My parents got me this for Christmas that year. I remember being in my room and playing it for almost 10 hours straight. I remember jut standing outside at night, staring up at the sky and seeing the northern lights, the moons, and the stars coupled by the music, and being completely mesmerized by it’s beauty. Not a big deal to others but it was for me.
I remember playing it for the first time and deciding to explore a little bit before trying to figure where I was supposed to go and after what seemed like forever, just stumbling out of the woods into this wide open plains area; it was near evening and overcast/cloudy and a whole other world and atmosphere. Had same feeling, 'wow' and just being overwhelmed by it-as well as wondering if I was even 'supposed' to be there 'yet'. I think I'd found a horse somewhere and I just rode around for a time staring at everything. It seemed so huge back then.
I can't believe Skyrim came out almost 10 years ago. I remember playing Skyrim that winter and Christmas like it was yesterday. Crazy. It's been almost 10 years and I vividly remember almost every detail about it.
Saika I got Skyrim a year or so after it’s release for Christmas and I remember playing it on my older brother’s Xbox 360 in his room and he bought this really nice smelling Glade air freshener called Cashmere Woods that he would spray in his room after cracking open the window and it smelled like cinnamon and pine so it would usually smell like that as I felt the cold wind come in from outside while I would play Skyrim which would really immerse me into the world. Now anytime I play Skyrim during winter I buy some of that air freshener spray it, open the window to let the cold air in, and I play Skyrim and it takes me back to being 11 years old and exploring Skyrim with that sense of wonder, awe, and peace that I had when I played it as a kid.
Saika you should start playing again, especially since more and more passion projects for expansion/dlc sized mods are becoming a common occurrence. Skyblivion and beyond skyrim will be the craziest mods to ever release, far surpassing the mods of other games too
Starting the game up for the first time, when before you know it half a day had passed; and you realize the game would never get old. On top of that music is still one of the greatest game soundtracks of all time.
I love the music in Skyrim, seriously, it's so good. I love Skyrim in general too, I find it hilarious whenever I mention that on RUclips and you get 20 people responding trying to convince you why it sucks. Lol. I don't care, I like what I like.
@@Highostrich I don't know who could hate skyrim. I've played morrowind, oblivion and skyrim. It's hard to choose between which one I like the best, they're all great even with all their flaws.
Is it still worth playing oblivion? I have several hundred hours in skyrim and dont know if that would diminish my enjoyment for oblivion if i were to play it.
@@John-iu9kl I would not recommend oblivion as it doesn't have mods or any good mods so graphics are pretty old for most people . Not too much deep story and side quests like Skyrim . Skyrim is much bigger and better , you can watch some videos for lore of oblivion , but Skyrim is on another level .
@@John-iu9kl I would say that it's worth playing. The factions and side quests are much better in Oblivion and the Magic system is also a lot better in Oblivion like you can make your own spells and stuff in Oblivion. But at the end of the day it's your choice.

Reputation nowadays is like the weather, always changing. Who cares if you made 2 extremely good franchises that everyone love and have some of the most played games ever? If you mess up one game it's over for you. For me bethesda still has the reputation. Attempting something new and hard and failing should never be punished like this.
I remember 2012 when there was a rumor about how Elder scrolls 6 wouldn't be released until 2016. I thought I couldn't wait for 4 more years. Now it's 2020 and there's still no release date 😫
And hopefully Bethesda delivers something that's better than RDR2 or even GTA6, since they wanna take this long it better be the best game of all time with a new engine not the same crappy old one that they've used forever
As of right now I believe Rockstar is the best game maker RDR2 was am astonishing game and was one of the most anticipated games of all time if not the most anticipated game, and Rockstar has the 2 most profitable titles of all time right now, this being GTA5 that has made ove 1B in its time and RDR2 that made just over 700M on release

And I genuinely hated hearing all the fan boys talk about it and wearing all the Skyrim merch without A playing it and B without playing a single other elder scrolls game and not know that they even existed. And Bethesda really milked Skyrim dry
Idc what everybody thinks, imo skyrim is the game of the decade in the 2010's. It's pretty obvious that even after almost 9 years, it is still significant and have outplayed games that are more recent than it. Edit: i know most of you would say witcher 3 is far better, and i agree with you. I played and love both games, witcher has better graphics, better story and prolly better overall, but skyrim has that magic in it that i can't explain. Even though i replayed witcher 3 several times, it still lead me back to skyrim and create a new playthrough that will somehow turned-out to be a sneaky archer. But tbh skyrim is one of those games that you'll always remember and never get bored replaying.
Witcher 3 is good for if you want to play an amazing story with incredible characters, but Skyrim is good for if you want to experience an awesome world through your own eyes. Skyrim, to me, remains better than the Witcher 3 simply because you can be anyone you want in Skyrim, but you're always seeing the world through Geralt's eyes in The Witcher.
@@elise205 agree, even though the witcher's story is great, you'll always be a 2 sword monster hunter. Unlike skyrim, you can be whatever you want to be, either a sneaky elf archer, dual-axed orc berserker, a healer magician breton or just simply play a normal nord dragonborn. It's the reason why skyrim is one of my favorite game, if not my favorite.

I just started Skyrim for the first time ever yesterday. Its definitely a last gen game with the story and combat, but the exploration, the lack of handholding, the crafting/cooking/alchemy is all really cool. I’m going in blind, but so far so good. I like that the world levels with you, for the most part. You never walk into an area and are completely out of your element, not belonging there. Except for this giant I ran into that smashed me with one hit. That happens though.
Tsyuna Desu Skyrim came out in 2011 and has sold about 30 million copies. Witcher 3 came out in 2015 and has sold about 25 million copies so I'd say your claim is quite exaggerated. I'm also gonna go out on a limb and assume your kid. Skyrim is a simpler game that children can understand so I can see why it would appeal more.
@@codyvandal2860 I mean I understand your opinion the witcher 3 is a great game. But I must say skyrim is not a simple game. Sure some of its quest can be boring, but its lore is what makes it complex. the daedric princes, the dragon war, Alduins War and if we we're as to go as far as Elder Scrolls Universe Lore then The heart of Nirn, Sovngaurde and even Akavir. There is a lot more complexity to Skyrim then you think. Witcher 3 and Skyrim are both fantastic games and don't get me wrong the witcher has some good lore too. But you must consider that Skyrim is a 8 year old game the witcher 3 is a 4 year old game. So think about it this way skyrim is old and it stills has a massive following and you have to give it props for that. All in all These games are both great but it's quite dumb to compare the both despite the age difference so be more considerate even if this person is a kid or not

How to make money with Skyrim on RUclips: 1: Skyrim was a big deal 2: Oblivion and Morrowind are also games 3: Skyrim has flaws 4: Skyrim is still great 5: Skyrim has dope mods 6: Profit
Mods weren’t the reason why people bought Skyrim. Mods were unavailable on PS3 and Xbox 360 and sold very well nonetheless. And of course no mods were available at launch, when the game sold very well.
I never finished skyrim either and I don't regret it. I played the shit out it and the side quests were always more interesting than the crappy political, predictable main story. I will never finish the game, it feels so old already. I enjoyed when it mattered.
tons of games have modders yet most arent nearly as big as skyrim is. skyrim at its base is still amazing game. no need to give modders all the credit lol
Jody Boles I strongly disagree on that. Base skyrim barely functions as a game with the nearly infinite bugs and their future games showed how much they relied on modders to fix things.
@Baxter Powel lol thats so wrong because the game was still very popular and fun even on console. its still a massive and great game with or without mods.

Tbh I think Skryim as a whole has aged really well. I've had a hard time finding other open world titles that strike me in the same way (other than Witcher 3). The art style and even the stock graphics have held up well in my opinion.

Skyrim was amazing because it's the first game that did open world in a high fantasy setting at a grand scale Also, because it made sneak archery super OP
I will never forget how I downloaded this game in the Winter holidays 2011, started it and it just blew my mind. I kept playing it from morning until I had to sleep for almost 2 weeks and it felt like the best gaming experience I ever had in my whole life. 10 years later I still haven't played any other game that gave me this feeling.
I remember as a kid just getting lost in the vast land of Skyrim, and discovering new things about the world and the people in it. The is was also my first Elder Scrolls game and it was a great first impression.
Ah you think darkness is your ally? You merely adopted the dark. I was born in it, molded by it. I didn't see the light until I was already a man, by then it was nothing to me but blinding!
Skyrim had the biggest impact on my life out of any game. I remember when I first saw the trailer I thought it looked so STUPID!!! I hated medieval fantasy and thought that it was for losers. I was at a friends house they had a small drinking party and the game was out for only a week and told me to play I protested saying how I hated that genre, then I said fine I’ll try it and to this day one of my fondest memory. Since I knew nothing about medieval fantasy like trolls, magic, elves, dragons etc. this was my intro to that genre. I was a little drunk and it was 8 years ago but I still remember that day so clearly and being so immersed just in the 3 hours I played while they all ended up passing out. Now today I love medieval fantasy and still exploring new worlds, like now I’m finally giving the witcher a try and I loved lotr, and enjoyed most of GoT, and read the first book of The Wheel of Time. I’d probably never have given these a try if it wasn’t for me caving into good peer pressure and trying out skyrim.
I'm constantly sucked into the elder scrolls universe, it's just so well written and rich with lore and potential. I recently wrote a whole small kingdom in the jeral mountains south of Skyrim, based in geothermic canyons, which my character, an imperial, Skyrim-born Dragonborn takes hold of and leads as king while preparing to take over the ruby throne via a siege. Even on the switch, the game is stunning and immersive, and because of this deep attachment and expectations, other games fail to impress me and hold my attention for more than a few months. Breath of the wild was amazing, but after a while the emptiness and lack of serious worldbuilding and deep character creation get old, the puzzles were fun but it's definitely not that replayable. If full dive and ai generated quests and the freedom to do whatever comes to the elder scrolls, I'd love to replay as a dragon soul-devouring badass who is able to make my written kingdom come to life.
Skyrim is still going very strong. Myself and many of my friends replay it often. I still get amazed by the gorgeous landscapes, music, and the variety of areas and biomes and all the 1000s of little unique beautifully detailed areas. The game is so engrossing it's just amazing how free you are to go and do whatever you want- make your own story.
I remember walking down a mountain and running into a few bandits trying to rob me and I had just unlocked the freeze spell and froze them all into a cube it was amazing. Loved that game.
So true, it was like the side quests are the main quest and the main quest was the optional bonus. Still haven't beat the game or want to to even try to. There's so much to do, so much to learn its exhausting. So many hours spent exploring and dicking around I'd constantly forget what exactly was going on or what i needed to do to progress the main story.
"the genre has kind of left the game in the dust" "have far surpassed Skyrim" :o What did I miss? I'd love to play a game that provides a similar experience to Skyrim. Can someone tell me games that surpassed and left Skyrim in the dust? Thank you.
Won't say that it left skyrim in the dust but the witcher 3 did surpass it.Not by a really big margin, but it did take the top spot and is yet to be dethroned(as the number 1 fantasy RPG).
There is none lol I played everything the Witcher 3 has to offer and I prefer Skyrim. Like the only ones that say TW3 is better to have probably not played Skyrim to its fullest. I don't know man like I am playing Skyrim right now doing the dawn guard quest just met Serena. I have modded it so my experience is far more enjoyable than vanilla which is already good. Like people are sleeeeeeping on Skyrim especially these kids. Also, Witcher 3 is more talked about just because it was released 5 years ago and Skyrim 10 years ago of course Witcher 3 would be the topic of the RPG genre but I don't know man Witcher 3 is so forgettable even though I love it I have forgotten so many events and the DLC's are sooooo baaaaad I prefer the main story but oh well that's just my opinion
@@exiledcowboy298 I feel similarly, adding up the latest numbers on my different saves, it seems that I played Skyrim for 930 hours at least, I like it, but I didn't get further than the first few hours in the Witcher 3, I didn't like it.

My computer can't run 2077 smooth enough, so I decided to play Skyrim again in 2020, and learn how to mod it properly with Nexus and Vortex and LOOT and stuff. Since I never actually played the game with Unofficial Skyrim Patch before. And, wow. It's really just Skyrim. As in, it became really clear why Bethesda just keep selling this game over and over again. Like, although the graphics aren't that impressive by 2020 standards, the amount of information and content per in game square feet is still really really impressive. As in, all the random NPC here and there just wandering around, so many unique characters. And after playing the game for multiple times, you can really remember all of them, like what they do, what's their back story, how they can help you, etc. etc. You can easily recall at least a few dozen off your head. And detailed NPCs like those, there is like... let me check wiki... [Pages in category "Skyrim-NPCs" 1,455 total.] Yeah, at least a thousand. And they are pretty much all quite memorable, like Mr. "Do you go to the cloud district often?" or "That NPC called Angi, she lives south of Falkreath and teaches you 6 free levels in archery". Yeah, I don't think there are a lot of games that can do this.
It was the first RPG I actually dove into and replayed more times than I can remember. Now I love RPGs and I am always searching for that "lost in the world" feel that Skyrim gave me the first time I played it.
i remeber the first time i played skyrim iin a gaming cafe and i was blown away by the vastness of the game, i just had finished the tutorial but realizing that there was so much to do in the small amount of hours that i played it simply made me want to get it for myself and play it. at the time couldnt since i didnt have a good pc for it, so i stacked it like all other games i was stacking. so when i finally got to play it a couple of years later.... oh boy how rewarding was to wait all those years. now i dont play it as often but i do enjoy every rerun i do with a new iteration of choices. it took me one whole year to finish the main stuff. that feat for me says a lot of a game by itself
Bought Skyrim: Remastered on Steam, finally got a PC I feel can do it justice. Now I'm just anxious about how much time I can devote to it. It's a massive world that I want to get immersed in, but at the same time real life wants to go "Hey, how you doin?"
Get the high resolution texture pack's, unofficial skyrim patch, skse, skyui, and tk dodge. Boom. Stable and refreshing because tk dodge adds a new dodge system to skyrims sad vanilla combat. I also personally recommend vigor combat and injuries.
The sheer amount of EVERYTHING when I first played it. How it all starts, escape from Helgen, the beauty of Riverwood and world around it. The FPS aspect of sword fighting, it was new at the time, at least for me. All these quests, stories.. becoming a werewolf, vampire.. possibilities to do so much. Don't have enough words to do this game justice.
That could be the easiest and hardest answer at the same time. When I first played Skyrim, it truly felt as if I was learning to live in that world. Each character had their own history, schedule, affinity towards the player... It was so rich in details that I just couldn't stop playing and going deeper in that lore. The immersion presented in that game is still unique in so many levels that even today it is a game that endured the test of time and still enjoyable. The easy answer? Because it was a game made to absorb the player and made them learn about the world. The more complicated answer: it just feels like you are living in the game and you don't even understand how that is possible.
IMO here's what did it. The fact that you can have a spell in 1 hand and a weapon in another was awesome! It felt like a truly fleshed out immersive world. It felt like you had no constraints
@@The181808 Nope, Todd Howard may be going down a dark path now, but what he did with skyrim, fallout and his other games before that, he was one of the best developers of his time.
What made Skyrim such a huge release was the sheer scale of everything. It was a enormous map, i think the biggest at the time, with an insane level of detail and lore and depth to it. It really is another world! And mods make it better, yes but the mods arent the reason why were still playing it 11 years later.

@@mikebarnes7441 not really. Last time i played was like 4 years ago, heavy with mods.

The graphics still impress me the world is full of incredibly beautiful scenery.
If full dive and ai generated quests and the freedom to do whatever comes to the elder scrolls, I'd love to replay as a dragon soul-devouring badass who is able to make my written kingdom come to life.

i had to make a save right before you make your character because of the number of times i restarted, and id remember coz i put about a hundred hours in over christmas
I will never forget the memories I was given by Bethesda through Skyrim
I've just started Skyrim reached around lvl 17 and am absolutely enjoying it
How exactly has the genre left Skyrim in the dust? It still holds up perfectly fine lol.
Nathan Erbaugh Skyrim is a part of a dying breed of rpg’s that don’t completely hold your hand. Skyrim was already leaning toward that but since then it’s gotten worse
Jake Barry what games are you talking about? RPGs that hold your hand?
@Jake Barry Doesn’t completely hold your hand? What are you talking about. I really do like Skyrim but the game lets you switch off your brain and breeze through
@@spray2816 thats what i mean. it was the first that really kinda started holding ur hand but it did not fully give in
gameranx: "what made skyrim a big deal?"
tod howard: "it just works."
Resell it for garage door openers!
To be honest, it only "just works" because of the modders who helped fix it.
@@DVankeuren the company should be ashamed for not really fixing their games post launch. Tho they pretty much acknowledged that their games are being fixed by volunteering modders.
In 2016 instead of delivering something new how about skyrim-as-a-service with same bugs n glitches like the original
Every creation club update brought nothing good but broke mods. Good thing it has stopped, for now. Paid mods is a disgrace.
@@DVankeuren The game was already good before people modded anything.
@@syminite1 I agree, I have 500+ hours without mods on PS4.
I’ve been looking for you got something I’m supposed to deliver your hands only

"Hmmm lets see here... ah a letter from a friend"
Adam Thompson. That actually wasn’t in Skyrim which was an obvious troll.
@@Filmmaker865 that line was in skyrim?
FRESH tidez. It is but it’s an Easter egg so doesn’t count
[Pages in category "Skyrim-NPCs" 1,455 total.]
Yeah, at least a thousand.
Never played an Elder Scrolls game before. I look forward to playing Skyrim this year
Play them in order 👍
You better take about an entire week at least off work.
do it
!!! Welcome to skyrim! Play how you want and don't worry about anything!
PLEASE, play every game franchise in order 🙏
i remeber the first time i played skyrim iin a gaming cafe and i was blown away by the vastness of the game, i just had finished the tutorial but realizing that there was so much to do in the small amount of hours that i played it simply made me want to get it for myself and play it. at the time couldnt since i didnt have a good pc for it, so i stacked it like all other games i was stacking. so when i finally got to play it a couple of years later.... oh boy how rewarding was to wait all those years. now i dont play it as often but i do enjoy every rerun i do with a new iteration of choices. it took me one whole year to finish the main stuff. that feat for me says a lot of a game by itself
Bought Skyrim: Remastered on Steam, finally got a PC I feel can do it justice. Now I'm just anxious about how much time I can devote to it. It's a massive world that I want to get immersed in, but at the same time real life wants to go "Hey, how you doin?"
Should've get special edition
Marcky Gaming should’ve fixed your grammar
@@bigshrimpin1322 LMAO
Yeah but in real life you can't fight dragons and throw people off of mountains with your voice lmao
Duel blades. Don't forget that.
Qew so you want them to make the definition of a sequel? Improving on the original experience? Don’t expect that from Bethesda.
What made Skyrim a big deal?
Todd Howard I know 76 was a disaster but the man is a Legend!! You can't deny that!!
The Dreamer damn bro you just had to lick the boot, not eat the whole thing!
@@The181808 Nope, Todd Howard may be going down a dark path now, but what he did with skyrim, fallout and his other games before that, he was one of the best developers of his time.
Tyler B. it is actually zenimax who is greedy, they even banned todd from programming his own games
@@uncle3127 Damn really, didn't know that.
What made Skyrim such a huge release was the sheer scale of everything. It was a enormous map, i think the biggest at the time, with an insane level of detail and lore and depth to it. It really is another world! And mods make it better, yes but the mods arent the reason why were still playing it 11 years later.
“But...there’s one they fear. In their tongue he is Dovahkiin. Dragonborn! FUS RO DAH!”
"*humming Skyrim melody*"
I got goosebumps reading this tbh
For the uninitiated, “taking an arrow in the knee” meant getting married
Is that true? Only the initiated know this?
Interesting to find myself initiated but not sure into what.
I applaud you human, for being able to type the phrase correctly. 99% of dunkies say "to the knee".
@@skylerruin it's one of those things that gets spread as true, but is actually false
Interesting. It also could mean getting shot in the knee with an arrow.
For a long time I unironically took it literally
You forgot to mention the Music !!!!
I still remember when the score - secunda - started playing for the first time, I was in the plains of whiterun doing something and I just stopped and listened to the tune, completely mesmerized by the combination of the scenery and music.
Dovahkiin
6:47 I'm the kind of guy that tries to do all the side quests currently available before pursuing the main storyline so you can imagine what happened to me. It's a game about dragons, I picked it up for the dragons but I was stuck doing side quests after side quests I never reached the dragon mounting part at all. It was still very fun and immersive tho
Lol yah I finish the entire dlc and yet to finish the main story line or civil war.
