Amazing as always! I have learned so much from you, Vanessa. I just retired from teaching high school for 33 years, so I’ve seen umpteen approaches to teaching. And you? Truly amazing in so many ways. I cannot believe that I can sew in a zipper complete with zipper tabs now. At first I had to watch the video several times, and now with practice I’m on my own. It’s great fun, and I’m happily sewing!
I have two comments that could help as well. Add a small dumbbell weight on the top edge of your ruler. It will help you hold the ruler in place and focus more on your cutting hand. Second, use an ergonomic rotary cutter like Martellis. It allows you to follow the natural motion of your arm and shoulder, and prevent excessive curving.
Even though I've been sewing and quilting for quite a while I always watch "beginner" videos from you as there is always something to learn. This time something to share. The cutting mat can also be an issue- not if it's new-but if you tend to line up and cut on the lines even self healing mats can get hard spots from cutting. So if you're new but maybe have a hand me down cutting mat this could also be a problem. Two solutions that I have learned are I use your double ruler technique for cutting - only using the line to align my fabric- not to cut on, and turning my mat so I'm not always cutting in the same area. I treated myself to a new mat recently and it was amazing the difference it made! Thanks for all of your great tutorials!
I was going to mention this too. I'm so frugal (cheap) I tend to use a mat as long as possible & yes, we do tend to use the same lines. Speaking of which, I need a new mat. Haha
Glad I watched the video. My ruler generally moves as I am cutting. I will have to remember the "walk walk walk" up the ruler. Most of the time I don't get a good clean cut. Always have to go over it again. Your tips are amazing. Now I am going to have change the way I hold the rotary cutter. Can't wait now to start cutting and listening to that sound of the rotary cutter cutting away.....LOL. Thank you Vanessa.
Thanks for this excellent video tutorial Vanessa! My favourite part was the “walk, walk, walk” your fingers up the ruler. It’s a hugely important part of the process. You described my cutting errors perfectly. :D I love your tutorials!! Just finished making my SECOND gorgeous Butterick 6214 top, thanks to your amazing and wonderful videos! So perfect for beginners.
Thank you! This has happened to me almost every time I cut. Sadly I also cut my expensive mat rolling back and forth trying to fix those wrong cuts. But, now I know, and I just turned my mat around.
Thank you. I'm struggling with this. In my case I've hardly started as I've just only made a mat for under my machine...my 1st project so the blade isn't dull yet. I will def try your technique. Thanx much :D
I enjoyed the video and have learned something new about using the rotary cutter and I have on just like the one you used here. With what you have showed us I can make my cuts with less mistakes and you are so awesome with your ability to teach others in quilting and I keep learning more as I go along.
Thank you so very much for these tips. Am getting a new rotary cutter and mat on Wednesday. Have quite a few projects I'm wanting to work on, and, was wondering about ALL the things you mentioned in your video, here. Thank you again for it. Happy crafting to you. 😉♥️
Thank you. I rarely use mine and it's just been sitting around and now that I'm using it I can hear it and then it stops like I've done nothing. LOL I need a blade looks like. You are a great teacher :)
So helpful! Wondered way I keep missing those bits. Kept changing blades but same thing was happening. I put it down to being left handed but I will keep this in mind now. Thanks Vanessa!
I love your videos. I still have this problem once in a while. A friend watched me and I have a bad habit of canting the cutter as I'm rolling up so each spot I hit at an angle is uncut. I need to keep the blade 90 degrees to the fabric. Still working on it lol
Perfect Vanessa thank you doll❣ 🤗💞 not keeping my arm up just enough all the time. Most the bit once and a while, was so frustrating. But another thing that caused that fluctuation for me, I'm TALL. LOL I was working at a table fold out ( one of those portable numbers ). It was hitting me in all the wrong places. It was even putting a wrench in my back so badly(it's a mess from being ran over multiple, 4 plus, times by a car🤪 lol God is Good) Because im not able to purchase a proper table..a lil ingenuity at play. I use giant tomatoe sauce cans to lift the table up a bit higher. It's not the best because even with the gripper shelf lining I had and repurposed😉, Where there's a will ... right! They still slide around on tile. Anyway, it was the angle in which I was standing (still do on occasion) and leaning left me dropping my arm. It all started to kicked in the first vid you released. As I'm watching this one lol it was very apparent.. like a snap. I could see myself standing and leaning to avoid pain. Not as bad with cans. Lolol betcha never thought you'd hear that phrase ... lolololol i never dreamt of saying it let shopping texting it in wide open spaces. Hahaaa standing in faith for an adjustable height table that folds out and tucks away. 🙏🏻 Thank you for dropping this addition💞💞💞💞💞💞💞
I didn't use my rotary cutter for 1.5 years and it got dull even if I just bought and used it once. It didn't cut at all but just created a crease on the fabric. Really amazing because the cutter is of Clover 🍀, quite a good one so ²⁶⁶²4x⁵⁷
Another tip that helps me is to lock the blade in the engaged position rather than squeezing the handle and cutting simultaneously. I find I make more cutting errors when I’m doing both.
thank you...this happens to me all the time..but I think I press so hard that I make a groove in thr cutting mat..I tend to cut many things on the same measurment and make an indentation on the cutting mat ! EVEN THOUGH it is a "self healing" mat !
Great tips on using Rotary Cutter. Do you have any recommendations as to what Rotary Cutter to use. I have 2 already myself, one I purchased from Project Linus & like this one more than my Fiskars one I've had for awhile.
Great advice! I want to get an acrylic ruler but I keep slicing into my rulers (wooden and/or plastic) and don't want to waste money. Anyone have any suggestions? Thanks.
So here's my question: My cutter only cuts as a fixed blade. Is the razor wheel supposed to stay still and just use that one piece of blade to cut? The blade is held on with a friction nut and when moved and locked outside the safety guard, it does not roll. Obviously this is a dumb question, but I would think the wheel would actually roll on that nut. That is why I'm looking at how to use a rotary cutter videos. But my question is not being answered by what I'm seeing. Maybe you can clear this up for me.
The way you teach is awesome! Very clear and easy to understand. Thank you!

Just what I needed to get the full clean cut the first time! Thank you.
Love that you mentioned the sound. Thank you. Great tip.

Thanks. This is the first video that actually showed the angle and motion needed.
Exactly what I use to teach my students - the sound is the clue to how effective one's cut is!
You are an amazing person and I am grateful for your teaching skills. You are truly a Blessings to us.
Well you had this beginner pegged. Thank you so much for taking the time to help us all out!
I messed up my first time in exactly the way you described. This video made such a difference for me. Thanks!
I'm going to make sure I use my cutter this way from now on! Thank you!
Thank you so much, this has been my biggest problem and has really discouraged me. I'm going to give it another shot!
Thank you. I'm struggling with this. In my case I've hardly started as I've just only made a mat for under my machine...my 1st project so the blade isn't dull yet. I will def try your technique. Thanx much :D

Thank-you that was very helpful
I love love love your tutorials. Time foe Roman blinds plzzzzzzzzzzz🌺🌺🌺🌺❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️
V--If you're blade is worn- flip it over for continued use. The other side does not give as much cut, but it does work.

Thanks, great tips!
The sound helped. I want to try because I can’t cut straight lines with any of my rotary cutters
Love that sound THANKS

Thanks that helps.
Merci!!!!!
My straight edge moves.
thank you for sharing.
Thank you
Nice one mam
Very good video. Tk you i will try ... and let you know 😊
Dankeschön 👍🌹❤️👵🏻
Thank you great tips, many thanks.
Thank you!
Please show us with scissors and rotary cutter how to cut longer than ur ruler too pls 😃
You can sharpen the blades also
I haven’t figured out how to use the rotary cutter with a ruler yet. When I do, I’m sure I’ll have an aha moment and then it will be easy.
My ruler moves. I guess I don’t have the arm strength to apply enough pressure for longer cuts.
Cutting mat is a must for cutting
Im not Able to cut fabric
I have a question, when you cut the fabric with the circular cutter, dont you get the scratches on the cutting board?
Where can I get to buy the rotary set
Thank you so much!
I just bought mine today and guess what? Yes I couldn’t cut it right.
☺️😊
What you say that's in you table that colour is green I want to know please tell what is that green green where you are working
What kind of rotary cutter are you using?

I hve seen so many video for this even I like..but want to know is that mat is nessasary..without mat how we can use cutter
Yes. You have to use a self healing mat with this type of rotary cutter or you will damage the blade and your work surface.
@@TheCraftyGemini tks mam..I l do that..or any other option..I dnt hve swing machine so I am planing to take this nd hot glue machine also
Vanessa how do you suggest people hold the rotary cutter if the aren't able to stand to make the cut?
a lower than average cutting table might work?
You have talented fingers, please wear a cutting glove.
M
Why are you yelling!?!
Do you have tips on squaring your fabrics?
