Shadharon and Adi Brahmo Samaj & Hindutva and Nationalism | Kanchan Gupta |

Kanchan da elaborates on the split between the Adi (puritan) and Shadharon Brahmo Samaj. The arrangement was a happy one and the latter attracting the greatest of poets, scientists, artists and writers of the times. How the peak and decline of the Samaj can be traced to the life and death of Rabindranath Tagore. How Chandranath Basu's first use of the term Hindutva along with Rajnarain Bose's treatise of the superiority of Hinduism as formulated by Brahmo thought addressed to the Orthodoxy of the times come together to give the most significant impetus to Nationalism. How as opposed to Savarkar who referred to India as his fatherland it is Abanindranath Tagore and his depiction in painting of Bharat Mata that became the pervasive idea and inspiration for all other depictions of India as Bharat Mata then on.
