  • When the new GWG -2000 Mudmaster was released, my first impression was... "why?" it was a cosmetic upgrade, and to me, that's just exploiting us who enjoy G-Shocks. It wasn't till I had the chance to view one in person, did my thinking change... it's like having a Land Rover and Range Rover... both tough, but both do different jobs, so consider the GWG-1000 and GWG-2000 like this... so are you a tough guy in Land Rover, or a tough city guy???
Have covered sides that haven't been covered, as that's my job, to go beyond the details, and share my findings... I hope this video helps, or just entertains you... cheers :))

Thanks for this - as always! - great review! Quality work, humor in spades and subtle things, like constantly moving the watch to let the light play on it.
I answered your questions at the beginning of the video while I was watching it and like to share this with you as "payback" and other readers for their benefit.
Q1: Do you buy the GWG1000 still?
A1: This is completely personal and easy to answer: I would honestly still prefer it as I absolutely love the raw, no-nonsense black with "military green" strap + yellow accents like on fighter plan instruments, with the red accent on the sensor seal making it look like a rocket release or something. I was never interested in any of the other GWG1000 variants, except perhaps the desert camo one to expand "the little family" (never saw a cheap price attached to it, though).
However, owning two GWG1000's already, the GWG2000 you reviewed here would be a very strong candidate for a third purchase. More on this in A3.
Q2: Should I flip my GWG1000 for the new 2k?
A2: Only if you have severe budget constraints, are deadly bored of its looks or completely nuts.
But to be more serious, I think most GWG1000 owners wouldn't flip it. It's against their nature -- as most owners didn't (only) choose it for its look. They chose it for its nature, like I did. As I've written before: My GWG1000s will survive me and will be inherited to someone who hopefully treasures them as I do. If I buy the 2k at some point, I wouldn't flip it either, though. ;-)
Q3: Should I just get the new 2k?
A3: This is actually the most complex question! ;-)
As for the tech/features my biggest "complaints" about the GWG1000 are the buttons becoming unresponsive after some time (certainly caused by the double o-ring seals), needing the "hot water treatment", and more importantly: the metal keeper which is prone to scratching on desks or tables, at least with my wrist. These problems seem to be addressed by the 2k and I especially like the new keeper. I wonder: Would it fit on a GWG1000?
On the other hand I don't need a brighter illumination (I'm the kind of person who replaces the resistor in their LCD alarm clock because the LED is too bright...) but more importantly I don't like the sapphire glass being elevated now. With my luck I would break it a bit easier than on the old model.
I also wasn't too sure about the looks and your video indeed cleared up a lot of questions I had. Still need to see it "in the flesh" but as of now I think it looks very well, handsome really, but different enough from the rawness of the GWG1000. Yes, there are other variants of the 2k and also a "military" model but it doesn't work for me at all.
As you said the original is slightly more geared for the outdoors and the 2k for city life. The latter is a bit more fitting if you wear a suit, for example, but it may still provoke questions from interested parties. With the light playing on the carbon fibers and the polished metal I see it more as a "sexy beast" while the GWG1000 is more of a "medieval workhorse beast". Both have their place but are essentially the same beast.
Your assessment about replacement costs is valuable for those folks really working with their watches, which I admittedly don't do. Whenever I'm in the woods the watch is the least of my worries. Before I would damage it, I will rip a sleeve or cut my trousers or lose something... ;-)
I need the Mudmaster because I'm a klutz sometimes and have broken several watches on door latches etc. I don't need to get in the great outdoors or in the mud (God forbid! ;-)) but I definitely need a hard watch. And, yes, my GWG1000s also have little scars.
When purchasing a watch like that we are comfortably in the "really a bit expensive for an LCD watch"-territory for regular people. Practically nobody in my circle of friends/acquaintances/colleagues would buy a watch like this. They would shell out for expensive mechanical chronometers, sure, but not a G-Shock. The closest thing to it that I've seen is a Protrek that a female(!) colleague owns (she also likes to wear her Rolex diver when she feeds her horses and cleans her stable...).
Apropos Protrek: People considering a Mudmaster should perhaps ask themselves if it really must be a beast watch or if a Protrek is all they need. The electronics are very similar, after all, and they also have a more "civilian" variant with the PRW-60T-7AER.
The real question for me is: Do I still want (a slightly tamed) beast or is a Protrek hard enough for me?
If you want the beast: The 2k is a bit more expensive than the GWG1000 but not prohibitively so. If you can only buy one watch: Buy the one you **like** the most - even if you have to save a few more months. Don't buy the GWG1000 because it is cheaper. If you still don't have one already and would prefer the 2k over it: go for the latter!
Personally, as I'm filled up to the brim with two GWG1000's already - and lots of time spent in the home office - I can't justify buying another expensive watch right now (even though I don't purchase much anyway...) But now that my interest is piqued somewhat, I will perhaps begin to have a look at Ebay later this year and decide if I want this one or a Protrek more. There are so many interesting watches out there... ;-)
So, all in all, a fantastic video, informative, helpful & entertaining: A time well spent.
    All the best, my friend!

Cheers for the support my friend... been on my wrist for a while, so could really get a decent and honest review out there... I didn't watch any reviews as I didn't want to be influenced... not seen anyone mention the creaking strap, but now I've mentioned it, a few are saying the same... but it doesn't make any noise when you don't twist it on the wrist... just needs more wrist time, which is very easy, as it's still my most worn watch :))

This is the single *best* watch review I've ever seen! (And I've seen more than I dare to admit) You point out details that virtually every other review skips, yet ones that do make a difference! (for example the tiny print for some watche's functions)
The downside is, you did cost me a chunk of cash for buying it....

    • @WatchUP69MrRangeman
      @WatchUP69MrRangeman  2 года назад

As you know I'm into the small details, also am testing the watch, not just an unboxing and have the watch for a few hours... I really used my GWG2k everyday... most days it never left my wrist, as I wanted to know if it gave me any kind of skin discomfort, but it didn't, so was pleased about that :)
I like to point the side that is often left out, maybe it's going more geek, but hey, watch fanatics need to know all this to know if it's any good... so the conclusion... I absolutely love it, and I will be treating it like a true G-Shock, and already have some marks, but that's the reason why I use G-Shocks... and am in no mind to flip my GWG2k :)
Cheers for your feedback my friend :))

If I was nit-picking, this particular variant is not quite as clear to read in some lights; the hands tend to blend in. The world time cities around the edge are also incredibly small and virtually invisible to all but very young eyes. I wish casio had displayed the city abbreviations in the lcd when scrolling. I also wish the alarms and countdown had a vibrate for use in noisy environments. Other than that, I think its perfect and it sits on my wrist 24/7 as though it is part of me.

I still must say that the ggb100 paired with the Jay's & Kay's adaptors and either a black bracelet or black and grey Camo NATO band is a thing of beauty and functionality.... Not to mention a hell of a lot easier on the pocket! By far the best of the Muddy range....

They both do the same, just that the GWG2k has a slight refinement within the module, so a slightly better LCD display and backlighting... plus the buttons are designed differently with regards to the damping... both excellent, both Master of G quality, so it's really down to the looks... I started looking into how many timezones these watches have and its interesting as to how much each one varies. If you want the smoothest movement from minute hand to minute hand you have to go with the mtg/mrg series for they have a timezone for every offset 1-14 and then -12 back to 0. But, whats interesting is watches like the analog frogman literally dont have any offsets between the 14 min hand through to the 48th. Which brings me to upgrading to this watch. Except theres a poor area as far as how many timezones you can shift through. Tokyo is at its six and it only gives you 12 in either direction. so instead of it being evenly distributed through the east and odd from the west. Its a perfect 6. Which works considering you have to mode switch to adjust world time. It still seems a bit clunky. But, your not going to get much smoother without losing the triple sensor. There is a middle ground at grb200. But, still with that watch there are no timezones on the watch face and some timezones are still missing. (a few). These watches have to be manually declinated. The Rangeman was the only watch that adjusted that automatically through GPS. But those really only come into play if you travel latitudinally in increments of over 50 or so miles. Unless you live in Africa or somewhere around the islands of Singapore. That would be longitudinal incremental measurements of magnetic/true north.

Excellent video. One thing, though. An increase in air pressure will show as a decrease in altitude. So if you see an increase in altitude first thing in the morning, that means a fall in air pressure. Meaning a low pressure moving in, with corresponding bad weather. Nevertheless, an EXCELLENT idea for weather check first thing in the morning.

I watched all of your wonderful videos for 16 minutes and 35 seconds. I totally agree with your comment, which is fun and accurate. I also enjoy using the G-Shock, but recently I am using the mtg-b2000. As I get older, I prefer to use analog and metallic watches. The G-Shock urethane cord broke and I had to grind it several times, my skin became itchy, and I didn't like the plastic body peeling off and grinding after long use, so I replaced it with a metal one. Also, the altitude and temperature were not accurate, so it was inconvenient to actually use it... However, I was too careful to use a smartwatch, so it didn't suit me... Thank you. I'll take a look at your other videos too. See you again.

*The green alphanumeric characters on the negative LCD panel is marvelous, jack! I’d go so far even to say that it’s better than the vaunted MIP display, given its limitations in practical ’usage’.*
*I have a Pro Trek PRW-50T and a Pro Trek PRW-3510 with this feature. Oh boy do I love ‘em! The mint green alphanumeric characters are very easy on the eyes. Plus, I don’t know why, but when looking at photos of the LCD display, in some pictures it renders the alphanumeric characters as tri-color (green, blue, and yellow). Upon closer examination, I discovered that that occurs when the flash was on the camera when the picture was taken. In real life the mint green LCD panel doesn’t have that tri-color effect.*

I was interested in the GA-2100, but what puts me off the most, is that tiny LCD display, and if wanting to use it often, this might be a strain on the eyeballs... also it's very light, so might not feel more like a Swatch Watch... this is just my thoughts... and to add, my GWG2k is getting the most wrist time... may not be the best of modules, but it does a nice spread of functions needed everyday, and yes, you can wear it 24/7 without any issues :))

Maybe later... but for me, it seems that the LED light is what makes it the most different, as for the battery life, in my opinion, my Fenix 6Pro is perfectly fine, and there are battery packs if you're wanting to go further afield :))
I still see the Fenix 5X Plus a great flagship Garmin, so is this like the iPhone Samsung smartphones, where a little gimmick pushes you to get the latest... end of practice, these Fenix 6's and 7's do more than needed, if you want more, then you're walking on a fine red carpet like a Prince... sometimes you need to keep your own tactile features, meaning, don't always rely only upon electrical goods, much like how modern cars are stripping away our skills to drive... hope all that makes sense :-P
I'm not sure about the solar side with regards to the Fenix, seems the Instinct has this working better... so is it again, making these with all the additions more attractive??? and for me, a torch on a watch isn't the reason why I'd upgrade, so for now, my Fenix 6 Pro is more than plenty :)
Cheers for your feedback my friend, always good to read :))
