  • Cook, Philippa Vine, presents the features of the ESSE 1000 X electric range cooker and highlights how to prepare dishes in an economically energy-use-conscious way. Philippa prepares a roast chicken served with broccoli and bread sauce, a cheesecake topped with rhubarb, and a roast potato hash.
The ESSE 1000 X features a three-zone induction hob with touch-top controls for the provision of instant efficient heat. The level of control is immediate for increasing and decreasing the temperature. ESSE heat store ovens benefit from power share engineering, a technology that is unique to ESSE. It only uses power where and when you need it, sharing the energy equally between all cooking zones. This offers faster heat-up times and keeps running costs to a minimum. Within the top right oven of the ESSE electric range cooker is a full-width grill. Enhanced by ESSE's hot oven, grilling a dish can be an effective way to reduce your energy consumption when cooking. Using cast iron cookware helps to retain the moisture in the food and with it undoubtedly more flavours and nutrients. Cast irons' ability to retain heat enables you to reduce cooking times on the hob or in the oven, as the dish will continue to cook once presented to the dining table.
ESSE range cookers are designed for 'always on' use, a true heat storage range cooker, it is designed to operate from a minimum temperature for two reasons. The first is that it enables much faster heat-up times and an ESSE is built of substantial construction rather like a heavy car in traffic, it is more efficient when it doesn't have to stop. In Philippa's large cookery demonstration area in East Sussex the ESSE 1000 X energy use was 90p for 12 hours on the slumber or minimum setting using 2.5 kW in a cold room without another source of warmth. When Philippa had her Ironheart wood-burning stove fired up in the same space the 1000 X used 2.2 kW. During the preparation of all the dishes showcased in the video monitored energy use was just 1.5 kW (40p). (Prices quoted based on UK electricity rates March 2023).

How true is it that it is cheaper to leave the cooker on all day, just a little bit rather than keeping it off and turning it on when you need it..?

I have one and uses about 6-7 kw of energy on slumber with about 3 hours of cooking, the cooker will give off heat which which I use for dry clothes and ironing on the top. You really need to multi task your esse for it to be efficient as possible but having a esse or any cast iron range is a want… not a need. If you leave it to go cold it will use about 1.5-2 kw just to heat it back up… so depends how much the esse is used… but I would say if you don’t use it much then why have one.
