
its all the same. the 12 string is just 6 pairs of strings, the fingering is the same. so where it shows 1 string on my chart, on a 12 string guitar there is actually 2 strings there. I just didn't want to create new fretboard charts that had 12 strings on it. chord shapes in here are the same for either a 6 or 12 string.
Thank you very much.

Always good Brother😊
Love early Stones era!!!!
Great one, thanks.
Thanks
Thank you!
Thanks!
Thank you!
John Lennon always said in the “early days” The Rolling Stones just copied the Beatles.
And ?
Well, the fans didn't seem bothered by it
Mick was more of a front man for the band, where all the Beatles sang lead and harmonies as far as performance, but maybe copied Beatles template for writing songs
